welike2cruise Posted May 20, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2009 Our cruise will be stopping in Costa Rica on the June 6th sailing of the Carnival Freedom and we are looking for something fun for the entire family. There are two families with 3 children under 8. Long excursions not an option. Any close, safe, clean beaches worth going to?? A tour of a rain forest that doesn't take all day would be great. They are just doing the things we wanted to do. Kinda piecing together a tour between two of there other tours to see nothing but animals because that is what my kids are into. Playa Bonita Beach: It has very nice white sand and very casual but decent and inexpensive restaurant. The beach is safe but does have good strength breakers unlike most Carribean beaches. We were there recently with 2 other families and we had 5 kids under 9 with us. Everyone had a ball at the beach. For a gentle rainforest tour, take the Tortugera Canal Tour - offered by RCCL and local tour operators (and I am guessing by Carnival too). They take you on a little beat up motor boat on the very wide spread irrigation canal which feeds water to many parts of the rainforest. For 30-45 minutes they will show you some monkeys, iguanas, birds and maybe alligator or two. In addition they will take you to Banana plantation and processing, coffee plantation and processing, feed you fresh tropical fruit from a street side vendor, take you to a high point with a view of the pier and finally to Playa Bonita Beach where they will feed you lunch also (chicken with coconut rice and beans - mouth-watering!). With kids I think you will enjoy this more than either the educational Veragua rainforest tour or the zipline or the trams. Research the local tour operators on the ports board and book before you go.
