Gambling in Bermuda?

We would like to take the Boston to Bermuda cruise on NCL Spirit in 2010. DH will miss having the casino open too. I do wish NCL would add a couple other ports besides Bermuda. Martha's Vineyard, Portland, or Newport would nice ports of call for the Boston to Bermuda cruises.

Unless they were to establish longer cruises, adding additional ports would seriously reduce the amount of time spent in Bermuda, which most people feel is already too short to really enjoy all that the island has to offer.

negc, I agree completely.

Leefpeeper,

While there are those that prefer to have a number of ports, one of the main attractions to many IS the fact that the cruise does not go anywhere but Bermuda. If you read anything on the Bermuda Ports of Call Board, you will see all those who are trying to fit in everything they would like to do.:)

Bermuda is not almost crime free as crime is on the rise:.........

You're correct, Bermuda is not almost crime free but it is still safer than some of the other places the cruise ships visit.:)

.......My last visit to Bermuda I felt safe but I was also back onboard the ship by 6pm.

I love Bermuda and the people but I will not be walking around after 10pm with my 13 year old or even with husband.

As long as one stays relatively near where the ship docks there should not be problems any worse than someplace in the US. Just stay in well lit public areas and practice common sense precautions that you would use anywhere.

Most summer cruises on large ships have 800+ kids (I was on the Dawn)I can't see parents looking for clubs/bars off the ship while the kids are onboard.

The ones looking for nightlife may not have children.;)

In St. George the place to "party" is the White Horse Tavern which is almost close enough to the ship to hit with a good spit ball.:D The Frog and Onion at Dockyard needs a more powerful one and Hammerheads is not within range but it's not in an unsafe area.

LOL I have children and still look around from time to time for nightlife:)

That's why cruising works so well for us. Having the casino open from 10pm-6am would be a source of entertainment in our case.

We never made it over to the White horse pub last year for lunch, I heard the fish and chips are great!

I agree all travelers should use common sense when on vacation in Bermuda or any other destination.

Here's the way I see it. It's a separation of ship and state. As most Bermudians lock up for the night, the passengers return to the ship. At a given hour, the casino opens for play. The locals can't get on the ship to gamble, and the passengers can't gamble on the island. The casual player is likely to spend the same amount on the island, casino or not. The fanatical player is probably on another itinerary altogether as 7 or 8 hours is not enough. To determine if it works or not, how about a trial run...say, 3 or 6 months. That should give everyone the answer to this crazy dilemma.

And I can see locals being pissed about a casino being so close but yet so far, and create resentment between visitors and locals. Plus, the argument is out there that this is just a doorway to land-based casino. Aside from the moral objections held by some, casinos generally bring other problems with them ... like establishing bureacracy and keeping things running "clean" so to speak.

The bigger issue, however, is how does Bermuda accomodate the wishes of their visitors without alienating it's tax-paying citizens. Politically, this is a fight I'm rather glad I'm just a spectator for.

The beauty of the Boston to Bermuda run is that it does stay in Bermuda more than one day or more than an overnight..that is the big draw for us.. I do not enjoy if today is Monday we are in Newport, tomorrow Nantucket, and the next day Bermuda.. As for gambling I could care less.. the games are stacked against you..that's how the ship makes $$ Now if you want a different itinerary go in mid-September when the ship goes to Canada and perhaps Portland Why would I want to cruise to Newport when it's only an hour or so from our home..In case you haven't noticed many of the European cruises are overnighting in many ports like Lisbon, Venice, etc.. As for safety in Bermuda.. sadly it isn't as safe as it used to be.. don't leave things on the beach while your in the water.. the locals are watching and walking the streets of St. George at night isn't recommended either..sad isn't it.. but I feel a heck of a lot safer in Bermuda than I do in St. Thomas where the store keepers lock up at 5:00 p.m. because of the crime.
