Why does Carnival charge a gratuity for mini-bar items?

Actually we really don't know exactly where that extra dollar a day goes........it doesn't specifically say buffet..... actually it doesn't say buffet at all........so I'm good with that......

What is the tipping policy onboard?spacer.gifService Gratuities

For your convenience, we automatically charge the gratuities for dining and stateroom staff to your onboard Sail & Sign account. The total amount is $10.00 per guest, per day (our recommended guideline) as follows:

$ 3.50 Per Day Stateroom Services

$ 5.50 Per Day Dining Room Services

$ 1.00 Per Day Alternative Services: distributed to other kitchen and hotel service staff

For Cruises-To-Nowhere, gratuities of $10 per guest, per day must be prepaid.

They changed the wording to keep cheap people from balking at the $1/day for the alternative dining. Too many were claiming they ate at one or the other and weren't going to tip for both.

Carnival is really long overdue on raising the minimum tipping guidelines.

Why not have separate inventory items.....hotels do.......

I would never tip at a buffet unless the hostess brought my drink.........

I still leave a small tip as someone has to bus the table, but thats just me :D

I must go into a self-induced coma so that I might contemplate how it is that $1.00 pppd going to who knows who, for who knows why, is perfectly OK. But 25 or 30 cents going to your room steward for restocking your mini bar, is piracy on the high seas to some people!

K, I know you just don't agree with it.

But for some,

$1.00 per person per day,OK,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,While,

15% restocking is a criminal act!

Weird!

But then the $1.00 IS removable!!!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO!!! I never said it was about the MONEY you did:p:D

It is ok to disagree I could care less what others do......one of my good friends puts money in the tip jar at Starbucks (not her left over change either).........I tell her that is lame:p:D

I'm not cheap.......and I still think it is lame:D

And typically the people that scream about the "money" all the time are the truely "cheap" ones. :D

No, just the one's that start a sentence with "I am not cheap"

True enough. And typically the people that scream about the "money" all the time are the truely "cheap" ones. :D

More rubbish or perhaps a typo. It is the people who hide behind "principle" or some other nonsense who are the truly "cheap" ones.

It's always about the money, whether religion, politics, cruising, whatever.

That was in denfense of being called cheap...........never did I say it was about the money;) nor did the op;)

The thread isn't about spending the money......it is about being charged a tip for no service..........or basically a standard service...........

I thought it was about the dishonesty of posting a false price to induce purchases.

Maybe it's a little about both.

I'd really like to know whether the "restocking fee" is a tip that goes to the steward or whether it is revenue that goes to Carnival's bottom line. You'd think they'd call it "gratuity" if it was a tip. But maybe they know that if they did that, passengers would rightfully question why they're paying a tip for self-service -- so they use a vague expression like "restocking fee".

I guess one way or another they're either being dishonest about the price or dishonest about where the 15% fee is going.

LMAO. It must really be wonderful to go through life with such a jaded view of the world.

You seem to be a person who is very concerned with "cheapness". Why are you so uptight about money? :p

It is listed on the mini bar menu as a restocking fee......but the op said it showed up as a gratuity on her account........so who knows.........

Well, that's not true. You just came out and said that in your post, unprovoked.

Maybe it was something you said behind the den fense.

Here's a suggestion. In the land Down Under service staff are paid government defined "good wages". Tipping is not required or necessary. The "price" is all included in the cost of doing business. The whole concept of offering "cash" directly for good service IMO is about showing off. It's really about the company or management off loading their quality assurance of their service staff to the customer thru direct payment.

To answer the cheapness question it cost me over $6500 to embark at the cruise terminal and I wish my S&S was only $1200. I am willing to pay for the experience of cruising. Rule of Thumb...

1. if you use it your going to pay for it ... directly, indirectly, built in or hidden.

2. if the cost is a concern find out how much it's going to cost before... not after.

have a good cruise

I am not at all uptight about money. You are clearly the one with a perception problem.

Really? Seems every other post you use the word "cheap". It doesn't take any imagination to see you're very concerned about it. Why else would you post about it so much? LMAO

I'm not at all concerned, but thanks for playing.

LOL.

On a related note, one of the wealthiest persons I've ever known was also one of the cheapest I've ever known. And he was ALWAYS the first to bring out the accusations of others being cheap.

While I have no clue as to whether nola is/isn't wealthy, I wouldn't at all be suprised to find out that he actually is, cheap.:D

Not that it really matters but this was the post I was referring to which was posted right above mine:

It is always about the money and never anything else. Cheap people happen.

But hey the dense fog comment was great:rolleyes:

All these derogatory comments because some people have a different opinion......nice:rolleyes:

cruise.................2000.

parking.................140.

bar bill..................600 includes the 15%.

tips......................250 auto and xtra bar tips.

casino................1000.

gas.......................50.

board cat.............140.

precruise..............300 hotel, dinner.

total.................4480.

2 $7.00 drinks each in room= $28.00 per day X 7 days = $196 + $4480 = $4676.

15% of $196 = $29.40/ $4676.00= 00.00629 of the total.

4 drinks per day would be an above average use of the mini bar, yet the total is 6 tenths of a percentage point of your total cruise.

4 Cokes a day would be about $8.00 total for the 15% for the cruise, or less than 2 tenths of a single percent of the total.
