Travelling with Teens

Recommended Posts

I will be travelling with 4 adults, 2- 19yr olds, and a 17 yr old. The 17 yr old is the only one not old enough to be in the dance club in the evenings. What is your experience with the possibility he would get to come in with us? Have you found Carnival strict on this policy (he will be 2 months off his 18th bday when we travel!)

May vary ship to ship, but was told on Pride last week the two 17 y.o.s I was traveling with could not go into dance club the evening we asked. (One of them will be 18 in 6 wks.)

As said above, it may vary on each ship but they were strict on the Conquest, which is one of the reasons we booked a late summer cruise, our youngest turns 18 three days before we leave and she wanted to be able to get in with her 21 yr. old sister

I do apologise for posting in the wrong thread. I wanted to start my own but I have only just joined and I don't know what to click on to start a new thread.

I chose this thread because it deals with travelling with children and we are considering also a Carnival cruise. My question relates to a much younger child. Can anyone help me as to how to post a new thread asking specifically about travelling with infants?

I would go to the the special cruises area and go to the family cruising link. This is a great place to have those types of questions answered. Lots of parents with expertise are waiting to talk to you! Good luck! :)

I just got off the Triumph two days ago and I'm 19. I look like I'm 15 years old and they checked my ID very closely each and every night. I went over to the bar to get water because I was dancing a lot and I could feel security on my back! Almost every night there were parents and teens outside the club "discussing" the issue of getting into the club. I cruised when I was 17 and I loved Club O2! My advice would be to go on the first night. It's a lot easier meeting people at Club O2 because everyone your age is in one spot at one time so you can meet lots of people at once. Once you have your "group" you can go do other things. If he doesn't like dancing or the other activities, he can always go off with friends and go in the hot tub or play basketball. He could try to get in, but I wouldn't count on it!

Hope this helps!!!

We had a similar issue when our group cruised last July. There were six "kids" with us. Our youngest son was the only one under 18. He was 17 and two months shy of 18. Not only was he not allowed in the clubs at night, he was kicked out of the casino every time the group went in. (I know...he was under the legal age. He should not have gone in the casino. I am just stressing the point that he was left out of a lot of activities.) Our oldest son, who was 20, spent a lot of quality time with his brother :D as did another kid in the group. They both say this was their least favorite cruise. If I could turn back the clock, I think I would have tried to talk our friends into waiting to cruise until he was 18.

We had nearly the same situation on the Triumph and yes, they were strict about it. Sorry, hope your experience is different.

All the times when the night disco is open there have been a 'bouncer' at the door who checks I.D.s to make sure you're 18. I would not expect the 17 year old to get in.

This was what I saw on the Elation last month. There were some late teens that were standing outside the door discussing swapping id's while staff was right there:rolleyes:

So just for clarification, the only thing the 18, 19 and 20 year olds CAN'T do is drink? They can BE everywhere on the ship (bars, discos, clubs, casino), but just can't purchase alcohol? Can they gamble in the casino? (We've got an 18, 19 and 21 year old in our group and I'm just trying to figure out what's a "go" and what's a "no go." Thanks!

Yes! They are allowed to do everything except buy alcohol. My friend, who was 20, tried to by a drink with a 21 year old and it didn't work. The computer has your age on the seapass card so it's not even worth trying to get around it. Also, security is in the club so be careful and aware if any of the 21+ people are buying drinks for the younger ones. There were a couple girls who had a drink in their hand and they forgot ID to go into the club. They were arguing that since they had a drink, they shouldn't need to show ID... they ended up having to go back to their room to get it! Make sure they have ID on them at night!!!!

Thanks everyone again for all of the good information! I've broke the news to my son, and to my surprise, didn't bother him at all...he is looking forward to Club O2! And like I told him, there are always deck parties where we can all hang out.....I can't wait...36 more days to go!!:D

Oh man, this is gonna stink. We'll have a group of about 11 kids with us...2 of them are within a month of being 18, but the rest are already there.

Lord, I hope the Fantasy is a little more lenient, or it ain't gonna be pretty.

Look on the bright side: At least TWO of them are under 18....they'll have each other!! Plus they'll have all of the other 16/17 year olds they will meet. When we sailed 2 years ago (with the same 3 "kids" we are sailing with this summer), my two were 16 and 17; their cousin was 19. They all managed to have a really (and I mean really good time). They spent some time together, and some time apart. I'm definitely happy that they'll all be 18 or over this summer, but 2 years ago it definitely wasn't too big of a problem. Especially if you're sailing during the summer, there will be plenty of people their own age to hang out with. Have fun!

Sometimes, you can find people who are 18+ who don't like going into the club and hang out around the basketball court, hot tub or food area. My brother is 17 and I'm 19 and it is a little scary to go off on my own especially since I'm a young, petite girl haha. I just go up to some girls in the club who look around my age and look friendly and start talking to them. It works every time! That's the best advice I could give you! Also, try to make friends as soon as possible. People get into little groups and have a routine by night 2. Everyone will have a good time!

Having just been on the Fantasy earlier this year - your teens 17-18 if they are boys will be very disappointed by the lack of the basketball court. It was taken out by the Evolutions of Fun. My 12 year old could have cared less about the waterslides - he wanted the basketball courts!!!!

My nephew was 17 on our cruise last November. I echo the comments of others who have praised the Club 02 experience. My nephew met lots of new friends on board via the teen club and had a great time. I, for one, am proud of the cruise lines for taking a strict stance on this matter. Our kids get too much exposure to the influences of alcohol as it is--let them stay kids as long as they can! The seemingly rising rate of overboard incidents involving alcohol abuse should be enough to make us want to shelter teens from alcohol exposure and not promote it.

They really need to cater to the 18-21 year old crowd. They don't need to make a separate area, like Club O2, but maybe some special activities (that are supervised) specifically for that age group. I went to a meet and greet for ages 18-25 and it was in a lounge where other things we're going on. I was very disappointed!

I agree, more planned activities for this age group would be a good thing.

Our 19 yr olds had a blast. They were with us at the deck parties, shows, and other things. You do not need to go to a night club to dance. They have dancing music everywhere on the ship.

Our 16 yr olds had a blast at the Club O2.
