Food for thought....Let us cruise America

Recommended Posts

Why, when we live in a country that has eveything, we choose to cruise to third world countries?

A wonderful oppurtunity presents itself here to the cruise lines. Going from Seattle to as far as possible on the east coast, would afford many to see many parts of America, rich in culture, that folks would never have considered before.

I know of this first hand, having being born in England; we now paying an arm an a leg to see places we took for granted whilst living there.

I wonder if one day, we will ever see cruises within this country, wouldn't that be something?

Sign me up....I think they would fill the ship with no problem. But the ship still has to visit a foreign port, the Jones Act.

There are American cruises - on the Mississippi river, the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska at least.
They are expensive compared to Caribbean cruises - If you want to cruise in the good old USA then that is what you need to do. If you enlarge your scope to include Canada, then you have some wonderful Great Lakes and North East options. The choice is yours. It always has been.

The Jones Act basically requires any vessel engaging in Coastwise Trade (from one port to another in the US) be US built, US flagged, US crew. This means a lot of costs that are passed on to the traveler or shipper. It was enacted to help US shipyards, but in reality has shut them down.

if you want an all inclusive cruise that only visits US ports and doesn't have to call at a foreign port... starting July 4th you can sail NCL's Pride of Aloha. it will be joined sometime next year by NCL's Pride of America as soon as the damage that she sustained during the building process is fixed. Anyhow, she will sail 7 night cruises around the Hawaiian islands. She is currently the only cruise ship that is part of a major cruise line (NCL, CCL, RCI, HAL, Princes, etc.) that sails US only ports.

I think I would prefer cruising to foreign ports. I enjoy different cultures and have been to LA and San Francisco and most Atlantic port neighborhoods. I'm afraid it might bore me. Also not interested in the New England/Canada cruises and Alaska does'nt have enough beaches and palm trees.

How ironic that the only ships that can sail in U.S waters belong to NCL whose parent company is in Indonesia......

Yes, it would be wonderful to "cruise America". But is outrageously expensive. A 4 days cruise aboard a steamboat on the Mississippi out of New Orleans costs more than a 7 days cruise to the Caribbean on a cabin with a balcony! I just watched a great show on the Travel Channel about the American Orient Express; I liked it so much I got on the net and order the catalog. They have this great 7 days tour in the west/midwest to four different national parks, the cabin for two with half facility (no shower, you have to use a community shower at "your" assigned time) costs over $5000!!!!!. If you wishs to have your own shower you must pay almost $7000 USD! Air fare not included to departing/arrival cities. This is the reason why we all keep cruising the Caribbean, imagine all that money and no pool, no evening shows, no ocean to enjoy, no beautiful beaches to relax. Cruising is the best vacation value!!!!!!!
