Should I be responsible or cruise?

Please help me understand how we are paying for this. Thanks

 

here's a summary written in... english, that most people can understand... (seriously, not being critical, you can just read it, and glean information... you'll see how this is relevant):

that's what i meant, re: 'written in... english', and 'you can just read it'...

 

(the official site...) it's all pie charts with vague terms... and just try to search for the word 'unemployment'. you'll see announcements, state by state, where federal funds are injected unto the tapped out state systems... but it doesn't seem they care to 'sum it all up' :confused:

 

in many cases, regarding a discussion about unemployment (50% of states)... that's in part how tax $ are involved...

 

i don't know where op lives... and i thereby can't comment as to whether or not this is relevant... (or exact length, all that - there's not enough info) but it seems like lots of people aren't even cognizant of this aspect of the issue...

Send out a few resumes before you leave and go...

 

btw, and i'm just commenting because this hasn't been mentioned...

but i wouldn't recommend sending out resumes before the cruise...

if op decides to cruise and can justify it - so be it - i'm not even specifically commenting on that.

but, as an employer and a 'decision maker' in hiring...

1) the job market is tight right now. if you want a job, you’ve got to be on your toes.

2) if i find an attractive candidate, i have them contacted immediately

3) if they don’t respond within 24 hrs, i am aware of that… (now, remember, they actively applied for my open position)

4) i will have probably in that 24 hrs, found 10 other equally qualified and attractive candidates

5) i will have also found 20 others who are entirely over-qualified, but still want the job – because they don’t have one (but that most often doesn’t work, for many reasons) - and discounted another 30...

6) i will have eliminated 20 people way more qualified

7) i will have interviewed with 3 of the 10 others, the first day, and the remaining by day 3

8) it will be clear to me at that point, that that these 10 people really want the job

9) i will have about 100 other resumes by day 4…

10) and some of them are equally qualified, over-qualified, or otherwise available

11) i would likely schedule at least another 10 interviews by day 4

12) i would have likely hired somebody by business day 6

13) for long-term, substantive positions, at least 2 weeks, often up to 4 wks of ‘transition time’ is expected from such employees

14) it’s ideal for an employer to hire within that period, so as to have the new hire trained by the other associate on day-to-day sorta things

15) if i received a resume, and heard from the applicant 11 days later (1 day pre + 9 day b2b + 1 day post), they would have likely ‘missed the boat’ (pun intended)

16) ‘i was on a cruise’ would not be an acceptable response :rolleyes:

16a) applicant would have to be uniquely qualified to recover from that one… especially granted the others i would have already interviewed (or hired)… or they would have all had to suck :)

17) i love cruising – but that would indicate to me that the applicant has other priorities, before we ever even met

18) it would be clear that employment with my company was not their highest priority (and mind you, this could be easily remedied by responding in a timely manner – thereby, don’t submit resume before ‘vacation’) at the time in point

19) i would not recommend anybody try to apply for a job from a cruise ship. if you’re on vacation… vacation… not to mention the cell / internet costs – and lack of actual availability regardless…

20) just not a good idea, from my perspective…

Unemployment generally is based of your last 18 months of wages. I've collected UC and ended up making more than when I was employed. Why? Because my job turned part-time when the county didn't have enough money to pay everyone full time wages. I volunteered to move from my FT position to pt. After 6 months, they couldn't even swing the pt positions so we were laid off. My UC benefits were based off my last 18 months of work....only 6 months being pt. So, I made about $10 more per week on UC than working.

 

I don't think using UC is "living off the government." The OP worked and was laid off from her job. Most likely for reasons she can't control. You earn the "credits" and they are paid for by your employer. It's not like she's saving up her welfare benefits and selling her foodstamps to go on a cruise.

 

Please refer to post #83. I just said it doesn't sound right to me, whether it's right or wrong (we're each entitled to our own opinion, right?). Never said the OP is living off the government...

She's been contributing to unemployment for 20+ years....and was laid off 3 weeks ago. Relax...Take a deep breath or the fire extinguishers will definitely be required.

 

Exactly......20 years herself paying into unemployment.........

I can see both sides of this one. A few years ago, I had to take a 6 week medical leave after cancer surgery (successful). I had planned a ski trip for the last week prior to the medical problems, but decided that I would not be physically able to take that trip. The friends and others that were going to take the ski trip all decided on a cruise instead.

 

Was I being unresponsible for taking a "vacation" while on medical leave? My doctor said it was one of the best things I could have done - gotten away from my problems, relaxing, not overdoing things, etc. Was I cheating my employer by vacationing while on medical leave? My boss said I looked more relaxed and ready to work than he had seen me in months. The cruise was actually cheaper than the ski trip would have been, so financially it worked out better for me.

 

The OP has "earned" the unemployment checks - how he spends them is his business...assuming he is financially stable. From several of his responses, he seems to be.

 

As long as the states rules for collecting unemployment are followed, what business is it of ours if he takes a single or B2B trip of any length. Yes, being gone for too long will hurt his chances of getting a job. That is for the OP to decide. He knows his career field, the people in it, his job prospects, etc.

 

I'd send out the resumes the day I left town, with a note that I was going to be out of town untill a specific date. Don't mention why. As a poster above said, that may hurt his chances, but it does show responsibility and tell a prospective employer why the phone calls are not being answered. Better yet, have a trusted friend mail them out about 3 days before you get home.

 

Life is short. How many people do you know that have died suddenly from what ever cause?

 

OP - I hope you enjoy your cruise - without guilt.

I do not see why all the ruckus about being on unemployment. You do have to meet certain requirements to receive it. I would have a problem if someone was on welfare and used that money to cruise.

I have always wanted to do some sort of back to back cruise. I found what I think is the perfect one for us out of NO in September. We have friends doing another cruise on another line I don't really care for and their drink prices are much higher but they want us to join them. That cruise is from a port a half hour away. The B2B out of New Orleans would be $200 LESS with airfare for 9 days not 7 days and cheaper drinks. Now to me which to choose is a no brainer.... but now HERE is the catch! I am currently unemployed except for the hours I am allowed to work with my unemployment. At the moment I am actually making a tiny bit more then when I was employed. So.... now that I have the time to go should I since once I get a new job I probably won't have vacation for a year or... not go because I am unemployed?

 

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO ManyMore: First, if you wish to go on a cruise do what you think is right. No one knows about your situation more than you do.

Second, you may do something on the ship that could net you some money. Maybe even a lot of it. There are some folks I know that won a lot of money in the casino. You never know. That money, if it was enough, might tide you over a rough spot. When you get a new job you probably won't have a vacation for a year. So take your vacation now isn't necessarily a bad idea.
