NEW YORK LADY2 Posted August 14, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2009 We are thinking of taking the train to Herculaneum and have heard it is a down hill walk from the train to the gates of the site. That should be easy enough to do - but how hard (or steep) is the walk back UP the hill. Thanks for any info you can give us. Jackie
Rare carlmm Posted August 14, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2009 "How hard" is of course subjective but if you fear it might be a problem I would have two recommendations: - Leave plenty of time for the way back to have the chance to taka a rest. There are a few bars and shops on the way. I eg. bought just some water and a bread with prosciutto in a small shop and just sat down on some stairs or something. OR - Ask about the bus schedule and find out which bus to take in the direction of the station. Maybe somebody in the station or at the ticket office at the excavation side can help you. But personally I think it is not bad.
NEW YORK LADY2 Posted August 14, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Thanks so much for the info. As long as there are cafe's and shops to stop in it should be doable. Hubby has breathing problems but he did make it up to the Acropolis the last time we were in Athens a couple of yrs ago just took it slow and at his own pace and that was in the heat of June. This time we will be in Italy and also Greece in November so the cooler weather should make it easier still. Jackie
cougfan Posted August 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2009 Jackie, if your husband made it up to the Acropolis then he should have no problem with the walk from Herculaneum. The walk from Herculaneum is not as steep as to the Acropolis but it is longer. Just take it slow and steady. Also to get into Herculaneum you have to go down because it is below the city streets. Andym Posted August 16, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 16, 2009 Jackie, Take the bus to Herculaneum. The stop is on the island in the middle of the road where the ship docks, ask at the news stand over the road. He will sell you tickets and tell you which bus to take. The bus ride is about 40 minutes and it stops right outside the gates at Herculaneum. (ask the driver to tell you when you get to Ercolano Scavi) The return stop is over the road from where you get off and once again stops by the dock where you originally got on, cost was about 4 euros return, easy.
