Papeete...How many days

Planning time in Moorea and Tahiti (Papeete). Should I plan more than two days in Papeete?

IMHO I would minimize time on Tahiti and maximize time on Moorea. Two days should be fine on Tahiti.

We are planning 4 days in moorea and 2 nights in papeete - one is for the night before the flight. We are renting a car in Papeete for the day so we can entertain ourselves. Moorea has more happening.

Papeete

The town itself - 2 hours.

Exploring the island - a single day should be fine.

But if you are staying at a nice resort you may enjoy the extra day.
