Last year on 9th July I booked a 7 night sailing on Meraviglia for Sept 24th 2017 in a YC1.

I must admit I did get my 20% Black card discount. The total cost , cruise only, was £2686.40 in a specified cabin (well it was as soon as the deck plans were released:- cabin mumber 18009).

if I only had a 5% discount, to do a direct comparison with todays 5%, the price would have been £3190.10

I did a dummy booking about 30 minutes ago ,and got my paltry 5% discount and the price today £6648.10.

That's a 247% increase in price

(or 208% if both discounts were 5%)

What are MSC Doing???????

What did you expect. MSC was a a new player. Now that they have gained market share they can increase prices to compare to the other lines. After all it costs them all the same thing to provide the product. Enjoy the relatively low prices you locked in a year ago. Prices will likely continue to rise.

MSC is not a new player in the European market and this cruise is on a ship based in Europe aimed at European guests, who know the product well and this is not an example of the product they sell here.

Presumably just a case of low stateroom availability and high demand?

Or could this be a pricing algorithm gone wrong? It happens on sites like Amazon all the time with third party sellers. I can't imagine someone is sitting at MSC and coming up with prices for each stateroom on each cruise; there must be a large element of automation involved.

Perhaps if there has been a sudden spike in YC1 bookings for this sailing, the algorithm just went a bit haywire?

Totally guesswork on my part...

I guess booking Seaside 2 on opening day might make sense if they allow us to book when/if she comes to the US. I'm 95% sure I'll be booking Seaside 1 for summer 2018, once released.

Meraviglia prices have gone up...and I'm talking regular prices not YC...but I'm looking at a 2019 European voyage so doesn't affect me right now.

It's the same old story. The earlier you book (like one year before) chances are you'll be getting a better price than if you wait until a few months before the departure date. All of us shed a few tears thinking of how it was when we got the 20% cruise discounts - and not only the cruise discounts but 20% minibar, 30% laundry and internet, casino chips, a bottle of Moet-Chandon champagne, dinner at the captain's table, etc. etc. I can even remember when we got discounts on excursions. Ah the good old days!

It's everywhere! I booked a solo cabin on NCL getaway transatlantic for EUR 1699 in January (17 days trip on april 2017).

When I checked now, they are selling it for EUR 2157.
