euro cruiser Posted September 8, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2016 I would take the fast ferry from Molo Beverello, the pier adjacent to the cruise port, to Sorrento in the morning. The first one departs at 9 AM and gets you there in about 40 minutes. Ferry info here: http://alilauro.it/orari-e-tariffe From Sorrento to Herculeneum (Ercolano Scavi on the train schedule) the Circumvesuviana train or the Campania Express train are your only options. There are two trains each hour for the regular train (schedule here: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/default/files/eavferro/Sorrento%20-%20Napoli.pdf). There is one run of the Campania Express that may work for you, at 2:08 PM: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/it/content/campania-express-2016 This train is more expensive but it's far more comfortable, with enough seating and working AC. It's a short ride on the Circumvesuviana back to Naples. You can either get off at the penultimate stop, Garibaldi, and take the metro (line 1: http://www.anm.it/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=98) from there to Piazza Municipio (across the street from the cruise port) or go to the last stop, Porta Nolana, and take the 151 bus back to the port: http://www.anm.it/images/stories/PDF/linee_urbane_16febbraio_2016/linea%20151.pdf
