gam888 Posted September 14, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2016 We are sailing on the Costa in October, it is docking in Savona from 8-5. Originally we were thinking of going to Portofino, but figure it will take too long to go back and forth from Savona. We have been to Genoa last year, and visited by foot most of the sites in the Old Town and the waterfront. I looked at some info on Savona on Youtube, and it seems like it is an industrial port, with not a lot to see in the city centre. Could you please tell me can you take a bus or train from Savona to Genoa, how far is the station from the cruise dock? So at least we can see something more interesting although it is a bit of a repeat, than just hanging around in Savona itself. Are there any taxi where you get off the ship that would offer to take you on various trips within an hour drive from Savona? Are there any other towns worthwhile visiting other than Genoa? Any suggestions are welcome!
CASPALL Posted September 14, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2016 (edited) There will be a lot of taxis available to take you to the station. It will cost you approx 20 euros. It will be a 30 minute walk I think. Our friends walked it and wished they had taken a taxi. Check trenitalia.com If you think Portofino is too far then you could opt for Nervi which is just a few kilometres outside Genoa. You get off the train and then walk to the little picturesque harbour. We werent keen on Portofino as it was so touristy and expensive. It wasnt like an Italian town at all. We spent most of our day in Santa Margherita - a stunning town.( You get the bus outside the train station for Portofino). We had a wonderful lunch there on the promenade and its not so touristy. Hi Caspall, I looked at some videos on Youtube and Santa Margherita looks very charming. Do you know if we get off the Costa ship in Savona, can we walk to the train station to get a train there. How long would the train ride be and what would be the cost, thank you in advance.
CASPALL Posted September 28, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 28, 2016 It's a 30 minute walk to the station - just under 2 km. A taxi is 20 euros at the port but if you walk into town you could get a cheaper taxi from there maybe Im not sure how long it would take - an hour and a quarter?. Google maps will tell you Train won't be any more than 14 euros each - could be cheaper depending on what train you take When you get to Santa M, just ask someone in the station bar where to get the bus into town. They're very friendly and helpful. Have a coffee or a wine in there - it's really cheap!
