"Careenage" inlet at Bridgetown, Barbados
Posted February 9, 2021
Named the Careenage
because this was where a bunch of hull maintenance used to go down,
back in the day!
And here's what it looked like.
Only the rich ship-owners
could afford proper dry dock.
The rest of us had to strip her down
and heel her over
so we could process one side of the hull
- then turn her around
and do the other half.
Simple, but effective.
Well-heeled ship owners
could afford Blackwood's Dock
on the Southern side of the inlet.
