  1. If you have a hair straightener you can double it up as an iron also. But like I said hand held steamers seem to be ok. I think the steamer people are referring to are the medical steamers for congestion and the like.

Quick update on this thread - we have just returned from cruising on Radiance of the Seas ( RCL ). We took a small hand held clothes steamer on board with our packed luggage and had no issues. It also worked like a charm for hubbies shirts ( practically only thing we used it for - most of my clothes are either crushed style or polyester blend so creases dropped out hanging in wardrobe ). ROS doesn't have self laundry facilities, so we really liked being able to take this onboard. However, am guessing it may be like going through any security check - it often depends on the place or person doing the checking, so am not saying it would be the same for all cruise lines :) Happy cruising !

  2. We are leaving LA on 28 day Princess South Seas cruise. Is US currency used on all the islands? In Papeete, Princess does not offer excursion to Botanical gardens. What is the best way to do this on our own?

We've just returned from SP islands, cruising on the Radiance. Our cruise left from Sydney and we had both US and AUS dollars with us. In Vanuatu, and the smaller islands ( Mystery, Lifou ) prices were quoted in Australian dollars, tho perhaps they have different signs for different ships depending on where they sail from ? I wouldn't bother getting local currency - you'll lose exchanging both ways, tho perhaps other US travellers might disagree depending on their experience. Prices were very cheap - $10 for sarongs, $5 for stubby holders, $3 for hair clips etc. Sorry can't help with Botanical Gardens question :( Enjoy your cruise !

  3. Errr ......... actually, Angela, I'm not so sure you've quite got the picture, ;)

We hadn't heard of it, thought it was some kind of treasure hunt - going round the ship & looking for clues.

    Not so.

It was an adults-only fun competition, all in the one room. Involving underwear & such.

Quite disgusting, we'd never have gone along if we'd known.

But it was an absolute riot :D

You can go along & watch, without taking part.

And if it's not your scene you can quietly slip out of the door, tut-tutting under your breath as you go.

You're right John - more too it than I thought :) Thanks for the info....looks like we've generated a bit of interest !

  4. Having just booked our first cruise - and its an RCCL one - we've just been through this minefield... We didn't understand the "guarantee" system of purchasing cabins - all our friends who'd been on cruises chose which cabin & deck they'd be on. Our TA only offered this ( for slightly more ) after we pursued it. A guarantee cabin would probably be just as good, but for our first cruise we just wanted to know where we'd be ( I have a couple of health issues ). We also checked other TA's websites and RCL's for the same cruise and found so many price variations it wasn't funny :( What really cheeses me off is that Aussies pay at least double what the US citizens pay for the same cruises....Sorry for the venting.....we really are looking foward to our cruise and have topped looking at the ads :)
