Thank you Haywood. You are right, of course, but the thought of a cruise company that provides plastic flags to wave is at best 'nursing home' material and at worse vomit-inducing yuk!
The itinerary is interesting though so who knows...

I was seriously considering a cruise on Balmoral next year but have just read about the cringe-worthy 'British Nights'. Do they still have them? P&O is bad enough with it's awful sailaway parties, but at least they are up on deck and can be avoided. If they are still held I'm afraid won't be joining them as I have no desire for such jingoistic behaviour that can only panders to the Brexit brigade.

I think you will find that you have posted in the wrong thread (and he has already said that he didn't read the Ts & Cs)!
Absolutely correct! No idea how this happened!

I googled 'Saltstraume'n hoping to see some images. Instead I came across this - https://www.barentswatch.no/en/saltstraumen/ - a live webcam. Fascinating but probably not worth the excursion cost.

Cruising mad - presumably you read the booking conditions before booking and accepted them by booking so what exactly is your gripe? I think you are just mad with yourself for being so stupid as to think the booking conditions do not apply to you perhaps because you are American. Wrong. The world does not revolve around you. Some of us have different rules. Get used to it!

I recently bought the most amazing book "Uganda: The Story of a Very Special Ship" that I discovered on Amazon. This huge book is a treasure trove of information and makes fascinating reading that will surely bring back many memories for anyone who has sailed on her. As well as photos, history and stories there is a wealth of information including a list of all the educational cruises that she made with dates and ports. I recommend everyone with the slightest interest to scour secondhand bookshops and online for a copy but be warned - it's now very rare.

So GoldConnection can cut and paste the first definition given by Google. Well at least that's the 'lazy' part taken care of.
Can we move on and return to the original point of this thread now.

Sorry, Charlie! Shorts & T shirt for dinner on a cruise ship says SLOB! We're not talking snob here, we're talking at least dressing somewhat properly as one would at a decent restaurant.
Right on Keith :)
-
Would it be out of the question to see if Etihad have a day flight?Or leave the ship the evening before -whatever you decide pace yourselves well as it is a long day.
Yes and no in that order. We have a twenty hour journey back home so night flight first suits us better and we have plans for the day before (Marina Bay Gardens and Botanical Gardens - we've done the town before!). Don't want to miss a day of our holiday either :)
-
If your airline isn't registered for the CruiseFly system (there are only 8, check the marina bay terminal website) there is a left luggage counter just to the left of the ground floor exit.
VERY IMPORTANT.
It is only open while a cruise ship is docked, so ask what time they close that day.
If they are going to be open, it leaves you free to look around Singapore.
Taxis are cheap, probably about SGD 35 to airport.
Thanks. Have looked into this but really want to spend time at airport and we will have spent the previous day doing what we want to do in Singapore itself.
-
Marina Bay Cruise Terminal has a fly - cruise facility where you can drop your luggage there and it will be transported to the airport so you can enjoy a day in Singapore for selected airlines this might be a better option for you.

Thanks but our airline, Etihad, is not served.

Flight is not until late at night so will already have over eight hours at the airport. We were advised (badly!) originally that there were amenities at the cruise terminal but I think now that they were talking about the other terminal not Marina Bay, so I think you might be right to rearrange.
-
We have four hours to wait at marina Bay terminal for our planned transfer to Changi. Is there really nothing to do there - no cafes, no shops etc as their website makes no mention of these. Wondering whether to try to rearrange our transfer.

You can only transfer photos from the SD card to the iPhone, not the other way around.
As far as a wireless external drive if you decide to go that route you might also look into the wireless Western Digital Passport Drive that has a SD card reader. Some friends of mine have been using those.
Thanks for the update. I hadn't seen the WD one with an SD card reader so I obviously need to look a bit harder. Too hot here today to concentrate and we're not used to this sort of weather in Yorkshire :)

I import them from my iPad to my computer when I get home by connecting the USB/Lighting cable. I have a Mac, so the Photos app will launch and I can import to that. Or if you don't use the Photos app there is an app on the Mac called Image Capture. Launch that and you can import into folders. If you have a Windows PC you would transfer to that with the cable but you would have to google for the details since I don't know them for Windows.
If you buy the reader do some practice dry runs at home. I think you will find it easy.

I think I've decided on getting a wireless external hard drive, perhaps the Toshiba Canvio AeroCast, but so that I'm sure I've covered all options can the Apple cable definitely be used to copy photos FROM an iPhone to an SD card?
-
I transfer my images with Apple's Lighting to SD Card Reader. They sell it for $29. The transfer is very fast. They also have a Lightning to USB camera cable but I prefer the SD Card Reader.

Thanks Charles. Reading the blurb implies that it's a one way transfer: SD card > ipad/iphone. Can you reassure me that it works the other way too? and if so is it intuitive in use?

Pending on when your cruise is, two (2) weeks is not a long time considering, and this is a case where they would answer correctly 100% of the time, no you cannot attach any external device to their computers...
As such, the premise that the poster, to whom you refer, knew the essential information and answer regardless of knowing where or what usb ports are, I believe.
bon voyage
Hi, I would seriously reconsider re-using any company that takes 14 days to answer a customer query, but once Celebrity have answered my latest query (sent to them on 3rd September) I'll try this one on them. Hopefully things are better handled in the US, but in the UK they severely cut back on their customer support, the result of which has been a much reduced standard of service. As to their knowing the answers, well, they are unable to give a definitive answer regarding a simple visa question, cannot tell me anything about changeover day on a B2B cruise that would allow me to plan anything in advance for that day and totally ignore waitlist requests.
We still love the actual Celebrity cruise experience though in spite of there poor service at times :)

Think about it for a minute. People connecting to their computers with external devices could install malware in a flash. It's good that they've thought about this possibility and disabled the USB ports on their computers.
We are talking iMacs though, so no viruses and for any malware to have any effect you need to be logged in as Admin rather than guest so I don't see that as an issue.
-
I think that is the best current strategy. Get a bunch of cards. They have become cheap. I also backup my cards to my iPad.
I too will be using several cards over the 30 days holiday but I'm really looking for a secondary backup. How do you get images to your Pad from an SD card? Any recommendations?
-
Is it possible to use the computers in the iLounge on Celebrity to connect an SD card reader and hard drive to back up camera images? If so do they charge. I read elsewhere that their computers do not have USB ports but I guess the writer was not familiar with where the ports are on iMacs.
I'd ask Celebrity this but (a) they would take 2 weeks to answer and (b) from experience their answer would most likely be wrong.

LOL!
I'm not sure I understand: Are you saying that slobs should change to make the well-dressed happier? And that would make them less selfish?
How about the alternative, with the well-appointed dressing down to make the slobs feel more comfortable? Would that make the nattily-attired less selfish?
I think what I said was quite clear. If you want to be a slob cruise elsewhere.
-
"Until then it's all about me."
Sadly, that sums up so many peoples attitudes. Perhaps it's time to be rather less selfish and to think about others a little more. That way we all get on a lot better - especially in the confines of a cruise ship.
-
Is Celebrity making a mistake in changing from the formal night to the current evening chic .
I personally approved of dressing up for the evening meal.
Everybody knew where they stood
Before I discovered the joys of cruising one of the things that put me off was the dressing up. It didn't take long for me to appreciate that the dressing for dinner was one of the highlights and with everyone looking smart dinner times were elevated to 'an event'. Sadly, being in a dinner suit next to someone in 'designer jeans' and shirt will just feel so uncomfortable I guess we're destined for the self service on 'Chic nights'!

Does anyone know, apart from Sue herself :), if Sue will be the Cruise Director on board Millennium on October/November. She was on Millie in April but it would be great if she was still to be there. Finest CD in the industry!!!
British Night on Fred
in Fred. Olsen Cruise Line
Posted · Edited by Fjord4Fun
Perhaps my thoughts on this are tarnished by P&O flag waving, bingo knees up whenever leaving a port - playing Dambusters March whilst maneuvering past an Aida ship was not their finest hour.
The Last Night at the Albert Hall is a different kettle of fish as it's on British soil. In fact, I putting together a family trip to that very event next year. However, nationalistic displays of 'the little Englander' abroad are never in good taste and very embarrassing. If you are not embarrassed by such, then you probably should be.
