  1. as my flight is not till 6 p.m. Is there anywhere in F.L. area to see manatees?

The Florida Power and Light plant located here attracts manatees in cold weather to its warm-water discharge. Florida Power provides an observation platform for viewing the mammals.

To get there from I-95 in Fort Lauderdale, take the S.R. 84 (SW 24th Street) exit and head east. Upon reaching the port itself, turn right at the water and proceed to the designated parking area.

  3. Where is the closest area for a hotel in Fort Lauderdale to the crusie ships? (Thinking about using Priceline for an April cruise)

    Thanks for the responses!

The downtown zone is the closest area, I wouldn't bid less the 4* to ensure a hotel close to the port. The beach zone would be a short ride to the port.

  4. Hi there,

We booked our pre-cruise hotel on hotwire expecting to get one of the three hotels that I found on the "cheat website." We were surprised to receive the "Riverside" hotel. It turned out to be ok because SAS said they would pick up there.

Riversides a lovely hotel with plenty of great restaurants nearby.

My only concern is about the grocery stores near by. We are looking to buy a few things pre-cruise like bottled water and alcohol.

There's a Publix Supermarket just under a mile from the Riverside Hotel on S. Andrews Ave, an easy walk or a $5 cab ride. For alcohol, stop at Total Wine on your way to the port, your driver will know where it is. ;)

Also do you know a rough estimate for a cab ride to the hotel? Thanks :)

    Approximately $15 plus gratuity.

  5. Bequia - just wondering what will FLL be like during the Super Bowl weekend.

My past experience, the towns been relatively quiet during the day as everything is happening in Miami-Dade. Late night will liven up a bit but not nearly as lively as the clubs in South Beach. You may spot a few players, and a lot of media personnel.

  6. We are leaving out of Ft L on 10/15 for a flight to Rome and back on a TransAtlantic arriving Ft. L on 11/1. Can you recommend a hotel/motel that provides:

    1. Parking for 17 days

    2. Transportation to Airport

    3. Pick up at port

Or at least #1 and #2 above

    Thank You

  7. Hi:

I'm looking for a good deal on parking for a Feb 2010 14 day cruise. What would you recommend in Port Everglade?

    Thanks,

    Izzy

I'd recommend staying at a hotel the night before that offers a park/sleep and cruise package. The Renaissance in Plantation offers up to 30 days of free parking with a nights stay.

  8. We are coming to FLL in November and my mom really wants to do some outlet shopping before we leave on our cruise. We are staying at the Renaissance and I am wondering how difficult it would be to get to the Sawgrass Mills Outlet Mall? Is it worth the trip? We are not planning on renting a car so how woudl we get there?

If your staying at the Renaissance by the port, cab fares around $50 each way. From the Renaissance in Plantation, cab fares around $20 each way. It's a lengthy trip utilizing the county bus service, by car it's less then thirty minutes away. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It's not too difficult to find substantial savings, enough to warrant leaving your clothes home and buying all new clothes for the cruise.lol. :p

  9. Best way to get from South Beach to Port Everglades?

Approximate cost of Taxi or recommendation for shuttle would be appreciated.

Thankyou Bequia. You have been missed :)

Depending on where your located in South Beach cab fare can run in the $70- $80 range. Renting a car for the 45 minute drive would be at least half that. Check with your hotel, they may have special arrangements with local car services for a better rate.

  10. Hi there-

I found good rates for the Hyatt Pier 66 ($118 for garden/double) and the Hyatt Place ($119) via hyatt.com. Are either of these good?

Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

The Hyatt Pier 66 is a resort, the Hyatt Place is an ordinary hotel. Both are fine. If you have extended time then the Pier 66 in a heartbeat. If less then 24 hours, Hyatt Place.

  11. Have enjoyed all your help before.

We are booked through Priceline for the Hyatt Place near 17th Street for March 2010 so cann't cancel. I have read on another thread there might be problems with the hotel. Have you heard of anything.

Not sure what you've heard but I wouldn't think twice about staying at this Hyatt Place.

  12. Can you recommend a nice hotel near the Sawgrass Mills Outlet Mall for under $100 a night in Dec?

The LaQuinta Inn, 13600 NW 2nd St, Sunrise, FL‎ -is 1.8 miles south of the Sawgrass Mills. Safe neighborhood, nearby restaurants within walking distance.

I have been quiet for the past couple of months. I have a blog about all things Ft Lauderdale that I made a promise to myself would be updated daily. Instead, I have been kind of busy with my other life outside of the States, and have neglected it. I'm back and making sure that any new updates get posted there timely. Questions...fire away.

  14. I

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine that the rental car companies would run regular scheduled shuttles from the cruiseport to the airport rental locations.

Guess what Lou, your wrong. It's probably been quite some time since you've been to Ft Lauderdale airport, a lot has changed.

The car rental companies fund the shared ride shuttle bus that not only services all terminals at the airport, it also runs to and from the cruiseport. When all of the car rental companies went under one roof at FLL (opposite terminal 1) , the county mandated that they eliminate the individual courtesy buses and all chip in towards the operation of the shared ride shuttle. Most of the car rental companies bought into it. A few haven't (Enterprise to name one). The shared ride shuttle has sharply decreased the amount of vehicular congestion in and around the airport. It works.

I concur with your comments about using a shuttle, a cab is certainly cheap, easy and quickest way to go. Be that as it may, the rental car shuttle is there, it's free to those with reservations.

    //////

  15. Bummer, sounds like you have a legitimate beef with Enterprise.

From the Broward County-Port Everglades web-site:

A number of car rental firms are licensed to do business at Port Everglades. The Rental Car Center at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) houses many rental car companies under one roof that share a shuttle bus to and from Port Everglades. We suggest you confirm shuttle service with the car rental service prior to reserving a vehicle.
