I sure hope this works out for the OP. Good luck. Please report back after the cruise and let us know.

I am a advanced hobbyist and confirmed DSLR user. If I am going out on a "photo shoot", I always use the SLR. That being said, cell phone cameras these days are really, really good. In the hands of a photographer, a modern cell phone camera will produce stunning results, and I use mine often. I even question the notion that the lack of optical zoom on a cell phone is a major disadvantage. In most cases (not all, I understand), I can merely move closer to the subject. I find that there are two situations where a cell phone is at a disadvantage over an SLR: in very low light where the small sensor of the cell phone is limiting, and shooting moving objects (kids, pets, sports) where the faster focusing capabilities of an SLR is a major advantage.

Thank you for taking the time to post. Sounds like you had a great time.

Here is what I have. Packs down to fit into a knapsack. Supports my DSLR with a reasonable size lens. I don't think i would try to support my 70-200 f2.8 with it though.

If you subscribe to Creative Cloud, you will always have the latest version of both LR and PS. It is $10 a month for most users. I use Lightroom most of the time for cataloging and editing. It will easily do most of the common editing tasks (e.g. cropping, exposure, RAW conversion, color correction, etc.) It is a very powerful program and if you need to go further it interacts very nicely with Photoshop. It is very simple to batch correct in LR - i.e. copy settings from one photo to any series of photos.

I echo the thought of practice, and focus on what makes a good photo. (Hint, it is not the camera!) Practice seeing the light. Practice composition. Look at what makes a photo good by checking out good photos in National Geographic, etc.

Truffle fries at Cagneys.

We have been to Skagway quite a few times and did the White Pass train excursion about 3 times.
Never did we see trains that close together.
This photo was taken at the northern terminus.

Echoing what has been said previously in this thread. I am a long-time vegetarian (no meat, no fish.) Although I have not been on the Jade, I have sailed previously on the Breakaway and the Jewel. I have never had an issue getting vegetarian food. In almost every case, it was well prepared, tasty and satisfying. This applies to the specialty restaurants as well. I always found the crew accommodating to my requests.
The only restaurant where there was nothing on the menu for me was Cagney's (the steakhouse.) I went there to join the rest of my family who was dining there. Even at Cagney's, I spoke to the maître d' upon arrival, and they arranged for a vegetarian dinner to be delivered from Le Bistro.
No complaints from this vegetarian.

The short answer is that you need to have the photo hosted on an online site like Photobucket, Google Pictures, Flickr, etc.. (Many free options.) You then use the site's linking option to get a link to your photo and use the "Insert Image" icon in the editor () to put the proper tags around it.
There's an extensive thread on "How To..." that has examples from just about every photo hosting site.

Thank you Dave. I will immerse myself in that thread and commence posting.

I am not sure how to embed the previous photo in the body of the message instead of it showing up as a thumbnail.

Doug. I hope you had as much fun on your Escape as I had reading about it.

So, Doug....
Are you having fun on your cruise?

Some of the Norwegian ships (I'm not sure if they all do) have a photo studio on board. I know the Jewel does. We had formal family pictures taken in the studio and they were really quite good. (I am a photographer and critical of other peoples photos.) Although they were expensive, the results were excellent. They can sell you the photos on a USB so if you want to crop/photoshop, you will be able to.

I have a few questions.
1. Is there a safe in the cabin?
2 Do you have you pay for shows?
3. Laundry facilities?
We are on the Dawn out of NOL
1. Yes
2. Most shows no. There is a dinner/theater which is a fee.
3. No self serve. They will do laundry for you for a fee.

Thank you so much for posting this review. We are going on the Escape this June with our 11 year old daughter. Your impressions and recommendations were greatly appreciated.

My solution has been to use a camera with two card slots. In the first I use a small card (4-8 GB) and swap it out every day or two. I keep this one in the safe. I configure the second slot to make a back up copy of every photo. I put a large card (e.g. 32 GB) in the second slot and leave it there for the entire vacation. This way, I always have a built-in back up.
I realize that this only works for cameras with two card slots.

Downloaded. I am eager to try this as a plugin for Lightroom. I hear good things about the HDR functionality.
