  1. I agree with Lyn, have their TA (hopefully they are high volume) discuss with Oceania.  I understand your frustration, and this subject has been raised before on CC but those of us on CC can’t do much more than sympathize.   It’s a different time out there, and their TA should be fighting for them.   Good luck.

There is no certification.   Just a thought, I googled “training your own service dog”, and came up with 15-20 good articles on it.  Instead of going to a cruise related forum to see how to train your dog, I would go to a local trainer, or google the ins and outs of training your own dog.   Less stress and more rewarding.

And, searching, I find that on page 880 -883 of the service dog thread, your concerns were answered very specifically.   Still the same as last November, and the process is still the same.  I would go back and reread the suggestions made last November for what you need to do.

I am trying to get my personal dog trained.  It is a challenge because it is not for being deaf or blind.  I suffer from a disease that qualifies me because of a Neurocognitive disorder.  What makes it hard (besides finding a trainer) is the judgement of others.

I tried to get info on CC a few months back and was basically attacked and accused of trying to cheat the system and not really needing the dog and they weren’t about to help me if that was the case.  The poster and her friend are big time CC posters in this category and has made me leery to even ask on here but I am struggling to find help so I am trying again.  The poster(s) even went so far as to say anyone that bought their own service dog jacket were fakers until a few others came back at her.

I’ll jump through the hoops I need to.  It is finding out the hoops just to get certified in the US.  Even more so to travel.  I’m trying to do it right but like I said, it isn’t easy if you aren’t deaf or blind.  I’m certainly not going to travel across the country or send my dog away for 6 months though.

So, please, I’ll take any help you can give me.

  4. You are booked on what Oceania calls a “Grand Voyage”.  Other cruise lines call it a back to back.   Your deposit is not based on the cost of your cabin or suite, see below... Per the Oceania Terms and Conditions:

    Deposit & Payment Policy
The per person, per cruise deposit required to secure your reservation is 20% of the applicable cruise fare for Owner's, Vista and Oceania Suites and $750 for all other suite/stateroom categories; for Grand Voyages the per person deposit is $1,500. Bookings made more than 120 days from sailing are required to deposit 20% of the applicable cruise fare for Owner's, Vista, and Oceania Suites and $750 for all other suite/stateroom categories within 7 days of booking. Bookings made between 91 and 120 days of sailing are required to deposit by the end of the booking day. Bookings not deposited as per this schedule will automatically be cancelled.

Here's what our email said copied and pasted:

    TRAVELERS ASSURANCE PROGRAM

NO-PENALTY CANCELLATIONS + BEST PRICE GUARANTEE

Guests and Travel Partners can now have total peace of mind knowing that should they need to cancel, for any reason, they will not lose a dollar. Guests may cancel up to 48 hours prior to cruise departure and will receive a Future Cruise Credit equal to 100% of the cruise fare paid.

Additionally, consumers and travel advisors can book with confidence knowing that up to day of sailing, should there be another applicable Oceania Cruises public promotion that offers a better value through amenities or price, they may take advantage of that promotional offer and/or price.

    PROGRAM APPLICABILITY AND CONDITIONS:

    NO-PENALTY CANCELLATIONS

    • Cancel for any reason up to 48 hours prior to departure and receive a Future Cruise Credit equal to 100% of the cruise fare paid

    • Future Cruise Credit is valid for redemption for one year from date of issue for travel departing no later than December 31, 2022

There's nothing in their to indicate payment in full is required to get a credit.

I stand corrected.   Yours has no mention of payment in full.   Hmmmmm.   I do agree that you should discuss this thoroughly with your TA, and have them pushback to Oceania.   Even my Regent cancelation notice (just checked it also, different month scheduled), says paid in full.   Dispute with CC company.

We cancelled the cruise and requested the credit for what we had paid go to the next cruise we book. They said no, which was counter to what their emails said.

I am a bit confused?   Please copy/paste the wording from your email note from your TA.  We also received email information from our TA with the following:  NOTE KEYWORDs are “Paid in full”    For our upcoming cruise: (we canceled):

    From our Oceania email:

    NO-PENALTY CANCELLATIONS

    • Once paid in full, cancel for any reason up to 48 hours prior to departure and receive a Future Cruise Credit equal to 100% of the cruise fare paid.
    • Valid for all existing reservations for scheduled voyages departing through September 30, 2020.

Will a buzaround extreme scooter fit through a standard door on Carnival Liberty

I googled Carnival Liberty Door Width, and found this:

    https://www.carnival.com/about-carnival/special-needs/wheelchair-users.aspx

you will need a handicapped cabin for that scooter it looks like.  It’s too wide for the 21” maximum.

Well,  no matter what the name.   I do hope for a wonderful new ship for Oceania, without delays!

Anyhow, if there are those who do know anyone with any insight or influence,  please tell them to consider the exclusive Spa Terrace area, and take a look at these areas like the Sanctuary, the Haven, and other exclusive and adult areas that are now on other lines!

You do understand that there are fewer than half a dozen children on most cruises on Oceania, right?   Take a look at Other Premium plus and Luxury lines for what Oceania’s competition really is.   It is not the mass mkt lines!    I would imagine Oceania knows their target market pretty good.

  9.  I know you’ve thought of this, but here’s my take...We’ve had everything from a Camry to a Prius, and everything small in between pick us up ordering an Uber X.   Do you have any friends with a Prius?   Try the wheelchair in it, see if it fits, try a Ford Escape, or another small car..not sure anyone can tell you exactly yes or no, as there are 15 or so styles of cars that are acceptable for Uber X rides (per search on Uber X in google).

One of my clients has a dog from Paws With A Cause. He needed to raise $25,000 to get a professionally trained dog to assist with his daily living tasks because of Cerebral Palsy ( certainly an obvious disability). The dog is task trained inside his house and does not accompany him outside the house except for walks. Asked him why, said was too easy for people to contaminate the training,  too big a risk of injury by a another dog and being accompanied by care aides, no need. He is on his second dog because the first passed at 8 yrs old.

As I am very familiar with Paws With a Cause, and volunteer for Southeastern Guide Dogs, I can assure you, he didn’t pay $25k for the dog.  I am sure he meant $25, for the fee.   There is no charge for dogs through either of these charities.   If he used an online funding, I feel for the folks that donated, as they were duped.   Also, dogs are trained for inside and outside, so I believe he received a fake dog from another vendor.

WOw, I guess I've just never traveled on Oceania on these high demand deck days. It's hard to fathom every chair having something on it by 8AM. I'd love to see a picture of that.

The last time we were on Riviera (Christmas 2018), all loungers around pool were “Saved” via purse, blanket, books, hats, etc by 9 AM.   Table overflowing with stuff by 11 AM, people having pissing contests and one yelling fight with a bit of puffing up their chests.  We got up and left.   Good thing for larger balconies in our case.  We never went back to deck during sea days.

"In 14 days’ time (4 February 2020), our model predicts the number of infected people in Wuhan to be greater than 190 thousand"

"Our model suggests that travel restrictions from and to Wuhan city are unlikely to be effective in halting transmission across China; with a 99% effective reduction in travel, the size of the epidemic outside of Wuhan may only be reduced by 24.9% on 4 February. "

    More here:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/02/health/coronavirus-pandemic-china.html

"In the last three weeks, the number of lab-confirmed cases has soared from about 50 in China to more than 17,000 in at least 23 countries; there have been more than 360 deaths.

But various epidemiological models estimate that the real number of cases is 100,000 or even more. While that expansion is not as rapid as that of flu or measles, it is an enormous leap beyond what virologists saw when SARS and MERS emerged."

"It is “increasingly unlikely that the virus can be contained,” said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "

Ya’ll do realize that this poster is mentioning site medrxiv which is NOT peer reviewed and as such is a breeding ground for “unsubstantiated” claims.   This is not a credible source in the US In the AMA’s eyes, and does in fact cause the mob effect for fear mongering.    Pls, all, make your own decisions on fact, your physicians recommendations, based on your situation, not some anonymous poster on an open forum.

Thanks for posting this.  I have an oxygen unit that needs the batteries charged often.

It'll  be my first time with needing the oxygen so am worried about how it'll all work out.

Who did you contact on Princess to get permission to bring the things on with you?

    Help!  LuLu

You may wish to create a new thread concerning your POC and questions you have concerning the batteries and Princess (I feel it is probably across the board, as all cruise lines approve and allow POC’s and batteries for them onboard), and place it on the disability board listed here:  https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/114-disabled-cruise-travel/

as this is an unrelated topic to this 2016 thread, and it would get more visibility and answers.

  14. It has nothing to do with age, Ponant advises on their website, many cruises that list this requirement for every passenger.   Don’t like it?  Don’t cruise with them on the cruises listed.

for example, the Miami to Lisbon cruise states:

We remind you that all our ships have a doctor on board and medical facilities. However, these cannot, under any circumstances, be compared to any medical structure on land. Given the remote areas in which we will be sailing for a number of days, safety requirements mean that we are obliged to ask each passenger signing up for this program to provide us, no more than 45 days before departure, with a medical certificate from their GP, as well as the completed medical questionnaire received during registration.

  15. It has nothing to do with age. Ponant has guests submit medical forms on certain cruises, as per their information outlined, and documented on the specific cruise.....for example, the Miami to Lisbon cruise states:

Every year Chick Fil A sponsors a cruise for all owners and operators aboard a cruise ship.  For the 2019 year it was held on the RCCL Oasis.  The 2020 ship and date have not been announced at this time.   The Chick Fil A Foundation also announced the 2020 priorities for giving, addressing child homelessness, hunger and education: https://thechickenwire.chick-fil-a.com/news/chick-fil-a-foundation-announces-2020-priorities

And FYI, LOL, alcohol was NOT removed from the ship...I absolutely think if you really heard these stmts, they have a great sense of humor!!!!!!   Gotta love how rumors start!    My Next door neighbor is an owner of many here in SW FL and goes every year to the events.

  18. I was fine, until I read your stmt of not being fair!??   Please see the Terms and Conditions of your cruise:

    https://www.oceaniacruises.com/legal/terms-conditions/

Passport and Visa requirements, and regulations in regards to vaccination certificates and other health requirements vary by destination. It is the sole responsibility of each guest to obtain and have available the appropriate valid travel and health documents for their chosen itinerary. Any guest traveling without the proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of cruise fare or any other travel components purchased from Oceania Cruises will be issued. Passports must be valid six months from the date of trip completion. Due to airline security measures, your passport name must match your airline ticket name or you may be denied boarding.

I called O, the delay is due to rough seas. They claim they can turn the ship around in 90 minutes and boarding will be at 1:00pm for everyone which means there will be a mad dash to get onboard. Very few pax will know about the delay, they will show up at 11:00 thinking they can board early and will have to wait. I predict lots of pissed off people tomorrow.

Even for people with flights at noon, they are going to miss them unless Sirena does get in earlier. I suppose if that happens to us next Saturday Feb. 1 when we return to Miami, credit card travel insurance would cover the delay. Our flight is at 10:30, normally plenty of time to get to MIA.

This happened to us on the Riviera.  Oceania attempts to contact everyone's TA via email to announce this delay.  If no TA, they will attempt an email to those who booked direct.  I say attempt, because quite a few folks don’t read their emails, and probably should.  We stayed at the same hotel as Oceania puts their folks up at, so we all banded together, had the hotel keep our luggage and went out shopping and lunch!    We all boarded around 3:30, and walked straight on!   No fuss, no lines, no anger.

  20. I would try to convince him to stay home with the following (since he won’t listen to his Dr):   Who is he taking with to carry him around the ship?  Obviously he doesn’t want a wheelchair, but even then, who will he be paying for, to take care of him?   What nurse is he bringing with to assist in his day to day activities, and getting from cabin to other parts of ship?   Also, he realizes that the ship is not capable of handling post stroke patients, and he may be taken off at any port if on-board Doctor says so.   Advising him that you or your loved ones will be busy and not able to attend to his needs, may slap some sense into him.   Sorry, but I think a solid no, with a stern look, and some tough love is what I would do.     You have enough on your plate already!     Let us know the outcome, I feel bad for you and the family member, but there are times that you just need to say no.
