  1. Spent over an hour last night on the phone with DD planning our upcoming cruise with so many, many days to go.

BF at his desk, me on the couch, both of us with Bermuda showing on google maps. He had our travel guide, I had CC open.

We did some planning last night, too.

I bring the stuff with me to work everyday to squeeze in planning, but it's really hard because I have to everything requiring internet on my cell phone. The internet filters here are insanely strict. They micromanage like crazy and it drives me up the walls after my previous job, where I could do whatever as long as my actual work was done and the phone was quiet.

  2. Join right in ... The fun thing is, your "first cruise" excitement is contagious.

We still count down the days and play the "in three weeks, at this time, we'll be out to sea, drinking our coffee on the deck" game.

Hahaha, on Sunday I kept saying "exactly two weeks from this moment, we'll be on our ship exploring/eating/whatevering..."

No wonder BF thinks I'm overwhelming.

  3. I went white water rafting recently and decided to try one of the store's $10 waterproof smartphone cases out on my S3. Mind you, this was with no intention of ever submerging it with my phone inside without thoroughly testing it with a piece of paper or something inside, first.

Well, long story short I did not manage to stay in the raft very well, backflipped out with my phone in its case, completely submerging it several feet under. Turns out the case works fine! Can't find the brand just now, but if I do I'll post it.

  4. Expect about 30 minutes of wait before you can exit the ship.

The Breakaway is often a little in advance on her itinerary, so making the 9:30 to St-George shouldn't be a problem at all.

I forgot to mention Gibb's Hill Lighthouse in my previous post... It's not too far from the Dockyard, so either on day 2 or 3, if you have somewhere like 2 hours of spare time ( including travel time to and from, and going up to take pictures ) you can make it easily. Or you will probably want to catch it on your way to a beach on day 3 and maximize your time like that.

Fabulous. We're planning on waking up early, maybe enjoying some room service on our balcony as the ship docks, depending on our arrival time, and being ready to get off basically immediately so we can maximize our time in Bermuda.

  5. Excellent question but sorry no suggestions to give...My first time going to Bermuda in October and I too love taking pictures!!

Where is this church mentioned located?

I've found three that look to be worth a visit. In St. George there is the unfinished church, which looks amazing, and St. Peter's. In Hamilton is the Church of the Most Holy Trinity or something along those lines. It's a gothic cathedral. It looks gorgeous, too, so I'm sure James and I will include it in our list.

Feel free to ask your own questions in here. I don't mind and might learn something awesome in the process.

  6. Excellent. I think we might just do a two-day bus pass since I want to kayak on the third day (I love watersports if they don't require balance).

And tips for where to eat? For those who've sailed on the Breakaway, any advice on ensuring we get off as early as possible. James was all pouty yesterday when I told him we might not be able to get off the first second the ship is in port.

  7. Reading all the other threads is taking a long time, although I will continue doing so in addition to creating this one.

Headed to Bermuda in two weeks on the Breakaway, so we get the Wednesday morning arrival, Friday evening departure deal. My boyfriend is 31, I'm 26, neither of us drinks a lot, parties, goes to clubs, etc.

What we do to excess is photography. If he had his way, no nook of Bermuda would go unexplored and unphotographed by us, but FOOL! AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!

So we're trying to keep our "See this, photograph that!" list reasonable. We will not be renting bikes or anything of the two-wheeled variety, so transportation will be down to ferries, buses, taxis, kayaks, and, when all else fails, our feet. Lucky us, we both have two, with no plans to acquire or lose any prior to or during the trip.

So if you had a backpack full of camera equipment, an SO with his/her own backpack full of camera equipment, and a desire to see and experience the best of Bermuda, where would you go?

I'm thinking day one we can hit up St. George and work our way west, making sure we're back at the dockyard for our evening cruise into the Bermuda Triangle. Day two we'll go into Hamilton for a few hours, then maybe the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse? If we can get over by Tom Moore's Jungle that'd be nice, but I'm not sure if that's realistic. We'll be eating lunch and dinner on the island day two for sure, regardless, so we can maximize our time on-shore. Day three will be all about the water. I was thinking of renting a two-person kayak from H2O Sports for a few hours early in the day, then kayaking around, hitting up beach-like areas as we go (cameras still in-hand, just far more carefully). Then maybe in the afternoon we can do the Dockyard for a bit before getting back on the ship as late as we can manage without being abandoned by the ship.

Would St. George and area be worth doing on the longer day? Or maybe there's a chance we could fit Tom Moore's Jungle in on day one? I don't know.

Also, tea. Tea is very important to us on this trip, as it is one of his main goals and missions. He wants to drink tea and he wants to acquire some to take home. I'm personally interested in the rum cakes and ice cream I keep reading about. Recommendations on these would be much appreciated.

  8. Ahhh... I have no cruise stories yet. But two weeks from now my boyfriend and I will be on both of our first cruise EVER en route to Bermuda. He's never even really left the country! I'm planning (loosely) our days in Bermuda, or at least trying to. It's hard because we WANT to see everything, but there just isn't enough time. If anybody who has been to Bermuda has ideas for a couple of photography-loving people (early 30s and mid 20s), let me know!

    SO EXCITED

  9. 95 days for us as of today but it was 223 when we started. We'd never booked so far in advance. Last year we'd only booked 6 weeks out. While I think it's too hard to wait that long again, contrarily, it's exciting having something to look forward to also.

I booked about 206 days out, down to 15 now. It's been a long wait, but it's going to be worth it.

  10. Weather-wise, NYC is chilly in November, but it's not totally unbearable. I get cold if i walk into 75-in-the-shade type of temps and find november tolerable enough here. Farmer's Almanac is more likely to help you plan clothing choices than the weather channel, but layers are key at that time of year.

  11. We did the 5 day to Canada 8/25 to 8/30/2007

Came home with a sunburn. I loved that cruise!!!

My boyfriend and I actually discussed the possibility of taking a cruise up that way. We both think it would be gorgeous and fun. I just also get cold before most people. It's problematic in the winter.

Not surprised you'd get sunburned. Anywhere the sun can shine or bounce off clouds a person can get burned.

  12. "Now, if something were to happen that diverted us to Canada? I'd freeze my rear end off outside in skirts and sandals because I'd be spending so much time taking photographs of everything."

I think you better take a look at your geography books - not all of "Canada" is the frozen tundra. Today we had a temperature of 27c or in the mid to high 80s today with temps even higher in the next few days. So in the very unlikely incident that you were diverted to Canada you will be perfectly fine in your skirts and sandals.

I'm well aware of all of this. I am also cold at about 70F.

  13. Two things:

    1. I hope we port on the port side on 9/17.

    2. Has anyone else seen that there is a Carnival ship docked in Bermuda on the webcam today? (it's a 17+ minute loop from 4-19-2013).

I'll make you a deal. I'll will the ship to port on the port side for your week if you will the ship to port on the starboard side for the week after when I'm there. [emoji6]

  14. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the 21st sailing. Boyfriend and I are set for Bermuda and I think it would break his heart if we pulled out of NYC and they came on and said we were bound for Florida and the Bahamas. The Bahamas he'd eventually get over, but Florida is possibly his least favorite place on earth. He hates humidity, Floridians (according to him they're all retired New Yorkers who don't know how to drive, I just tell him the Panhandle part of Florida is fine), and the bugs.

I'd be torn between Harry Potter World and the Kennedy Space Center for that day. The Space Center might at least cheer him up, though.

Now, if something were to happen that diverted us to Canada? I'd freeze my rear end off outside in skirts and sandals because I'd be spending so much time taking photographs of everything.

Regardless, a cruise is a cruise is a cruise in my mind and it still means I'm not at work that week. My preference is strongly for Bermuda, though. I even bought a guidebook! I never buy guidebooks for anywhere I go and I travel any chance I get.
