  1. Our first cruise will be to the Mexican Riviera (someone else's pick) and I have zilch interest in beaches, but I've found plenty of interesting alternative activities for each port. I started by browsing the excursions page from the cruise line's website. There are obviously other things you can do each place as well but it was a nice jump-off. If you and your daughters do love the beach, you can definitely accommodate the whole family instead of skipping beaches completely.

  2. The thing is I doubt anyone is purposely over-withholding a significant amount as a way to generate savings.

No, many people do exactly that. And some react so angrily, I can only guess they think that the practice leads directly to the IRS increasing their own tax rates. Because otherwise it's none of their affair. (You have already clarified you didn't mean it that way but we have some other 'Irresponsible idiots!' posts in this thread.)

  3. Does anyone else use there tax refund as a vaction fund . This has been a good system for us, we have done this since we were married in 76 and most years we did get to do something. Over the years we have moved up in refunds and trips , we spend more than our refund but it is a good start .

Not specifically cruises but as a vacation fund, yes, frequently. It's... oddly controversial but works for us and harms no one.

  4. What in the world did I say that you think is rude? I am not the slightest bit offended. (I think it's impossible to become offended at something on a message board, but nothing in this thread even has me upset.) I have no idea what you are talking about. You need to stop assigning your personal feelings to MY posts. I'm simply trying to get this figured out. Sorry if I'm not being helpful. Stop trying to cause problems.

I think 'NCL Junkie' was interpreted as a dig.

  5. I was a child in the 70s, no electronics or organized activities, but I was still incredibly bored on family vacations. Personal interests are not hereditary.

Whining is unacceptable, but I wouldn't punish our son simply for being bored. Or take him on the next cruise.

And chores are their own kind of boring.

  6. One useful bit of advice we've picked up here is that the kind of port makes a difference. If you can just walk off the ship, easy. But if you're waiting in line for a tender, like possibly at Cabo for your cruise, people who booked ship excursions get off first on some lines and that can save you as much as an hour. That's worth something.
