We had a special menu available on Princess. January 26th 2015 - 10 day Vietnam Grand Adventure.
Was part of the first formal night menu on the Royal Princess Feb 17-27th and I didn't see too many passengers going for it, myself included. I did take the terrine and soup which were quite good!

Depending on what ship you'll be sailing, there was a thread maybe about a week ago that said that the Royal and Regal serve fresh-brewed coffee at no additional charge. It's machine-made and they do single servings, a bit like keurig or tassimo.
Just in case, I'd invest on a coffee card to ensure you get the good stuff.
-
But if you use your CDN credit card to pay it won't your credit card charge you the 2.5% conversion fee on top of the 10% exchange rate the Princess is charging?
That's the beauty of it, the charge on the credit card is made in Canadian dollars, not US, so there is no conversion charge. :)
EDIT: I'll elaborate.
For Canadians to buy $500 US dollars of OBC (or any other amount for that matter), Princess will surcharge 10% and bill in Canadian dollars, so you end up with a $550 payment on your credit card in Canadian dollars. That beats the 25% currenty exchange PLUS 2.5% conversion fee.
Once you get onboard, you will see $500 US dollars of OBC on your account. Make sense?

There appears to be different AV input options on that TV shown.
Would a VGA to VGA work - assuming there is a VGA output on the laptop ?
VGA to VGA would work, but you'd need an audio cable (male to male) as well for sound. Only HDMI carries both image and sound.
-
A nice tip for us Canadian travelers, you can call the Gifts department at Princess and purchase OBC at parity +10% (ie. $500 US dollars of OBC for $550 Canadian dollars)!
Great deal first off to pay far less than the going exchange rate and second to avoid additional currency conversion fees on your credit card!
-
Just booked:
coffee cards (US$31). Price quoted by Princess rep: C$34.10. Price in email receipt C$34.10.
multiple US$500 Onboard Credits. Price quoted by Princess rep: C$550. Price in email receipt C$550.
So, 10% conversion, compared to 20%+ going rate. Not par, as some reported last year, but still a good deal. We saved almost $400.
Thank-you to everyone who has contributed to the thread.
No, par IS possible, I did it 3 weeks ago. Bought $600 OBC and prepaid gratuities 2x $115 all in US dollars and the charge on my visa was $830 Canadian dollars. If that's not parity, I don't know what it is.
I did this through my vacation planner as did everyone else in our group. Not all of them know how to do it and I think very few of them do, but the system does allow them to give parity. Anyhoo, a 10% top-up isn't that big a deal compared to the going exchange rate.

I haven't done my cruise yet, but from what I've read these items are extremely popular:
- Fettuccine Alfredo in Parmesan bowl
- Any pizza at Alfredo's
- Anything that's got the word "souffle"
- The volcano (banana split type dessert)
- The love boat dream dessert
I'll have my own personal list by the end of February. ;)

For excursions can't you ensure to leave enough OBC by the end of the trip to cover for it?

Also heard the news about the further drop in the Canadian dollar so called to add some OBC. We already have some OBC but thought we'd prepay for more.
One thing I found is when I tried to add US$600 they said the amount was not covered by one of their Gift Item numbers so the conversion would be made by my Bank. Since that was what I was trying to avoid I asked for a $500 credit instead and there was a Gift # for that so they charged my credit card C$550.
It may be just that I just got the wrong agent, but you may have to ask for several $100 credits to make sure they do the conversion "in house" at the favourable rate.
Someone didn't feel like doing some leg work. This comes right off my special service order summary and it's for exactly $600.

Hooray for them, meanwhile a lot of Canadians will be rethinking their travel plans. We have three cruises booked, not to mention hotels and airfare. From the time of booking until now we're looking at an increase in cost in excess of $6000. There comes a point where it's not worth it.
Agreed, I'm glad to be traveling in a few weeks. Still have to purchase our US money, but I don't think we'll be using the credit card much with the dollar taking a nose-dive like this. That's what happens when someone decides that our economy is gonna be dictated by one and only one thing.

With the Bank of Canada's statement due out today, the media is suggesting our Cdn dollar will drop even further ..

Haha, that already happened. They took the key interest down a quarter point and immediately after the announcement was over, the CDN $ went down 1.12 cents. What do you know it'll be 2002 again and there will be tons of Americans coming into Canada to buy stuff.

This forum is extremely informative and the people in it very kind, experienced and knowledgeable. Love coming here and learning something new every day!

I am so looking forward to Alfredo's! Of all the places to eat, it's the only one that gets nothing but great reviews.
Thanks for making me slobber all over my keyboard, Dave, it needed some cleaning. ;)
Anyone know if it happens to be open for lunch on boarding day?
-
They might have to add Canadian tax on the $500.
Buying OBC is like buying a gift card- it's not a taxable product.

There must be some other mechanism the vacation planners can use then because I bought $600 worth of US dollar OBC earlier this week and the charge on my visa was $600 Canadian dollars. That's 100% parity, no 10% top off.

Some vacation planners are able to do transactions at par. There doesn't seem to be many, but it's possible.
edit: I meant this for OBC, gratuities, services and goods.

I'm also interested in this... We are not platinum, elite or in a suite and I'm afraid that by the time we board it might already be fully booked.

I saw one comment in another thread that the beer isn't very hoppy. He wasn't impressed.

Are your family members are connected to the web? Do you have a smart phone? You may want to think about using Skype. You can get an onboard internet package or just go to any Diamonds International for free WiFi. Skype has a talk only setting that won't be as finicky in low bandwidth situations. Either way, I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas cruise.

Apple devices also have the same feature where you can do Facetime with audio only to save on bandwidth. Go into the Facetime app and you should see that you have video and audio tabs. Video can work when you're in a major city where the internet is speedier, but for anywhere else, stick to audio and you'll be much better off.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

I hope they'll offer stargazing for our mid-February cruise on the Royal. I'll be all over that. Or maybe they can tie a small boat to the ship and I can just tag along at a safe distance away from the light...

No, I am not considering any changes whatsoever. As long as ebola remains transmissible only through body fluid exchanges, it won't make much ground outside of places where funeral customs encourage touching the dead.
Princess is a lot more likely to cancel the cruise than I am to not go.

In the event that you'd like to see more photos of the Royal, David took a LOT of pictures and posted flickr links in his thread, Two Weeks on ROYAL PRINCESS in pictures: Dec. 1-15, 2013 B2B

Hope that's what you're looking for.

OP, I only have one word for you: Dave.

More food porn than necessary, yet I feel compelled to go see Dave's pictures AGAIN week after week. Just click on the Royal Princess , Part 1 and Part 2 Flickr links and prepare to be delighted, enchanted and become a drooling wreck.

I'll bet you that most of that weight is caused by an overabundance of salt in food. Salt's a nasty thing if too much of it is taken. It can cause quick weight gain because of water retention (You get thirsty after eating something salty and a lot of it doesn't get "evacuated" because of salt's effect. Do that for 4 weeks and watch the pounds stack up) and it's bad for blood pressure.
It's probably just a matter of your friend going back to his healthy lifestyle and he'll see those extra pounds come off pretty quick.
However, I'll chime in with the others, a proper weight loss and exercise plan shouldn't leave you terribly hungry and tired. On the contrary, it should make you feel way more alive and well.
Storytime:A friend weighed 215 lbs last year and underwent a 5 month weight loss diet of 1 meal a day and lots of cardio exercise.
His weight before the cruise: 175.
His cruise was 4 weeks long and his weight after the cruise: 198.
I'm thinking, dam all that suffering and pain throughout the months to lose the weight...empty stomach growling, always tired/exhausted at work, always hungry...only to gain it all back.
As for me...I might take a cruise next year early winter. So I have plenty of time to lose. I am thinking of going down to a healthy 160 lbs which allows me 10lbs of room for weight gain during the cruise.
Sushi on Royal
in Princess Cruises
Posted
They did have sushi for lunch once when I was on board Feb 17-27. I'm pretty sure it was on the first sea day (which ended up being the second as we had to skip Princess Cays), Feb 19th. It was good, but choice was limited to vegetarian california type rolls or smoked salmon and shrimp. It was better than none at all. I didn't try the sushi at the Ocean Terrace.
