  1. There are clocks at every exit on the ship. Simply make sure your WATCH is set to "ship's time", and you won't have a problem! Don't rely on your cell phone, as it will show local time and local time does NOT matter to you at all....ship time is all you need to know!

Local time is VERY important to know if your excursion guide says he will meet you at a certain time!

  2. On the Norwegian site it says: "Boarding Time in Ports of Call

In all ports of call, it is also the guest's responsibility to be back onboard the ship no later than one (1) hour prior to the ship's scheduled departure time. Please be aware that shipboard time may differ from the port of call and it is the guest's responsibility to follow the shipboard time. In the event a guest misses the ship, it will be the guest's responsibility to pay all expenses incurred to rejoin the ship."

We are sailing on the Star on Sunday. Do the ports of call times differ from the ship time in any of the following ports?: Roatan, Belize City, Costa Maya and Cozumel.

We have "non cruise line" excursions booked at all of these and wonder about the timing that our drivers will pick us up.

Thanks for any help you can give as soon as possible.

  3. You should also get a soda 'mug' (like you do on other cruise lines like Royal) that you can have them fill (and not just a regular cup).

Attached is a (small) photo of the mug and general info.

    Mikki

Mikki . . . thanks for the photo, but it's too small to read. Do they have "do it yourself" machines around the ship to fill your mug, or must you present it to a bartender?

  4. If you purchase a soda package on the Star, how are sodas dispensed?

On RCI they give you a special mug with a chip in it that you can fill from self serve machines located throughout the ship.

On HAL they give you a special card that you must take to the bar and they give you paper cups full of soda.

How is it done on the Star?

  5. What seems curious to me is that there is only two excursions listed for Harvest Caye, Belize when we cruise. I am used to seeing many more options for excursions. I did go ahead and book one of the excursions and originally it was priced around $56.00 each. However, the website now shows that excursion but the price is listed as $0.00. These two things are what made me wonder if maybe NCL is behind schedule again and won't be ready with the island in February.

If anyone hears of anything, please post.

This video says they are behind schedule:

  6. What a bunch of silliness.

Often, on a Caribbean or a Med cruise you will find us in casual dress, sometimes short, on the top deck. On formal nights-most especially if it is very warm. Could be having a drink and watching the world go buy or eating at the buffet.

Does anyone really expect people not to do this? Does anyone expect HAL to enforce their outdated code. If they did, a la fashion police, their ships would either be half full or they would be selling them off at $40. day!

The notion that people should be dressed in the formal wear code in order to step our of their cabin threshold on formal night is well, simply archaic and is most likely unacceptable to the vast majority of the cruise market.

AMEN! Although we have already booked our HAL cruise, I now wonder what line might have been a better choice. We are seniors and won't be dressing in shorts, halters, and flip flops, but we do wish to be comfortable in casual clothing on our vacation. I wonder which line is more "casual oriented" yet doesn't cater to families with children or loud party seeking guests. Surely, there must be a Happy Medium for "every day folks" somewhere?

  7. On a cruise we took last year on Royal Caribbean, I purchased a soft drink "package" that provided unlimited soft drink refills for a flat fee. We were given a special insulated cup with a chip in it that could be used in "self -serve" machines throughout the ship, or presented at a bar for a refill.

Does HAL offer a similar package?

I sure can't find anything on soda packages on their website.

    Thanks for any insight.

  8. From HAL's site, this statement is under "Is there a Dress Code?":

Printed T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours.

Does this mean that nice shorts and shirt or blouse can't be worn to eat supper at the buffet on the Lido deck?

I wonder what time "evening" starts?

  9. I booked almost 18 months out. Because I booked with Carnival's early saver rate, I can take advantage of any price drops until I cruise. I also got the cabin I wanted and have time to save.

    Thanks for sharing that information.

Now that's getting the best of both worlds! I've never heard of that program.

Does anyone know if the other cruises have similar programs?

  10. The point the article was making is that the best price reductions are within 60 days of sailing. If you've booked very early and paid your fee in full prior to that 60 day window, then there's no way to adjust the price you paid to take advantage of the reduction.

Has anyone responded to a price reduction after they've paid in full and been offered OBCs or a cabin upgrade in place of the reduced price?
