  1. One thing to know about the Manhattan room is there is usually live entertainment and a floor for dancing. So it is a great choice for more of a birthday party.

You may also have the option to dine at Cagney's as planned then move to the Manhattan Room to redeem your cake certificate and enjoy the entertainment if there is still something planned for 9pm or so.

Happy 50th, I had a surprise party and all in attendance, from 5 to 85 found the energy to dance and that is one of my best memories of the evening.

By the way I've been reading that they now take photos at dinner and want you to make a decision on if and which to purchase. Keep that in mind for your budget planning. Others can comment on whether that photo could be a part of a photo package, but for some reason I think I've read they are not. I have not been on a ship this year so cannot share any first hand experience with the process. As a solo traveler I rarely pose for photos. but on our upcoming family cruise my mother will insist so I may just buy her a photo package as a Christmas gift to use on our spring break cruise.

We had the photo package last year as a freebie on our Escape honeymoon and the dinner pictures were included. All of the pictures we took, including the "walk the plank" ones were included. Same on our 2017 Getaway cruise where we paid for the photo package.

As far as the original question, I agree that it depends on the taste of the birthday person. Cagney's is a great choice, I'm sure you'll love it! Bayamo was personally my favorite restaurant. Moderno was great, too. And, honestly, I really, really loved the Manhattan Room, too. On our last cruise, I actually just skipped lunch every day and then had one MDR dinner and one specialty dinner every sea day. Crazy, I know, but so worth it instead of ordering from the same basic lunch menu every day.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that as long as you are a Chowhound, you'll love any restaurant on the Escape! :)

  2. Everyone complained about this stuff happening last year, too. The Baltics sounds lovely, but I think if you are a middle-class traveler doing it as a bucket list trip/once in a lifetime type trip it just makes sense to do a land tour. Really only makes sense to do the Baltics cruise for Haven passengers who cruise multiple times a year and are already bored with the Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries.

  3. If I was on a cruise that missed half the ports, I wouldn't sign up for a second one. I'm on a South America cruise in December where we easily could miss a few ports. I won't be happy if that happens.
Strange that you would volunteer yourself for a situation that you think could easily occur, and that would make you unhappy if it happens.

Honestly, this is why we stick to cheap Caribbean cruises instead of expensive, often missed itineraries like Baltics, Bermuda, Alaska, etc.

  4. Since he is a minor, you should absolutely insist that he be allowed to board with you. It is one thing when people pay for one haven suite and want their entire party of adults to board with them. Common sense dictates that your son should be allowed to board with you.

We are going on the Getaway December 23 with an extended family group. My husband and I are in a Haven Aft Penthouse and our 17 year old son said he would rather stay in a triple with his older cousins in a regular room than with us and forgo the Haven perks. My question is regarding check in. We did not make the reservation for his room, so should he check in with the cousins or with us? I'm a little concerned because he has a different last name from any of us. I have full legal and physical custody but considering he is a minor, I don't want him to have any problems getting on the ship. Maybe I should call NCL... ?
  5. We used walkie talkies on our first 2 cruises even though a lot of people are very against them here. They work OK. They aren't perfect, but they are helpful if you don't have a smartphone. Now we just use the iConcierge app to communicate. Unsurprisingly, it isn't perfect, either.

  6. We are intermediate snorkelers and were wondering if any one has done the Barrier reef snorkel through NCL from Harvest Caye ? The other option looks like take the ferry and book a private excursion out of Placencia. Any information on either would be much appreciated. We sail in January and we are trying to figure out something else to do for our second time to the island.
Where can I find out more about the ferry to Placencia? Is it an excursion? Is it included?

  7. dang. Filled out all the info, hit "book" and got "500 - Internal Server Error"

ETA: checked the website, and it's booked! Yay!

I'm so happy to hear this! The Jade was the first ship we sailed on, when our daughter was almost 5 and we all loved it. They had a waterslide back then (1/2016) but I think I've heard that they took it out in the renovation. Who cares, though? Our daughter is 7 now and she will only go on tiny little waterslides. She actually would still probably happily play in the kids pool on the Jade. If your son has never been on a waterslide, he might like the slide they have there. It is more toddler-sized maybe 6 feet high, but it is in a nice shady corner that is protected from the wind by glass, and hardly any kids used it when we were on the Jade. The Jade also had several kid-friendly hot tubs, which our daughter loved. (She loves any hot tub, but the ones on the Getaway and the Escape were super crowded.)

I'm not a Disney person either, and I've realized I'm actually not that into the big ships. We're going on the Sun next month and I can't wait to go back to the great service you get when there are so many fewer people on board!

The fact is that the Jade isn't any more or less kid friendly than any other NCL ship. It is a family friendly cruise line and there will always be kids and things for kids to do on all NCL ships, especially with a Caribbean itinerary during a national school break in the USA. There are just ships that are more popular with the kind of people (of all ages) who love the newest, biggest thing and like having all the bells and whistles. To me, it doesn't sound like that is your son's personality. There are definitely family events every day on the Jade, stuff like circus school and scavenger hunts that are for adults and kids to do together.

  8. Also, could you get a picture of the side view deck map that is posted by the elevators on most ships? And maybe some drink menus? And specialty menus? And maybe even some MDR menus?

Sorry I'm asking for so much stuff, this has just been the hardest cruise to research because there aren't very many Sun posts and the itinerary is brand new...

Did anyone set up a meet and greet for your roll call? I tried to set one up for our cruise, October 14, but no one has responded. :/ It is the quietest roll call I've ever been on!

  9. Oh! I'm so excited to see this trip report! We sail on the Sun in 4 weeks! Can you please check the touch screens to see what is available to rent at GSC and Harvest Caye? I want to use our $50 credit, but don't want to spend too much over that. I think clamshells and kayaks are supposed to be in the $50 range. Is there anything else under $100?

  10. We are definitely going to walk from the port to a couple of paladares in old Havana, and then down the Malecon, but I was really hoping to see Fusterlandia, which would definitely require a bus ride. I ordered a Havana guide that supposedly talks about "real Havana" including public transportation, so hopefully that will tell me something.

  11. Do you get wristbands or anything? Otherwise, I would think two adults and the child could go to the cabana and leave any stuff they want to leave there. Then the child could go swim and fifteen minutes later, the other two adults could arrive. If the 12 yo really is going to be swimming 95% of the time, and the adults will presumably be going back and forth to the pool at least a little, then there probably won't even be any time that there are more than 4 people at the cabana. I don't know how reasonable HC staff are about this type of situation, but it seems worth a try.

  12. We have the $50 shorex credit because we booked that weekend where everyone got all 5 Free at Sea choices. But we've never taken a ship excursion and don't really have an interest in it. What things can you rent at Great Stirrup Cay and Harvest Caye that are completely or mostly covered by the $50? I'm thinking of things like kayaks, clamshells, etc. Not sure what else they might have, other than cabanas, which are not in my budget.

    TIA!

  13. As someone who was on that cruise, and chose to make the most of it, I don't think it's right to complain about people who were disappointed in the switch from Bermuda to Canada. Was it necessary? Obviously. But it is expected that people like myself, who live in Maine and spent a small fortune on a suite, would be upset about cruising to where they live. We vacationed in Canada every year growing up. Bar Harbor is awesome, but I live 50 miles away from there. I used to work there in the summers through college. I never would have spent multiple thousands of dollars to cruise there. Did I have a great time? Absolutely. Was I disappointed? Absolutely. That's the other side of this story.
I think this absolutely counts as "the right attitude". Of course someone would be disappointed to cruise right back to where they had flown away from! I think that is very natural and I don't think anyone complains about people feeling disappointed and expressing that in an appropriate manner. What makes me roll my eyes is the people who blame the cruise line. There really is no way it would be fiscally or morally responsible to navigate a huge expensive ship full of people into the path of a hurricane.

    Great review, OP!

  14. Hi all! I know reservations are recommended, but how feasible are walk-ins for the MDRs and Specialties (specifically Moderno)? I just don't really want to have to chain myself to a restaurant for each night already, especially when I don't know the menus in the MDR. The only meal I feel inclined to book asap is the Illusionarium show as I'd like to see that on Dress Up Night.

(BTW, recent menus from the past sailing or two would be SO appreciated!)

I totally agree with everything Bird said, but also keep in mind that you can make as many reservations as you want as long as they don't overlap.

  15. I went ahead and made 2 reservations for Cagney's and one for Moderno, just to make sure we've got something. We want to eat at Los Lobos, too, but apparently they don't take reservations?

I'm hoping the Sun will be more laid back like the Jade. On the Getaway and the Escape, we made online reservations even for the MDRs, due to advice we got here, and it contributed to our peace of mind. But the Jade was our first cruise and the best one because we didn't need reservations for anything. We didn't have the SDP on that cruise, though, so we were dining in the MDRs most evenings, with breakfasts and lunches split between the buffet and the MDRs.

  16. Reading this thread makes me Greene with envy. I have a cruise booked for March. Befor and after hotels are booked as well as two excursions but I can't find a decent non stop airfare so I have stopped planning for now in case I need to cancel. Its like having withdrawal symptoms. I NEED TO BE PLANNING!!
I hate this! I felt this way for a while with our October cruise, but we were past final payment, so cancellation wasn't an option. Finally realized that flying in to FLL and out of MIA on specific dates was the affordable option, and then I found the right hotel rooms for those dates and all was right in the world again. :)

  17. Another OCD cruise planner here. Can anyone relate to causing a cruise companion anxiety due to TMI?

I'm over 20 cruises now & traveling with a "newbie". Thought I was being helpful with all my suggestions but figuring out that some folks just like to wing it -or rely on the cruise planners to do all the thinking

Oh, yes! I can't believe I didn't open this thread until today. We're on the Sun next month, which will be our fourth cruise, but I do this for all trips. We went on our honeymoon last year and my husband finally had to tell me that he had no interest in picking out what to eat at each specialty restaurant months before the cruise, and that I was just making him super anxious.

The funny thing is that I'm compulsive about the order in which I plan things. So, since my husband won't pick what he wants to eat at each specialty restaurant, I don't want to bother making reservations, because in my mind we would pick our favorite item from each course of each specialty first, then discuss which 3 specialties to go to, based on how much we like each course we've selected, and then decide which to go to on what night...
