Hi Capt BJ, what is the current situation re buses past your place from George Town and on to Smith Cove/Barcadere? I'd like to do a bit of snorkelling there, having been to GC twice before but my wife just wants to chill out and I couldn't see anywhere to rent a beach bed in that area so was thinking of getting the bus out and walking back via your bar? We'll be there on Wed, 12th Feb. Thanks, Kev

Just for clarity, the name of the bar is "My Bar" - it is not "Capt BJ's bar"

  2. For 15 people, a private charter might be the best approach.  Looking at Fury and Sebago, which are 2 popular tour companies that I've used in the past for traditional "public" trips", both list private charters as an option on the website - but you have to call for details.  There are also lots of other private charter boats in Key West.

Great information and thank you for the map.  DH and I cycle in just about every city we visit so this is so helpful.  Do you know if it is necessary to rent bikes in advance or can you walk up?

We've been there several times and never bothered reserving early. We've also only ever rented beach cruisers. Maybe I'd think about a reservation if I really wanted a road bike or a hybrid.

Curious if the pier at Mallory Square is still out of commission? I checked the linked schedule and on my date (2/17) they are only listing a ship at Pier B and Edge at Outer Mole. Seems that security-wise they would only want to be using that one if the other 2 are in use.

    It is back in use

If you rewind the Mallory square webcam, you can see it was in use about 5 hours ago

Grand Cayman is a tender port. We have always tendered directly into Georgetown which has eating and shopping.

I was surprised last week to see two Carnival ships by Spotts Bay, which I thought was only used in certain weather conditions? I would be interested to know if ships there provide a shuttle to Georgetown?

We were staying in Bodden Town last week and saw those ships also - they were definitely shuttling to George Town.  I assumed they were there as the seas on the west side were pretty choppy for a couple days.  Our dives had to be "moved" to the south side

  6. There's bathrooms on Mallory Square,

Clinton Square Market (upstairs), which is next to the Customs House, has one - maybe the second one is done being constructed.

The Conch Train Depot has bathrooms.

These three are all pretty close together

Going south on Duval gets trickier but I seem to recall the Walgreens about half way down has bathrooms available.

Grumpy Husband in November on Holland Veendam says docking at M. (smaller ship)

Is that close to town? Thank You.

All 3 ports are close to town with Mallory Square (M) being the closest

  8. Parking in Key West, especially near the popular areas is challenging.  There are public lots where you could park and then walk a while.  Most charge (maybe all of them, but I've only used a few) 4.00 an hour / 32.00 a day.  If your plan is to, say, drive to Kermit's and get some pie, then drive to the Southermost point,  then drive to somewhere in Duval to shop (for example), I think you'll find it incredibly challenging at each location and even if you park at the nearest lots each time,  I don't know if your parking receipt from one lot will allow you to avoid a ticket at another if your hour isn't up yet.

  9. I can echo pretty much everything Grumpy says - other than the tricycle part - we just rent standard beach cruisers when we're there.  it's a great island to ride though - bike racks are everywhere.  We also rent from Eaton Bikes.  I've never noticed if they set something up near the piers for cruise passengers, but their main location is barely a mile from Mallory Square on Eaton Street

It is a VERY nice walk if you go all the way East on Front Street to the harbor, then take the harbor walk until you get to Turtle Kraals/Margaret Street - in this parking lot you can stop for "world famous" Cuban Coffee Queen.  Margaret takes you 2 blocks to Eaton and Eaton Bike is right on that corner.

Obviously from here - ride anywhere you want.  Depending on how much time you are on island and whether you;re into cycling, a circumnavigation of the island is a nice option. It's about about 10 miles.  I'd recommend clockwise - get past all the busy commercial stuff on N. Roosevelt first.

After dropping the bikes off, you can take the same route back and stop at Bo's Fish Wagon or the Waterfront Brewery (or both) Brewery has half price "fresh" brewed beer during happy hour from 4-6:30.

Do the same trolleys pick up at "B"?  Any idea how close this is to Duval Street?

Trolley pickup at Pier B is unnecessary - You disembark in a public area.  Duval St is 2 or 3 blocks away, depending how you count - maybe a 5 min walk.

  11. On a good day it's only around 80-90 minutes to Marathon from KW (obviously depending on where exactly in Marathon you are going).  The problem is most of the Overseas highway is one lane on each side and traffic incident can cause delays for miles, or shut it down completely.  Last time we drove down, a crane fell over somewhere around Islamorada and held up traffic for hours.

  12. Probably a bit late, but I too have been using Sandisk cards for many years (18-20) - both SD cards and a brief stint with Compactflash. Never had one fail, including one that was in a camera I dumped in the ocean.  The camera was instantly ruined, as were the rechargeable batteries, but the card was fine - got my pics off it like nothing ever happened and I probably kept using it until it was replaced with a faster, higher capacity card.

...Now I've gotten older and no longer dive but still have a desire to shoot photos in RAW.  We made three trips to Africa and the animal photos were shot in RAW and JPEG using a Nikon camera.

Nikon's free ViewNX-i software isn't too bad at all for developing their own NEF files. Provides all the basic adjustments and if you don't want to adjust anything, it'll apply the in-camera settings when converting to .jpg.  I used it and Capture NX2 for years before finally opting for Lightroom - mainly because I have Canon that I shoot RAW also and I found the Canon software terrible.  If i never got the Canon, i'd probabyl still use ViewNX-i and Capture NX-D (current version)

  14. I shoot RAW (.NEF is you want to be technical) because storage is cheap I don't want to decide when to do one vs the other. I can occasionally be a nuisance if i want a jpg right away, but in that case, I'll probably just use my phone for a real-time "snap and share" pic.  I find that I don't have many RAW files that need much editing when I get home and the vast majority are simply allowed to process with the lightroom profile that very closely matches the profiles the camera would have used if allowed to convert itself. Every so often though I come across that one picture that's like "dang I'm glad I shoot RAW". Shooting RAW also lets me be a little lazy taking pictures (whether anybody likes it or not)

  15. Two places we enjoyed while we were down in December

just off of Duval.  My  wife enjoys the rolled ice cream and they have a very respectable version of Hawaiian shave ice (not perfect but pretty darned close)

They technically don't have seating, but "made while you wait" nitrogen frozen ice cream in not-so-normal (but also normal) flavors
