1. There are times that if the bridge tour is included, they have to adjust the timing as not to interfere with tactical operations.

Don't think that was the case this time as we spent a good 30 minutes with the Captain in the bridge as he explained so much for us. All in all I think it is a must see at least once.

  2. Does this have to be booked after boarding? What is the cost?

Make it your number 1 priority as soon as you board. They only take about 12-14 and sometimes the sign-up list gets filled very fast. One time we didn't make it and they even did a random lottery pick. On the Ruby there were so many they actually did it twice which I believe was unusual. Cost was $150 and well worth it as stated by others. Plan on leaving extra room ( and weight if flying) in your luggage for the gifts. The deluxe robes alone weigh about seven pounds, plus photos, frames, personalized stationery, etc. We were able to see everything, including the medical center. The only down side, at least for us, was when the loading area and the print shop spend WAY to long talking. Informative, yes, but could have cut it much shorter. I think it is a must for anyone interested in seeing behind the scenes and makes you appreciate things much more.

  3. Yes, it worked out well for us because we are all really organized and kept our things out of each other's way.

My mom snores horribly, so I would never share a cabin with her. When my stepmom cruises, her stuff is all over the cabin. You can't even see the top of the vanity, lol. I wouldn't even go two people in a cabin with either of them.

My aunt likes to walk and talk in her sleep, but that's actually pretty funny. On our last cruise, she fell out of bed.:D She didn't get hurt, so that was good. That's another reason why I took the upper berth.

    Now THAT'S funny. ;)

  4.
What cabins do you prefer the most?
We always get a balcony cabin and have been forward or mid. Then we tried an aft corner cabin and now we are spoiled. The balconies are slightly larger and the view of the wake is amazing. We tried an inside once and never again. That being said, it is really what you are expecting. Some get an inside because they are less expensive and only used as a place to crash after a day of on board activities. I enjoy sitting on the balcony with my binoculars or reading. Cabins on Caribe deck seem to be preferred as the balconies a larger. We have passed up mini suites to keep our aft corner cabin. Friends always get a full suite because they like the extra room, bathtub, and other perks. I'm too cheap.
  5. We have always had balcony cabins but tried an inside when we did a New England cruise one October since we figured it would be too cold to use the balcony. Never again! It was too cramped, too dark, and too stuffy. Fortunately DW brought a small clip on fan otherwise there was no air circulation. I would try to upgrade if it were me. Granted you won't be inside most of the time but when you are...good luck.

  6. WOW, I am amazed both of those cabins are still available, when is your cruise? We have stayed in those and, yes, they are coveted cabins. They are also completely covered, which I prefer, and there are no beams to contend with, only great views of the ships wake and larger balconies. We always try for either of those two cabins and so far have been lucky enough to reserve them well in advance. You will love it!!!! Enjoy

  7. We cruised from LA to Vancouver with a day in SF and never had any trouble with rough seas. Also went to Alaska the last week in Sept one year and the weather could not have been better...never rained, no fog, just sunny days. We are on the Golden on the 9th of next month so, hopefully, our good fortune will continue. However,we are bringing along some sea-sickness meds this time since we will be in one of those aft/corner cabins and may get some ocean motion.

  8. Some people dress up in tux and gowns and look great and I think it's wonderful if that's their choice. I have seen others, mostly men, come almost too casual and I don't think that is appropriate. I have always worn a suit and tie but, saying that, on our next Hawaiian cruise in March, my DW bought me two very dressy Hawaiian shirts that I will wear with either a regular tie or a bow tie. If that isn't suitable I have no problem eating elsewhere as not to "underdress" for the occasion. Haven't quite decided what I will wear next month to Alaska, perhaps just skip the formal nights and dress for Crown Grill instead.

  9. DO NOT LISTEN TO ALL THESE POSITIVE COMMENTS...the cabin is noisy, the balcony gets covered with soot, it doesn't just vibrate, it rocks and rolls, and....oh darn it, I can't help myself, now too many people know what a fantastic cabin it is. We won't book anything else now that we have had one of these aft cabins. Been up front and mid and love the aft now. If you want it again book it for another cruise the day you board and, even then, it may already be taken. Enjoy your cruise and love the cabin.

  10. All this becomes a bit confusing, at least for me. We always leave auto-tip in place and then leave cards with additional tips for our cabin steward and table waiters. Are you saying that those "personal" tips we give are then shared also? If that is the case it certainly changes what we will do in the future. Not trying to be cheap by any means but I feel those individuals deserve the tips as a reward for their hard work and attention to details they provide. If they have to share that with someone that may not be as attentive or hard working...HMMMMM! Will someone please clarify this for me.

  11. Would you please clarify a few questions for me? I

I am not sure why this happened on so many of my coastals. They were mostly first generation Asians.

I apologize for those that have been impacted by their behavior. You will find very polite Asians from Hawaii and other parts of the world.

No need for you to apologize and I'm sure you are very respectful, as we are, of others. I agree with you that this seems to be more prevalent on the west coast for some reason. Hope you weren't offended as that was not my intent, only wanted to respond to a previous comment. Hope you enjoy many more cruises.

  12. I have a more global thought that might "help" our country become a thoughtful, kind and respectful place.

In Japan, the schools do not have janitors. The students all participate in the care and upkeep of the school. The belief is that students are more respectful, responsible and the feeling of equality is evident. Further they are taught to hold doors, offer assistance and be polite.

I think this system is perfect for a melting pot society like ours. Since parents are afraid to parent anymore, the schools can benefit by helping take up the basic training required to be responsible, respectful and cooperative. Better than the direction we are headed.

I don't want to get into a cultural debate but, on every cruise we have been on the rudest (BY FAR) are those from Japan and China. They are the ones that try to push their way in front of others and expect better service. I realize not all are that way but I could tell you stories of how rude they were. We have had exchange students from Japan stay with us, when we were younger, and they were very respectful and polite so we know not all are rude. I will tolerate rudeness to a point and then I WILL say something. Yes, life is too short to be upset by others and perhaps we, or at least I, need to be more forgiving of others . I totally agree with what others have said about the elevator situation, My DW and I have, on numerous occasions, waited sometimes for two or three elevators to pass before we get on so others could ride and not be so overcrowded. We aren't able to use the stairs very easily otherwise that would be another option.

  13. I have to say that I had never heard of this. I think it is awesome of Princess to recognize our heroes who have signed their freedom away for the sake of our country!

Yes, and the nice thing is you don't have to keep signing up for it. I have been getting the $250 obc for a few cruises now and it is definitely appreciated. Only ( not complaining) get the $100 for our upcoming Alaska cruise but still great to have something.

  14. Thanks for all the posts. Never really heard anyone mention seeing them from the ship so I thought i would inquire. When we were in Denali we asked the hotel desk clerk to wake us if they were out. Got a call about 2:30 am and that's when we were able to watch.Too bad the chances are so slim as that would make an already great cruise even better. Thanks again and hope everyone will have many fun cruises in the future. bob

  15. We were able to see the northern lights a few years ago when we were on a land/sea cruise and spent the night in Denali but we are wondering if it is possible to see them from the ship in any port?

  16. We were able to see the northern lights when we did a land/sea tour of Alaska a few years ago when we stayed the night in Denali but, wondered if a they are ever visible from any port the ships visit? bob

Oops, meant for this to be in the general forum, but perhaps some here can reply.

  17. Not sure if you are still on this post or it you are just on your cruise roll call but, when we were in Aruba we did the Tikes of Aruba ( google it) and had a blast. Went all over the island and saw places the other ship excursions don't go to. Riding the trikes was a thrill and easy to learn, even if you have never ridden a motorcycle before. Hope you have a great cruise, Panama Canal should be a MUST for every traveller.

  19. Hi, was suggested to ask this question on the Princess Thread.

We are cruising with Princess to Alaska and want to book a salmon fishing excursion independently in Ketchikan. The ship fishing excursions say that the chefs on board will cook your catch for that evenings meal onboard, does anyone know if they will do this for fish caught on an independent tour or is it exclusive to those taking an excursion through Princess? Thanks in advance!

Best to check with Princess but, we heard from others on a previous cruise that they did, in fact, cook one of the salmon they had caught. Didn't ask if it was from an independent excursion or a Princess one though. When are you going to Alaska? We are taking the Golden on September 9th and I have an independent fishing tour scheduled in Ketchikan with Experience One. Check it out on google. bob

  20. We booked a balcony cabin on the Caribe deck for a Eastern Caribbean cruise next spring. I keep checking the site to see if the price has dropped, and I noticed that very few cabins are listed as sold on that deck, while the mid aft area on deck 11 and 12 are almost sold out. We chose the Caribe deck because of the larger decks on the Emerald, but I started to worry that I had missed something when I noticed the discrepency in sold rooms on that deck compared to 11 and 12. Any theories?

I can't think of any reason not to choose a cabin on Caribe deck. We had a mid cabin once and an aft corner last April on the Ruby. Decks are a bit larger on Caribe and usually book fairly fast. In fact when we were on the Ruby in April we tried booking the same cabin, C753, for the same cruise next March and it, along with most of the other cabins on Caribe, were already taken. We booked B749 which is similar to C753 and felt lucky to get it. Will be interested in hearing what others have to say.

  21. We had C753 in April to Hawaii, aft corner cabin, and it was wonderful. Never a noise from the crew stairway and since it is all the way aft we had a great view of the wake from the ship. Tried booking it again for next March, another 15 day Hawaiian, while still on the cruise and it was already taken. We were able to book B749 which is just above it so we were very fortunate. Love the aft corner cabins and the decks are fully covered which we prefer. Hey, its a cruise, how bad can any cabin be????

  22. FYI, the Internet Cafe managers don't work for Princess. I believe they work for the satellite communications company (MTN?)

Hmm, the one on our recent Hawaiian cruise worked for Princess and told us she had been with them for about six months. That being said, she was very rude to guests, and kept telling everyone the log on issues were due to ships location. Ok that's possible but, she was very rude. I called Princess when we returned and told them about her and they were going to pass the info on to whomever needed to hear it. As I said, she was employed by Princess and were very concerned about her attitude.

  23. Did the tour a few years ago and it was amazing. Tundra tour out of Denali was great, got to within about 35 miles of McKinley and it was totally void of any clouds. Guide said that rarely happens so we were fortunate. Also, ask the hotel clerk to give you a wake up call if the Northern Lights are out. We were called about 2:30 a.m. and got to watch them from the balcony just outside our room...gorgeous. Just a thought in case you didn't think of it.
