I don't use filters since I find they degrade the image. A good lens hood is the best protection IMHO.

So did I!! And also love the fact that I can carry multiple lenses with me. Which camera do you use?
I have a Panasonic G6 and an Olympus E-M10.
-
I thought I was only one that used M43 cameras. Love my lightweight cameras and lenses.

I was ready to buy the FZ1000, but the rumor phot sites say that Panasonic will be coming out with a new bridge camera (FZ300). I may wait to see the specs on the new model.
-
I went to Alaska last August and took my bridge camera (Panasonic FZ-200). Most of my long shots were taken at 400mm or longer. A smaller zoom would work with some heavy cropping.

I usually will bring both my M43 camera (Pana G6) with my 14-140 lens and my Canon G7x. Looking to get a Sony A6000, but the lack of prime lenses has me rethinking that purchase.
-
The A6000 with the two lens kit is $749 at Bestbuy or the A6000 with the kit lens for $599 (Amazon and BH Photo have it also on sale). Looks like they're clearing stock for the A6100.

Canon G7x and a Panasonic mirrorless DMC-G6. Lenses Panasonic 14-42 and a Panasonic 45-175.
-
The FZ200 is on sale at Amazon for $399. Not as good as the Black Friday $299 deal, but cheaper than what it normally goes for.
-
Thinking getting this camera but that FZ1000 with the one inch sensor. Decisions, decisions.

Finally figured it out with Photobucket. Picture taken in Alaska August 2014. Mt. McKinley in the background.

Thanks for the tips and replies. I'm thinking getting a Canon 70D since the SL1 is probably too small for a large zoom lens. I also plan to look into renting a super zoom.

I'm typically a DSLR user and currently have a Canon SL1 with a kit lens (18-55) and also have the 55-250 telephone zoom lens. Just wondering if this is overkill for my Alaska cruise (and too much to bring on a long trip). I'm thinking about a bridge camera (such as a Sony HX-400B). Just curious what other novice photographers think about bringing a bridge camera over a DSLR.

The 12-40 lens should be fine landscapes. For wildlife, I would get the Olympus 75-300. That would give you a 150-600 focal length. IBIS can be an issue at long focal lengths. Alternatively you could also try a Panasonic 100-300. The panasonics have OIS which can work on a Olympus body provided you disable IBIS in the menu.
