  1. I don't think anyone should make light of someone else's trauma. You do not know what people went through, sitting behind a keyboard bashing someone because they were scared makes you a bully. I've seen a lot of the videos and I would not want to get on that ship after seeing that. What about the mold that is now growing because there's no way that much water can be dried in a day. Heading into warmer climates where it will just multiply? What about all the vomiting that occurred? It's good to have an opinion, but to bash people because of what they (not you) went through is not classy. Imagine being on there with your kids and they're scared... are you going to bully them too! The world is becoming a scary place where everyone can sit anonymously behind a screen and say whatever they want. And now I'll wait for y'all to start bashing me. Whatever!

My husband and I were on the ship. I can attest to the panic level on the ship. We stayed up all night and could not sleep due the list of the ship. Going to bathroom in the middle of the night was a challenge. We literally had to crawl on own hands and feet to get into bed. We were on the 13th floor and could feel every wave rock the boat. I am seasoned traveler and have my own personal sea vessel and the swells of the seas were quite high. We dint have flooding in our room, but some in the suites did have their entire room flooded. The water came in through the seal of the balcony door. I have first hand account of this trip. I'm 50 yrs old and in great shape and had a hard time getting around and cannot imagine how people with canes/and or wheel chairs were able to use the facilities.

I saw people crying in the hallways - scared for themselves and their families.

Please DO NOT think for one minute this was a pleasure cruise because it was not. Unless you were on the ship please do not cast judgement on other's fear. It's rude and definitely uncalled for. I did see many people trying to help the elderly get around. I will say - the crew were very helpful, always with a smile on their faces and just like us...didn't sleep that first night. You can imagine how exhausted they were to turn around then work a 15 hour day with no sleep.

From now on....my husband and I will stick with a land vacation for a few years.

I hope the people that left on the 6th have a great vacation.

  2. Does anyone have a written confirmation on what compensation was offered for people due to sail on 11/11/2017 broken down NCL GEM ???

You can call NCL and they will tell you exactly what you will be compensated towards another cruise. We were supposed to be on this sailing and it cancelled 4 days before we were supposed to leave.

We have since rescheduled for a New Years cruise and applied those credit to our new cruise.

They will quote you a per person credit towards the new cruise.

  3. How. How on earth do they charge $1,500 on a UBP for a 1 week cruise? That's $214 a day and debarkation day hardly counts! The rep had to have been wrong.

That amount was correct. For a 7 day cruise for 2, the UBP package is $89/pp per day plus 18% gratuity., You do the math - it comes out to $1,500 on top of the cruise cost itself. They definitely should have transferred those perks over but this is not how it works. It's considered a new booking. If they transferred them over I would have booked for the breakaway for Sunday. Still pretty upset about missing a nice 10-day vacation.

  4. I wonder what they'll do for passengers cruising without a passport.

They may not be able to fly back without a passport. When you do your online booking, when you choose birth certificate another box pops up that states there would be a problem getting back into the US. Wwo, I am at a loss for words....(rarely happens)!

  5. Captain just announced that the Gem will not be returning to NYC on the current cruise due to engine troubles. Passengers will disembark in Barbados and take a chartered flight back to New York.

Has anyone had this experience and specifically how they might deal with passengers that can't or don't fly?

Are you kidding me. That's crazy. Do you know how many people they would need to get on flights. Never heard of this in my life. I can particular say that I am not a good flyer hence the reason we often cruise from a port that is manageable by driving. I wish everyone a safe ride/flight back. At least you were able to enjoy some of your cruise.

  6. On Gem right now.

    Nobody has told us anything.

The front desk are towing the official line that they know nothing.

Man, it was announced to everyone else hours ago.

Don't even know if they are planning to be in New York on Saturday as scheduled.

Keep up the great PR Norwegian.

    Pathetic

According to NCL they will be coming home slower than normal. Our original leave on Saturday went from 4pm to 6pm without notice.

  7. I'm sorry for you.

And PO'd. That was the part of the "offer" that ticked me off. IMHO, since NCL cancelled the cruise, they should guarantee your perks, not treat you as a new booking.

Yes, they are treating it as a new booking. I am pretty Tee'd. We have two other couples that were coming with us, Whahhh

  8. I'm on the BA this Sunday. This morning there were lots of cabins available; I just checked and it seems to be completely sold out.

I called NCL to rearrange to take the breakaway for this Sunday and the only thing they had was the gty balcony. You lose out of all the perks, like the UBP and specialty dining with the gty. The UBP is another $1,500 for the week plus gratuity at 18% and the special dining. May have to plan for a different week. This was my 50th birthday cruise. So I'm pretty bummed out.

  9. As said, you will be fine. After all, that piece of paper does not prove anything. Only their computers count.

Now, the real question is why folks wait until the last day to print them? There have been lots of folks that discovered problems with either the checkin info, or the reservation when they went to print. Much easier to clear up the week before.

Not slamming the OP - just warning others to make sure everything is okay.

Funny story....We leave Nov 11 out of NYC on the GEM. 2 weeks ago I started our online check in. Then forgot all about it. Went upstairs last week to grab our passports to finish the online book, only to discover my husbands expired on 4/2017. UGH...Long story short, we had to make an appt to go in person into Boston for an emergency passport renewal. DH went in on Tuesday and had his passport in our mailbox on Thursday. Needless to say, I will never wait this long to check in for a cruise I booked 6 mos ago. A lesson learned!!l

  10. We are going to St. Thomas on our nov 11 Gem sailing.

My husband and I are on the same cruise as you. I was shocked to see St. Thomas on the last leg of our trip but so happy. St. Thomas is a beautiful island and the people who live there very inviting. We got married there 10-yrs ago as we love the island. Anything I can do to help their economy, I will be there. I hope they don't change the itinerary but will understand if they need to. Looking forward to a great vacation.

  11. I was thinking maybe they will be disembarking later. I was going to get to pier at 10am but don’t want to sit around waiting to board

Were coming in from MA. Thought we could now take our time getting into the city but DH wants to leave early. If we board the same time, I will sit by and have a vacation drink.
