  1. Call me silly but this is very exciting!! I'm doing the breakaway first. Great ship. Fun ship. However I can't wait to get back on the gem in January!!!! I hope people on the first cruises after dry dock post pics!!

Thanks for those supplying the info!!

  2. Today The Gem heads to Freeport for dry dock. Can't wait to see her on the 13th!

Quick basic question........I see Gem just returned to NY, so it's heading to Freeport today? Empty? Or did they offer a one way cruise?

I, too, am excited to see how she changes!

  3. Hello All,

For those of you who have been on the Breakaway and more importantly attended any of the shows on board that are adult only...not recommended for small children please shed some light..

    1. Why specifically are there shows not suitable for all on board?

    2. Is there certain shows that use profane language?

    3. Is there an over abundance of female/ male nudity featured?

    4. Is there cuss words that are said?

    5. Is there suggestive dancing/ movements meant to titillate the crowd?

i keep hearing that kids should be kept away...but no one says why...i am starting to think that the people posting these warnings just want a "kid free" environment.

Please help me understand these adult shows..

    Best,

    Mark

At one showing, I saw families bringing their little kids and then walk out in disgust, shaking their heads. They didn't have a leg to stand on as there were numerous warnings/announcements that the show was adult focused. It's a personal choice, but I do not think it's appropriate for anyone under 13-14 or so. A few F bombs and the "sex in bathroom" inference is a bit much for a kid. Actually, I saw a few seniors walk out too due to the loud music. (I'm no prude/stick in the mud and enjoy a good raunchy joke, I am just wearing my parent hat)

The later comedy is adult focused as well and should be. Any one wanting a 1030pm kid free environment in a comedy club and a few adult laughs doesn't make them a big anti kid meanie! Empty Nesters should have the right to fun too! ;)

  4. The Gem is a fave of mine too! Going on her in January and I cannot wait! Glad you had a great cruise and thank you for head up about the menus. It shall be interesting!

Re smoking...I smoke...DH does not....i too am a very polite smoker. Never break the rules and try to be respectful of others. Even in casino, if person next to me isn't a smoker, I won't smoke....and that's rough...........a cocktail, a slot machine and cigarette...........(i know, i know, gross to many people!)

Anyway, sorry you had to deal w such accusations when simple questions and politeness could have resolved the issue. Sounds like you have a positive attitude and roll with it. My type of cruiser!!!

  5. No jewelry and no metal on your swim suits.

Kids also get turned away if they are not tall enough.

My DS was tall enough and weighed enough but he still had to be let out of hatch a few times before he decided getting stuck wasn't fun. If you don't have enough weight/momentum you cant get over the slow down hump at the end of the free fall slide. They have a hatch to let you out.

Exactly. No jewelry or metal. I didn't do since gravity wreaks havoc w a woman's bathing suit :D DH did it, took off watch (think he left wedding band on. Don't remember) and he had a head/neck ache for 15 minutes after we went down. It was quite a force. But nothing a cold beer and sitting in the sun didn't fix! :p

  6. I have cruised w Big Ken, Dan Dan and Julie. I have actually cruised several times w Julie as the CD. I actually get a kick out of her joie de vivre approach. It cannot be easy dealing w 1000s of people, most who only open their mouths to eat and moan!

The little girls on the ship also LOVED her and it was endearing to see them "look up" to her.

If NCL is reading, Julie is great.

    Oh and

  7. I remember skeet shooting on Homes lines and Chandris cruise line. Back in the late 1970's early eighties I was on a get a way girls cruise with a friend of mine. Back then it was mostly men who did the skeet shooting. The staff really did not want her to shoot. But my friend who was a police officer knew how to shoot. But she did not tell them that she was a officer. They let her shoot after taking lots of time to show her. Then she shot, she hit every clay pigeon in to pieces. The look on the staff faces was priceless!.

That's hilarious!! Love it. Someone else mentioned the Seinfeld episode of golfing episode..:D "I always wanted to pretend to be marine biologist"

  8. I have done the 9 day and the 12 day. (Booked for the 10 day this Jan) On average you will be warm by 2nd day and with a little luck on first sea day, you're taking a brisk walk on deck while wearing jeans/work out pants and a light jacket/sweatshirt. On 1st day the hot tubs are in use! The exciting thing about the trip down is feeling it become warmer-the excitement of blue water and sandy beaches!

They are both lovely cruises and as exciting as the Breakaway is, the Gem is something special.

    :)
