  1. Are they? I have read conflicting reports but believe they generally self-insure for losses through liability under a certain very high threshold.

Fair enough, they may well self-insure. I wouldn't want to deal with the cruise line directly for a claim like this either, without an attorney. You're still dealing with actuaries whose job it is to pay out as little as possible. Add in the double much larger factor of the parents being unable to make a logical decision in this situation because of the loss of their child, and they'd be crazy to not seek an attorney.

  2. My thing is I just don’t want to fly out and be stuck in a hurricane in New Orleans. I remember Katrina, not saying Nate will be anywhere as bad. But still. I got this from messaging them on Facebook:

“Good Morning Nathan. We have been keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Nate, which is forecasted to be heading in the general direction of the Louisiana area by this Saturday or Sunday. Since these storms can be so unpredictable, we will continue to monitor the weather reports and, once we have more information on its forecasted path, we will provide you with another update.

To stay updated, please sign up for text alerts by texting CCL2 to CRUISE (278473).

    - Shane”

As you noted, Nate is not Katrina. Not by a long shot. I wouldn't sweat it. If the airlines are flying, you shouldn't fear going. Now if you don't want to deal with a shortened cruise, then you might not want to go.

  3. Fttf also comes in handy when you have to see Guest Services. You often don't plan on seeing them but then need to see them for some odd reason. We had to see guest services to address some excursions last year and we're very thankful that we had fttf as the regular Guest Services line was very long.

As a Platinum cruiser, I always enjoy the stink-eye when I cut to the front to see guest services. :D

  4. Use this info how you will, but the last time we purchased FTTF we didn't realize that our Platinum benefits would kick in for that particular cruise. Once I realized we'd get Platinum benefits I canceled FTTF, but they still gave us the FTTF stickers and had our S&S cards were separated out with the FTTF group. In our case it didn't matter because FTTF benefits are just a subset of Platinum benefits, but I don't know if they've fixed that system or not.

  5. I am feeling a sense of deja vu. Our cruise on the Norwegian Escape was 2 weeks after Irma and our cruise got re-routed to the Western Caribbean. We are booked on the Carnival Fantasy in 2 weeks out of Mobile to the Western Caribbean and now Nate is predicted to go right over the islands we are supposed to go....again. What are the odds???

You should be fine. It's grazing Nicaragua and the Yucatan. There's dangerous flooding in Central America but the Yucatan will be fine as will the islands. It will be long gone and on the Gulf Coast early Sunday morning. Once it turns north Nate will be blasting forward like a freight train. At any rate, Nate is not Irma.

  6. First of all, try to limit your carry-on to as little as possible; I've never understood why people are loaded down with enough luggage to warrant renting a mule. At worst, you'll be in your cabin with luggage delivered a few hours. We bring prescriptions, iPad, and boarding papers. And go straight to the burger bar, snag a drink if the day, breathe a great sigh of contentment, and switch to cruise mode. Boarding as early as possible let's you switch gears and enjoy the boat.

In addition to electronics, it's good to bring swimsuits and our bottles of wine. We always each (me, my wife, and our 2 kids) carry a backpack aboard.

Actually the last two cruises we just carried everything aboard, since our cabins are available at boarding. We pack light (a carry-on-sized rollaboard and a backpack each) so it's not that big of a deal.

  7. Congrats on being "famous" by getting picked by John heald for his facebook feed. :D

To answer your question, we enjoy being on the ship. We are platinum, so we can go to our stateroom and drop our stuff right away. We like to get lunch before it gets crazy crowded, explore the ship, get some time in the pool while it's uncrowded, and maybe take a nap. I also have a drink in hand the moment we board. :)

You don't have to board early, so I'm not sure why it's a concern for you. You can board an hour before departure if you want.

  8. Citi Double Cash card is our every day card. No annual fee and an effective 2% cash back on all purchases, 1% when you make a purchase and 1% when you pay the bill, which is exactly the same as 2% if you pay your bill in full every month as you should.

In addition we play the credit card rewards bonus game signing up for new cars to get the large sign up bonuses.

  9. MSC lured us over with the status match. So far I'm not impressed with the website or their knowledge of their own ship, to say the least. I hope the onboard experience is smoother.

Could the cabin trouble be due to your getting an actual 2-bedroom Grand Suite and they feel they undercharged for those? Not that that excuses what has happened, but maybe they're trying to pull a fast one. I booked what I hoped was a 2-bedroom for our cruise next June, but it's a one-bedroom. By the time I booked I had assumed that would be the case, but I wonder if we'd snagged a 2 bedroom if we'd have the same trouble...

Good luck getting your cabin back!

  10. They look great.... except for that tiger-skin carpet! Yowsa! That's pretty hideous! It's a shame, since the rest of the ship looks so nice.

I bet it will look good once it's all furnished. Then again, I've always been partial to the, er, "loud" design on Carnival's ships.
