  1. I booked our June 2019 Alaska cruise six months ago in a DV6. They had just come out and the lower cost verandas were already saying sold out or waitlisted. They also said that because this itinerary is so popular they want FULL payment by THIS December (18 months before sailing). This may well be a common practice for Viking, I'm just not a fan of them keeping that much money for that long. That being said, we're still very excited about our first Viking experience.

  2. Thank you for your consideration, seems to be a rarity. Living among many retirees in Fla (myself included) there are quite a few with a sense of entitlement. They block store aisles, run into people, expect immediate and constant attention and it all seems to be okay just because they are in a scooter. One man even wheels himself and his TWO dogs around in the grocery. I am as empathetic as the next person but a little consideration on both sides goes a long way.

  3. On our last cruise it was difficult to get in the dining room each night because it looked like a parking lot for scooters in the foyer. It was also difficult getting an elevator that wasn't crowded with scooters. I understand they have every right to cruise but I also have a right to enjoy my cruise without having my feet run over, waiting for accessible elevators, etc. There are many other cruise line choices they can make.

  4. And sometimes you don't have a choice. We are going from Florida to Vancouver so thought we should go a day early and pay the deviation fee. When I questioned my TA about trying to fly in on departure day she told me that Viking would likely make us go the day before anyway and pay the fee regardless. I know we are responsible for hotel but does Viking offer transfer to the port on embarkation day?

  5. Final payment for July 2019 cruise due January 2019, so also 6 months. I think Regent was about 4 months? I know I booked it so late, full payment was like a week later.

We're doing June 2019 cruise and have been told twice that final payment is December of THIS year. Hadn't thought of asking for an extension, 18 months is a long way off.

  6. If you depart from Vancouver, when you arrive in Seward you will have an entire day to explore that port then spend the night on the ship and disembark the next day. If you depart from Seward (via Anchorage) it looks like you just spend the night on the ship before sailing the next day. I agree with you, it appears confusing. Let us know what Viking says.

  7. Flight delays can and do happen all the time. Don't want to take that chance. As I understand it, Viking flies you in the day of your cruise. The 1st day of your itinerary would be embarkation day, not the night before, the previous passengers are still on. For us coming from Fla. it's just easier out of Vancouver. Likely not so for everyone.

  8. I suppose that's if you're going the day before. It stays overnight on our RETURN trip so that doesn't help me for embarkation. Its still going to depart at the stated time on the stated day whether I made it there or not. If I've had travel delays on the way to Seward on the day of sailing it won't matter to me whether it was there the previous night or not. Think about it.

  9. Yes, you will have that bus ride regardless but in our case, coming from Fla., I did not want to be flying for many hours, with possible delays, and then having to spend another 3 hours on a bus, hoping we made it in time. On the way home there will not be that sense of urgency, just a little peace of mind for me. To answer the question about cabin choice, you are mostly cruising the Inside Passage and have amazing views no matter what side you're on, it's all good!

  10. We booked for June 2019 and had no hesitation at all. We are doing Vancouver to Seward which I think may be easier. TA told me it was a 3 hour bus ride from Seward to Anchorage to fly home, using Viking Air.

  11. I would guess that if the cruise line allowed her to bring the dog on the ship, then she must have been able to "prove" that it was her "therapy" dog, right? Am I wrong?

You missed the point! First of all the cruise lines are scared to death to confront any of those people, and they know it and take advantage. Do you know how many websites will issue fake certificates? I'm sure there are many legit pets out there but my MAIN point was the fact she had it in her lap and was feeding it from the table. Just wrong.

  12. After reading all this, I am thinking of cancelling my 2019 cruise to Alaska. I was planning on taking my neice, who will only be 21. I will be 51. We just did a Carribean cruise with Regent, and that was our main complaint. Well, that and the few snobs we encountered!

Don't even think about canceling your cruise. We are also doing Alaska in 2019 and I don't let a few outspoken people ruin any of my fun. I don't wear jeans but certainly don't care if someone does, if I even notice at all. I'm too busy enjoying myself to worry about what other people are wearing (wish everyone could be like that). Go have a great cruise, do what you want, and remember, their opinions don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

  13. We had a friend refer us to their agent. She has helped them for years. We are on East coast and she is West coast of Fla. Extremely easy to get in touch with, both by phone and email. She takes care of everything for us, even finding specials and OBC. Check with friends for recommendations.

  14. Thank you for such a concise explanation. The only ship "rule" I'm aware of is the animal can never be left alone in the cabin. I also thought true service dogs had to have some sort of identifiable tag or vest. I doubt the cruise lines will enforce much though, just like the rest of the service industry that doesn't want that confrontation.

  15. Such a sad situation at FLL. So many people trying to find ways to move on with their travel plans. Watching a local news station and reporter told account of a family being told by Uber driver their fare would be $300 for a short distance. Price gouging during such a tragedy is disgusting. Hope he gets reported.

  16. Went in mid-July a few years ago and temp never got over 60-65 degrees. Didn't care though, I was in ALASKA! Helicopter to glacier in Juneau got cancelled due to weather so went on whale watch. Best excursion I've ever been on. Definitely do a balcony. Gorgeous views through the Inside Passage. We had an ocean view (porthole) and it got tiring running up to a deck all the time. Still trying to talk DH into going back (went with my sister the first time). Enjoy your trip and Happy Retirement!
