  1. I'm not sure about that. As recent as a couple of years ago, I was able to fly on United for $240+ from Newark to FLL. When we traveled on Easter '16 on Delta out of LG to FLL we paid less than $250. First class that my daughter & SIL paid $450 for a first class. When I priced this time around --it was price shock. In future booking(s) will first look to sail out of Bayonne.

same with DR - went several years ago, paid 350 a ticket. Cant find a ticket under 800 now. consolidation of carriers and routes

  2. We are cruising out of Miami in Dec. I checked flights from Detroit and it will be cheaper to drive and that's with gas and lodging for 2 nights. The only thing we will lose is time.

This air fare pricing is getting out of hand, with consolidating of airlines they all fly nearly full planes so why should they lower prices. Maybe the Congress should look at this problem (Yea sure).

    J.

tough to drive to San Juan ;p

  3. Also check flight separately, one way there and maybe a different airline on the way home.

    This sometimes pays off.

I paid 780.00 for our flights next April

Flying down on AA out of Montreal and back on Air Transat. Not cheap but cheaper than round trip.

Good Luck (If you are like me, you just want it booked and done)

    Enjoy your cruise!

We did that this year - flew down delta and back American - looking at all options

  4. Yeah, thanks. Checking Spirit and Frontier (shudders) but still high, and with multiple stops (I know, I'm a princess). I check almost every day but because its spring break and Easter (the first Sunday) I am not optimistic that it will get better. Even thought about finding a RT to Florida then puddle jumper to PR, but that weeks just kills. I dont have much flexibility in dates because of kids' school schedule - could go out Thursday night and come back Sunday, but I dont find its really helping. Delta has cheaper am flights on Saturday returning, but not late enough for me to comfortably book leaving the ship (I want 11 am as the earliest - I dont need the stress of timely docking, customs, etc., after a nice relaxing vacation week).

I will keep checking - can cancel until like December - who knows, might win the powerball this week, upgrade to a GS and charter my own plane (who am i kidding, if I hit for 650 MM, goodbye RCL!)

  5. We are booked on the AOS leaving San Juan 3/31 to 4/7. We were on AOS in 2015, and are looking forward to this different itinerary (ABC's plus St. Martin). However, I've been checking airfares since I booked in May 2017, before flights were even available, and you have got to be kidding me with the prices from NYC to SJ. I can't get a flight under $650 (and I need 4). Friggin Jet Blue is like 1500 per ticket! We've been to SJ many times in the past, and the average airfare was $350. I just can't justify spending 3k in airfare (yes, we have some miles, so one, maybe two of the flights would be free - the only up side to my wife's credit card spending habits) just to get to SJ.

I keep checking, and trying different options (Stewart, even Philly). Southwest's return date only extends to 4/6, and I need 4/7, so maybe that will work. Sigh...

  6. On the Jewel in April, friend we met wasnt allowed in the MDR on formal night without pants - they didnt specify the type of pants, but a no-go in shorts. Our drunken attempt to purchase him pants (any pants) on the way back to the ship in Barbados should have been on video...

  7. several years ago, my father in law attempted to take my family and my wife's two brother's families away for Thanksgiving. Pretty sure it was NCL out of NYC. About two days in, the propulsion was acting up. A big storm was heading up the East Coast and because of propulsion couldnt go around it or through it.

we stopped in Norfolk, supposedly for a few hours, to repair the problem. We were watching on CNN as they said "they are closing the storm gates in Norfolk Harbor" as we watched them do it. Two days later, we limped back to NYC, never making it farther south than Norfolk.

They refunded the cruise price plus gave something off a next - we hadnt paid (my father in law jumped for joy) but for us it was being cooped up in the room with two small kids, no good weather, couldnt use the pools, casino never opened, etc, and the loss of a vacation week (we did a quick make up trip to Cancun in December).

I am pretty sure NCL removed the NYC-Norfolk cruise from its itineray therafter.

  8. we stay at the embassy suites - four of us, so get the two doubles with sleep sofa so kids dont have to share a bed. free cooked to order breakfast and free drinks and snacks at happy hour - also about a two block walk to beach, with free chairs, umbrellas and towels - also really nice pool at the hotel with outdoor food and bar. Five minutes from airport (and grocery store next door to get wine for cruise) and ten to 15 minutes from pier.

  9. I regularly would order multiple apps and entrees. In fact, on the Jewel most recently, the scallop appetizer was so good I asked for a bowl of scallops without the rest of the stuff that accompanied it. They were happy to oblige.

On one occasion, after I finished ordering, our waiter said "that's not going to be enough for you, what else do you want" - which is why, even with MTD, I like the same time and table so we get the same waiter!

  10. We've done B (with substitutions one year for St. Kitts and the other for St. Croix) twice. My family didnt want to do it again, so we are doing A next spring. With the exception of St. Thomas, i liked all the B islands. We havent done the ABC's yet, and liked St. Maartan. I am not a sea day fan, however, and A has two.

  11. despite notices that you can stay in your room until __ oclock, they start banging on your door much earlier than that - 1) steward - oh, just checking to see that you are here; 2) mini-bar - just checking to see that you still have two water bottles, etc.

they want you out of the rooms asap and will make it as unpleasant as possible, in my recent experience coming off the Jewel.

  12. Had booked Fascination, family wasnt really into same itinerary again as 2015 and 2017 as we did on Adventure and Jewel, so cancelled ....

and just book Adventure of Sea, March 31, 2018, out of SJU, going to ABC (to which we've never been) and St. Maartan, which we loved last time. It has two days at sea, which I dont love, but that's the trade off for new ports.

Because it was more expensive, we booked connecting interior rooms (we always do connecting with the kids) instead of an oceanview, but got a promenade view for $150 more than the basic interior, so there's something to look at. Base price per room was just over $200 more than our oceanviews on the Jewel. Will keep checking for price changes or "sales."

other advantage was that booking deposit was only $100 per room - much better than the $500 per I put down on Fascination. So now, we await air fares and also decide on maybe London instead of a cruise....
