  1. Exactly, this calculation is on the 2nd page of the spreadsheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing Ship Name Ship Passenger Capacity # of open access designated smoking areas # of smokers per designated smoking area (CDC estimate) Bliss 4004 1 601 Breakaway 3963 2 298 Dawn 2340 3 117 Encore 3998 1 600 Epic 4100 3 205 Escape 4266 2 320 Gem 2394 3 120 Getaway 3963 2 298 Jade 2402 3 121 Jewel 2376 3 119 Joy 3883 1 545 Pearl 2394 3 120 Pride of America 2186 2 164 Sky 2004 2 151 Spirit 2018 3 101 Star 2348 2 177 Sun 1936 3 97 NCL Smoking Policy https://www.ncl.com/cruise-faq/smoking https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2018/p0118-smoking-rates-declining.html
  2. Thank you for this information. I have put it in the spreadsheet as tentative
  3. True, Carnival does have ships sailing out of NY/NJ seasonally but there isn't one that is homeported in NY/NJ year round like RCCL & NCL. I like the 14 or more day cruises out of NY after the holidays (during the coldest months of the year) to warm weather RCCL always seems to offer fewer days on their cruises compared to NCL's to the same destinations, so I have pretty much ruled them out, even if they were better at providing accommodations for smokers. Maybe if other cruiselines see the popularity of these cruise, some will jump on board to compete with equal or better offerings? Otherwise, I may have to start putting my vacation money into land vacations instead, lol.
  4. As the author of the spreadsheet, I know that I have sent it to the executive level guest relations person at least five times, maybe more. I donโ€™t know if anyone else has done the same.
  5. I wish Carnival had a ship home ported in NY/NJ since that is where I always cruise from. I would change cruise lines in a heartbeat if that were the case, even though I am only 2 cruises away from Platinum Plus on NCL. I have obviously been pretty loyal but I am thinking it is time to change my loyalties, lol.
  6. Thanks for the comments! The lack of communication compared to Carnival is why I started the spreadsheet, lol. And yes, it appears that Carnival has a much better grasp of policy, i.e. the company's laws, along with understanding the need to be current and detailed in expections if they want compliance. NCL has a laissez-faire attitude regarding policy, probably because they have the wrong person in charge of it and accept internal non-compliance and/or interpretation of written policy. It is a shame that they expect their customers to comply with something they are so unwilling to put sufficient effort into communicating. Just speaking as someone that served on a company policy committee for over a decade and chaired it for 4 years, lol. It is kind of my thing ;-)
  7. Thank you for your comment. I totally agree with you that intolerance is insidious. It seems like we are seeing it more and more. I just read an article about an HOA preventing a veteran from flying a flag outside his home. Really?? I don't understand how we became a society of pick & choose what you tolerate/accommodate.
  8. Finally!!! Thanks so much for this information on the Joy. I have added your information to the spreadsheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing Do you happen to know if the Haven had a designated smoking area similar to the other Breakaway/Breakaway Plus category ships?
  9. Funny because I was told nothing in the oceanview category could be upgraded to an aft balcony. I was told I would get a BA - midship balcony from the O1.
  10. My experience today . . . I have booked 3 cruises (2 on the Breakaway & 1 on the Bliss) in a Family Balcony and have been able to use 10,000 points to upgrade into an Aft Facing Balcony. Today I called the Worldpoints Dept just to verify it was the same on the Getaway prior to booking. I am being told that even if I booked a large balcony or spa balcony and used my Worldpoints, I would get a midship -BA- balcony (i.e. a downgrade for my points)???? What is that all about? The last cruise that I booked was about 14 months ago which I will be taking in January. Has the Worldpoints program made major changes with the end result being the points are worthless?
  11. Thanks for the update on the Dawn! Still looking for information on Joy โ• ??? Unofficial NCL Designated Smoking Areas
  12. Does anyone have information for Joy designated smoking areas? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing
  13. Carnival does have smoking areas and regularly updated policy listed on their website. I think it is just laziness (or deception? ๐Ÿค”) in communicating to guests on NCL.
  14. Thank you for the updated information . . . very much appreciated!! I have updated information on the Star: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing
  15. Thank you for this information! I have adjusted the information on the Humidor for the Breakaway: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing
  16. So happy that both smokers and non-smokers are finding the spreadsheet helpful!!! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Excluding those that are just intolerant of different lifestyles or expect others to conform to their needs, I think most of us just need information and transparency to set expectations and make decisions.
  17. I think it is more important to know the exact category if you are working with a travel agent. My experience . . . knowing that I wanted to be in a B1 using 10,000 points, I had booked a B2 on my travel agents advice because the B2 & B3 were the same price at the time. When I called the Worldpoints desk, they told me I had to go back to the travel agent to change my reservation to a B3 before they could help me. Apparently upgrading from a B2 couldn't be done nor can the Worldpoints desk make any changes to a reservation from a travel agent. So yes, in my case, I need to know the exact category to book because travel agents don't have inside information on the Worldpoints program. Unless of course, I want to create additional work & wasted time on the phone for myself and my travel agent.
  18. Actually, a policy is not subject to weekly change. It is subject to an adoption procedure...just speaking as someone that was on a policy committee for 15 years and chaired the committee for 4 years.
  19. Just wanted everyone to see NCL's published policy as of today (3/11/19) which you can print and take on your cruise for clarification. I would be interested to know how ship personnel are responding on the Getaway, Breakaway and other ships with a Waterfront area given the reported discrepancies between policy and practice. https://www.ncl.com/faq/guest-conduct-policy SMOKINGAs the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. For more information on our smoking policy please click here. https://www.ncl.com/cruise-faq/smoking As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks. Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location. Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 USD cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages. Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.
  20. Thank you for the update! Spreadsheet updated with this information. According to crowd-sourcing Bliss only has 1 unrestricted designated smoking area (H2O) with a ratio to smoking area of 600+/- smokers. This should be a warning for anyone with significant issues with smoke to not enter H2O on the Bliss because the concentration of smokers in that area will be higher than most ships. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwhHuxFGVf8GRxIe1V30Bj0elmkPLRuQUxOpmI8LiFE/edit?usp=sharing
  21. If you can do a private company, I would go for that option. The NCL excursion (Rebel Yell, I think) really doesnโ€™t give you enough time since they take an early group then go back for the later group. When they arrive on Jost Van Dyke with the late group, the early group has to leave. The early group is returned to the ship and then the late group is picked up. I think it only works out to about 2-3 hours on Jost Van Dyke, not much of a beach day. You can check with Kuralu and Foxy along with Celtic.
  22. Wondering if anyone has figured out the category to book if you want to do the: https://www.ncl.com/world-points Up To 2-Category Upgrade On 5-Day Or Longer Cruise (Within The Same Category Meta) 10,000 to a B1 Aft Facing Balcony on the Encore. I have done this on the Breakaway from a B3 to a B1 On the Bliss I had to book a B8 category to upgrade to a B1 However, when I called the Worldpoints number to ask which category to book on the Encore, the rep I spoke to couldn't tell me the answer. Apparently it is not available in the system yet??? I'm thinking the Encore may be a B8 (like the Bliss) ?? I am just wondering if anyone has successfully upgraded to a B1 yet on this new ship. Also wondering if anyone has found a way to get to a B1 Aft Facing Balcony using any of the other rewards categories like: Up To 4-Category Upgrade On 5-Day Or Longer Cruise (Within The Same Category Meta) 20,000 or Inside To Oceanview Or Oceanview To Balcony Stateroom Upgrade On 5-Day Or Longer Cruise (Single Meta Upgrade) 30,000
