We returned from a Canada New England cruise one week ago on the Carribean Princess. We were very surprised to find that, on formal nights, we had to dress formally in the speciality restaurants!!! We have always dressed "smart casual".....we don't want to pack formal clothes and love dinning at the spec. rest. Is this rule going to be on all the princess ships??? We were very disapointed.
This is certainly not true on the Royal where even in the regular restaurants thay arn't pushing the dress code on formal nights. Just show up in better casual clothing (including short sleeve shirts without a jacket) and you'll be OK.

Another PLUS for Princess. :)Huh? I see it the other way.
Exactly. I also see it the other way. Since Princess doesn't advertise their dress code in the same fashion as of now, this change will eventually come back to reduce cruise sales & entice many people to switch cruise lines where they feel more comfortable.
Just take a look at what happened with the smoking regulations just a few short years ago. Almost all the cruise lines now have just about the same standards. It'll be just a matter of time till the mass market cruise lines all fall in place with the dress codes. :)

If Chic Nights,or something similar, ever comes to Princess I will continue to wear a Tux.....:):):)
Bob
I believe that to be your choice no matter what the dress code for the evening. :D

No one indicated that the dining room wasn't open on embarkation day on the Royal.
-
That is what the new code states. However, on the past 5 cruises we were on in the past year, RCI, Celebrity and Princess we saw people completely wearing what they wanted regardless of what the code stated. Yes, on Formal nights they were more casual than anything else. No one stopped them, Celebrity says they would issue jackets to men who did not have them (never saw that happen) and many people will state as they have done so in the past 'those are only suggested dress not something that must be followed. Saw Princess people in MDR on Formal night in short sleeve shirts. Didn't look to see if they wore paints. LOL
Does it matter to us, NO, we dress formal and YES we can get those clothes into 2 suitcases.
I personally believe that Princess will change, too. Going on Celebrity and Princess in Nov and Dec 2015. We will enjoy whatever night dress they call it.
Quite true. I noticed the same thing the other night on the Royal. Normally I only wear a long sleeve shirt but saw a few with short sleeves without a jacket. I will add that most guys were dressed with at least a jacket but it wasn't a real requirement by any means.
If Princess doesn't change to accommodate the what a good number of the people want they'll be losing business to other cruise lines.
Maybe it's a sign of changes to come very shortly.

Do they actually record each cabin number that brings on the bottles of wine at embarkation? I haven't noticed them checking my cabin number.

Never Never Never...be the last person to clear customs...Customs have a field day with you.
I agree with that statement. It's good to be amoung the last you but never want the be the last in line especially if they're running ahead of schedule.
They just might go over your stuff with a fine tooth comb and even if you have nothing to hide it the inconvenience of having your luggage ripped apart that would bother me.
-
I haven't had a problem not wearing a jacket in 12 or more years.
Most guys do wear one but they don't absolutly require it.
Even a short sleeve shirt without a jacket will suffice on the Royal.

And these balconies are ... Bigger ???? [emoji51]. Brings a whole new aspect to the Princess 'shelf'. Doubt we will be doing any sunbathing hardly room to stretch legs, although have noted the footstools.

Funny thing is that not all rooms have the footstool.

Just be-where of the up sell where they assign the cabin.
-
Depends where you are going. I sometimes will bring an extra 12 aboard in my backpack, say in Vancouver where there are drugstores three or four blocks from the port. I've never known security to turn a hair. I expect they are looking for glass.
I has a variety or items in Ft Lauderdale this cruise & they didn't cause any concern. Plastic bottles filled & empty + cans and full wine bottles, etc. They simply didn't generate enough interest to have them check it any further.
-
I guess they're OK as long as you know which cabin they'll assign you to.

I've been on two Princess Cruises where a couple ahead of us and two behind us had roll carts with several cases of water and soda. All went thru with no issues. Limes, I would pack in checked baggage along with the Gin and Vodka in the Speak Easy plastic bags (Smuggler brand of your choice).
That works some times but you can't always count on it.

Last year we were told that they raised their prices "during the holidays". The December 6 sailing I quoted prices on falls during that time. But I get the same prices when trying to reserve for our February 6 sailing, which I don't consider to be a holiday of any kind. It is a shame, as we always enjoyed parking there. We were lucky enough to pick up our car very early in the morning once, after disembarking the Oasis or Allure, and got there early enough to see 6-8 small monkeys eating their breakfast bananas in the parking lot :D. Apparently the Park n Go employees feed the monkeys.
Edited to add: Some of the monkeys were eating bananas while sitting on the hood of a car, but it was parked to the side and I think it belonged to one of the employees.
They told me that they vary their prices depending on how popular the particular time of season. I checked various dates & could hardly find one that still had the $8 rate.
I'm supposing that if there are no ships in port during they might consider lowering their rate to $8 once again.:D
-
True. Park 'n Go has increased their prices (who hasn't including Princess?) However, we feel the increase is still worth the service and not having to man handle our luggage. In October we pre-paid $7.99, vs. $10.20 pre-paid today. Plus we got two free bottles of water. Nice gesture on their part.
They new also charge depending on the holiday. Example for on thanksgiving my frend paid $12 per day.
It's not the bargain that it used to be. :(

We were just on the Royal Princess and a man was turned away from the dining room for wearing shorts. He changed to long pants and got in!
Those shorts will do it all the time. Any other clothing is OK.

I would just add this...when the people on the SeaWalk are looking down, they're really looking at the ocean below. They probably don't care about people on their balconies, which are not at all interesting, rather they want that kinda scary view of the ocean beneath them.
That all depends on who is sunbathing at the time. :D

The Samsung sets on the Royal won't respond to a signal into the HDMI input.
I believe the Regal is similar.
I've tried every possible combination without any luck although I have hear that some people in the past have had some success in utilizing the ships input- I haven't. :(
-
I'm currently on the Royal. They have Viewsonic's in some cabins & Samsung in ours. I tried feeding a signal for my own movies using a Cat 5 cable in to their input and also an HDMI signal into the other input & couldn't get the TV to respond in either situation. I have heard from some of the crew that some of the Samsung sets have an input button on the side but the one in my cabin doesn't. Also once they switch it off to utilize the HDMI input they have to call the tech to resend a signal to the TV to get normal service restored.
-
We were offered an upgrade & didn't even consider it for fear of getting stuck in one of those cabins. Right now on the Royal I think most of the cabins directly below the walkway are vacant. At least I've never seen anyone in there cabins or using the balconies. It's like being in a goldfish bowl. :)

We skipped it last night as nothing looked to exciting but the buffet wasn't great either.
We talked to others that did think it was an OK meal so maybe we'll try it next cruise.

Hi Ametrinel, I just got off the Ruby ship. My advise is to just pack lite. You can just pack a nice dress for dressy night that can be used for both nights.
It is now up to people to decide how you want to dress on the Ruby. Just dress in simple clothes and you will be allowed into the restaurant.
I looked at the old senior men and some were dressed in kaki pants and a simple shirt with no tie or jacket. Some women like to dress as they please.
I do the same and I would get real angry if anybody rejected me for just wearing a simple outfit for formal night. I don't wear formal gowns or dresses.
I just dress in simple clothes for formal night. I even go to the Captain's party dressed in a simple outfit. I am an elite VIP member who has cruised 43 times on the Ruby.
The Ruby is going to be refurbished on the first week of December and it is going to look and feel like a brand new ship. Have lots of fun.
My advise is to pack lite and pack layers of clothes as the weather can change in Alaska from cold to hot. The Ruby can be air-conditioned in some areas or kept warm in some areas. Have a blast!
These are our observations as well.

Atrium seems garish to us.
And very loud almost all times of day. It became impossible to order coffee except for early morning with all the noise. It was even difficult to talk to the Capt circle host on the 7th deck during the day without shouting. :(
Purchasing a camera on board...

They always seem to have models of cameras that are different than the ones I see at home which makes comparing prices difficult.
