  1. We found the two restaurants were rarely full even though they turned away Rez requests. On the next to last night we had made a same day Rez for 4 in chefs table. During our time there the restaurant was half full

The mgr said many people no showed due to lobster Thermidor on the menu in the mdr

We found food and service in manfredis to be not as good as everywhere else on the ship.

  2. We booked 3 tours through viator plus private water taxi from cruise terminal to hotel. All went off without a hitch. We did try to change one booking direct and found them to be rude and unhelpful. The tour guides were good to outstanding. I'd book with them again as better pricing had we gone directly. One tour turned out to be private which was an unexpected benefit.

  3. We've been on two river cruises and doing 1st ocean in 3 weeks and received the same email. Let's see if we get champagne and chocolate! Much prefer a bigger discount for repeat customers!

  4. We've been on 2 Viking river cruises. At the reception there were people with over 5. No difference that I could see. We became friends with a couple that had done 5. Same offers as we get.

  5. We have purchased it but on river cruises and intend to do so again here. The included wines have been very limited and probably no different on ocean. Neither if us drink beer. In the evening we like after dinner drinks and if you're on the ship after dinner each night we found the package was well worth it. We don't have any sea days but will have an afternoon or two to relax on board.

  6. We went on our 2nd river cruise last year so yes that qualifies you. There were personal invitations in our cabin for it and personal phone calls from the concierge to invite us. About 6 couples showed up and the senior crew and director. Maybe not such a big deal on ocean.

  7. Heres the full text from the webiste as of today:

    What is the dress code?

During the day on board and ashore, dress is casual including shorts, jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. Swimsuits, brief shorts, cover-ups and exercise attire should be reserved for the pool and Sports Deck. For evenings, while there are no “formal nights,” the recommended dress is elegant casual for most restaurants, performances or other special events. Suggested attire for ladies includes a dress, or a sweater or blouse worn with a skirt or slacks; for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional, but not required. Dinner in The Restaurant remains casual, with daytime dress deemed appropriate.

I wonder if its the same info in all countries?

  8. Most men wear s/s shirts or collared polo shirts, tailored long trousers in the mdr and ladies skirts or trousers with tops. But there are those who didn't bother to " dress for dinner" and turned up in "go-to-the-supermarket and mow-the-grass" clothes. Doesn't do a lot for the " ambience".

There's something on in the 500 (approx) seater very comfortable theatre at 9.15 each evening, an imported " star" or the Viking Singers and Dancers, each of whose shows are better than the previous one, which seems impossible! There is also the 70 seat Torshaven nightclub with a fantastic 4-ice band and two good singers, with huge repertoire for listening and dancing. Look forward to the evenings!

Do people dress differently for dinner at world cafe or chefs table or manfredis?

  9. Thanks for the review. I hope our cruise doesn't have too many people that don't get the casual dress code. My husband is not packing any ties and maybe one jacket. No cocktail dressy clothes for me either.

  10. We are 1k gold on united and get Econ plus automatically. Much better than economy. Even Econ plus can have bad seats so check seat guru for advice on specific airline and plane used for each segment.

  11. Be helpful to know what Viking has done to compensate people that booked travel on their own to Istanbul and decide to still go prior and fly to Athens on their own. Doesn't appear to be any consistency in their offers

  12. Hi Pukekolive-

Thanks so much for the details of your trip; cant wait for ours, reverse itinerary from yours in September. Especially appreciate the info on the private tours vs with Viking.

How far in advance did you book all of these.

So far we have booked our hotel AC Macka Marriott in Istanbul (we use points) and 1.5 days of private with Ephesus on 9/23-24 before we board the ship on 9/25.

We booked another Marriott post cruise for 3 days in Venice. Did you get private guides there as well?

Any tips on restaurants and things to do at night? We did get opera tickets for one evening in Venice already.
