  1. Well its countdown for our cruise leaving Aug 22 and I know it's early but I have been. Monitoring weather in a few cities.. I am hopeful that it won't be hot and humid..we usually travel in June or September to avoid the hot days in Europe.. it seems Europe has been rainy in 60 and 70's...Here's hoping it remains cool. Our last river cruise the second week in September was very cool and I was totally unprepared and had to buy a fleece jacket ...our cruise director told us remember dress like an onion.. (layers).... my pile of clothes is expanding not a good packer:D

  2. We are leaving August 22 Uniworld Amsterdam to Basel.. August wouldn't be my first choice for a river cruise in Europe but we received an exceptional deal with Uniworld. This will be our third trip with Uniworld.I have been checking temps daily and I also noticed weather seems cooler and rainy...Bring a rain jacket and I am also bringing a few long sleeve jerseys for day time touring. light golf shiirts to protect my Irish skin from the sun. Also spf hat... I also purchased a nice pashmina scarf wrap if it gets chilly on the deck..No need to bring shampoo, body lotions etc. Uniworld uses l'Occotane. Really top of the line very nice.. We have been to Amsterdam and love it. Uniworld has two museums and canal trip included before we sail.. have a great trip..

  3. We are leaving the end of August on a 13,day river cruise the longest we have ever cruised! I am a bit apprenshive hoping we will be compatible with our table mates.. Our last cruise we went with another couple so we didn't mingle. Sometimes we found people get miffed if you don't return to the same table....One couple avoided us the entire cruise after we stated we like to eat and meet others at dinner..Just remember there are topics to avoid which I constantly emphasize to hubby before going to dinner:D...We all know what they are!

  4. You will love this itinerary! We cruised on the Avalon Creativity two years ago our first cruise with Avalon. We are cruising on our third Uniworld next month and also worried that it will be too hot. This was a an unbelievable deal otherwise August wouldn't be our first choice..we stayed one night precruise in Paris. We cruised the first two weeks in September and the mornings were really chilly. The Normandy beach excurision was the highlight of our trip. So moving.. You will love Uniworld although we thought Avalon was awesome. Enjoy... any questions please feel free to ask..

  5. Taking my 5th river cruise next month and we do lots of walking. My husband is taking sacony athletic sneaker for walking. Wearing his dress shoes on the plane. My problems is so many shoes that I want to bring! My Skechers are very comfortable bringing black and beige shoes. Teva sandals, and a dressy sandal for evening. We might be taking a hike so considering an athletic sneaker with a strong comfort support...:p

  6. We have been on five river cruises so I will respond to my experience regarding the options of dining. Our last river cruise we were a group of four our best friends traveled with us for the first time. My friends didn't want to share a table with others.. I missed the opportunity to sit with new people but at breakfast we did try to sit with others..Once we did have the obnoxious person but the following night we just sat at another table.. I have noticed that after a few nights people have formed their group which is ok if you are all compatible...We like to move around and meet different people..Just my two cents...

  7. This will be our fifth trip to,Europe I will try and give you some advice. No American money. We will be on Uniworld so most everything is included. Make sure you contact your CC and give them a heads about your trip. Also I have Capital One and no transaction fees.. We usually take about 200 euros and I have about 20 euros in change from our last trips. we use for tips for cafe etc. We use our credit card and if we need additional euros there are ATM in most towns?.Left over euros we spend at airport on our return in duty free shops... Have a wonderful time...

  8. We received an upgrade on our upcoming cruise in August on Uniworld. We are Heritage Club members and it is a one catagory upgrade... Do they give upgrades if you are not members probably not!

  9. We will be cruising the end of August Uniworld River Queen 5th river cruise. Everyone always ask "which itinerary did you prefer".? Our first river cruise was AMA Danube itinerary. Loved it but we were disappointed with food and now cruise with Uniworld..I think my favorite was Burgundy and Provence and also second Castles on the Rhine. They were both SS ships on Uniworld. The SS Antoinette had a gorgeous indoor pool which we never had an opportunity to use.. too busy.. The cruise in August Rhine and Moselle is on an older ship and we aren't concerned we care more about the itinerary..

  10. If I remember cat 2 is large window. We had French balcony twice on cruises large window once and honestly There wasn't a big difference. We spend very little time in our cabin.. our friends had a suite with butler, balcony very nice but I certainly would never spend the money..

  11. We are cruising Uniworld River Queen in August third cruise with Uniworld. We are Heritage club members. We have been on SS Antoinette and SS Royale. First time on one of Uniworld's older ships but this was a deal and we wanted the itinerary. We booked cat 3 and just received an upgrade to cat 2. Larger window We paid extra $$$ for cat 3 should of booked aquarium!!! Oh well!! Happy with cabin...:D

  12. Notamermaid.... I enjoy your very informative posts. Watching closely the posts on Rhine water levels. We are cruising on the River Queen.... Uniworld leaving August 22 for 13 day Rhine and Moselle. We usually have cruised end of May and beginning of June but this was a special deal with Uniworld. My only concern in addition to water levels is the heat.. Hopefully it won't be too warm...we have cruised the Rhine a few years ago and look forward to cruising Moselle... any recommendations? Any must sees? Thx again for all your info...

  13. River cruising the end of August and this will be our 5th river cruise. Twelve days and I am already accumulating a few things to pack. I have taken a Bagalini purse but too many zipper compartments drove me crazy.. I am definitely an over packer but this trip I am trying to scale down the clothes. We purchased a Samsonite small carry on with wheels to store our meds, cosmetics, iPad and eliminate each of us having to carry a bag in addition to checked suitcases.. Trying to coordinate a color scheme and just interchange the clothes. Very casual ... Enjoy..:)

  14. Gorgeous pictures. River cruise Rhine and Moselle last week of August and hoping the weather won't be unbearably hot. Still haven't figured out how to post pictures on cruise critic forum. Will take pictures with my phone and IPad... any easy hints how to do it.?

  15. I would seriously consider an alternative to doing a river cruise. We are taking our fifth river cruise this August and I have my doubts. We are both in early 70's healthy and active but the traveling is exhausting. The airports alone are such a hassle.. We purchased an excellent travel insurance and we have been on trips where people had major medical issues... Being a daughter worrying the entire time about your mom would be a difficult for me.. Just my two cents!

  16. We are taking our third Uniworld cruise in August. We had no plans to take another cruise this year but a wonderful deal on a travel site last year was irresistible. My TA was able to book deal for us. We also received a great air fare from Uniworld. Bottom line there are better deals then booking on ship. This cruise is 13 days and almost half price but just two dates to choose from...So just wait Uniworld is always having a promotion..
