1. Max, congrats on taking your first cruise and your anniversary. I've cruised with Princess several times but not on the Emerald. That aside, I've enjoyed all my cruises with them.

From what I've read the judges didn't think he was a flight risk so he doesn't have restrictions whilst he goes through appeals. I imagine, as he had not leaving the country during the lead up to and the trial itself, he may still have that one.

To the best of my knowledge he has to pay for his legal bills. I expect he'll be back on the media circuit soon.

2. But there's also the chance that he could get more, on appeal.

John, as our legal rep, is what Cheng is saying a part of that "do-over" you mentioned earlier? I know in an appeal a sentence could be reduced or even see the guilty charge dropped but could it increase his sentence?

Do you think, just from your experience in court (allowing for this being another country) that the judges message was that he was not fully responsible, ie: taking into consideration the others that plea bargained and/or Costa management itself?

3. Heres the one from the BBC in Uk.

I did think he would worm his way out of it

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-31430998

32 lives lost and he got 16 years.

6 months per life. What happened to the 32 life sentences he should have got

The way the judges broke it down it's not even 6 months per life on the manslaughter charges.

"Prosecutors had sought a 26-year jail term but the court sentenced Schettino to 10 years for multiple manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck and one year for abandoning his passengers. "

Six of those years are for being an "able idiot."

As for the 32 yr life sentences my guess would be the prosecutors most have figured that would not work.

Cheng, yeah, he's worried about his dignity and being put through a media meat grinder. I just never see the compassion for those that died. He gives lip service to it, mostly for the little girl, but I just don't see compassion for those that have to deal with the disaster he set in motion.

4. Lots of little articles be released but still no breakdown as to how the judges came to their decision.

A couple of articles now say his sentence is 16 yrs and 1 month.

Wonder if that 1 month is for abandoning the ship?

Another article said he left before the verdict was announced.

At some point I guess all the facts related to the verdict will come out.

Reading through another I saw that one of his lawyers used this in his defense.

" Schettino's lead lawyer Domenico Pepe began closing arguments Monday, saying the champagne bottle used to christen the ship when it was put into service in 2006 did not break."

5. I hear he got 16 years!

Wow! Between the time I checked for results to making my post and checking again, all of about 5 minutes, the verdict came in.

When checking in the second time I found this link which is Schettino's final appeal to the judges this morning.

The video does have English translation.

6. Sidari, yet another article where it's more of the same from Schettino.

Chengkp, I believe now Schettino says that he knew the tides and current would get the ship closer to the island where he thought it would be safer to then start evacuations. In other words, when it was pointed out there was no power to do his magic steering of the ship closer to the island, he came up with another story.

Getting late in Italy. Thought we'd have the verdict by now.

7. Chengkp, the way I understand it is that Schettino chose not to plea bargain as the others did, including 1 from the Costa office. Schettino's ego leads him to believe he'll be found not guilty because of the incompetence of his staff and design faults of the ship.

According to this article if (when) Schettino is found guilty he will not go to jail immediately as Italian law allows 2 appeals.

8. SB, I couldn't get any sound on that, was there narrative? I did see one person circled, I'm assuming that was Schettino. My question still remains, what was he doing down on the promenade deck, when he should have still been on the bridge co-ordinating the emergency and the abandonment?

Chengkp, not sure who recorded the video but it had no sound.

Yes, the circle indicated the Captain. I'm not sure who recorded it but it did clearly show the Captain doing nothing.

If I recall correctly from early on, after the alarm was sounded the Captain didn't spend much more time on the bridge. I believe it was stated back then that he and the woman went back to his suite to retrieve some items which she carried off the ship.

9. After more than 3 years the remains of Russel Rebello are finally returning home. On Jan 25th his brother Kevin announced on Facebook that the Italian authorities have positively identified Russel and he would be released to his family for burial.

"Costa concordia: Today with the parlor funeral of milan it starts all the practices, procedures, support and advice for the Repatriation of mortal remains of my little brother Russel Rebello home in february. ( date of the funeral not defined yet ).

Costa concordia: Today along with the funeral director we begin the paper work, procedures to obtain the necessary documents for transport , assistance and consultancy. To repatriation of the remains of my brother russell rebello home in february. ( funeral dates not decided yet )."

Memory Eternal Russel

10. Three years have passed now.

Found a few links to share.

This one from a couple that survived:

This one doesn't have much of an article but does have a close up pix of Concordia.

This one just has some info about how people feel about cruising 3 yrs later.

11. One of the problems they face is the place used for the trial. It's not actually a courtroom, more of an auditorium as it's the only place large enough to handle the proceedings. That has caused some of the delays as the place had bookings during the time of the trial and those were honored.

I believe it is scheduled to return by mid month (this one. ) Should pick up with the Captain on the stand. I think they left off where he will be asked to explain his casual stance next to the lifeboat he fell, eerrr, tripped, uummm, was pushed into.

12. Sidari, welcome back.
I haven't seen anything about the next trial date but they sure left it hanging at a *dramatic* part of the case with the Captain having taken the stand. The next questions to be put to him will be about his casually standing next to the lifeboat.

I do not like that the 2 threads on this subject have been combined. The other was going down the page and should have just been left to fade away. This thread was of greater importance as it had so much to do with the raising of Concordia and all we learned from it.
13.
Naming the underwater platforms assuming they aren't removed, seems a little odd to me.

http://www.giglionews.it/2014/11/17/ipotesi-di-nomi-per-le-6-piattaforme/
I agree Ken. They haven't even decided if they will remain.
That said, I could think of a few names and none of them involve those that were on the Bridge.

Not really sure what else may have been in the article as my translator wouldn't translate.
14. Mike and especially Clive, since I read your posts I have taken some time to reply in an attempt to make myself clear. It was not "morbid curiosity" that led to my post. Had the question not been asked I would not have even put my thoughts out. It really comes down to what I have learned from this.

God forbid that such an accident ever happen again but we know they will with either ships or ferries. In this case for more than 2 1/2 years everyone believed that Russel was on or near deck 3 and concentrated on that area. This shows that in the final moment(s) things can change. Maybe the how or why Russel ended up on deck 8 is not important but what is important is that once righted a more thorough search could have been done had anyone thought he was elsewhere. That statement is not being said to be critical of those that searched as I believe they did a remarkable job, putting the hearts into it. It is, however, a lesson learned.

While I respect your opinions I really saw nothing wrong about my "speculation." I am sorry I was not clear in my original post with my thoughts.
