  1. How much do they cost over in NY? In Vermont they are $25 more than the regular license and are good for 4 years. That makes them a bit more than a passport card but we opted for the EDL because it's one less thing to carry around as we always have our licenses with us when we are out and about. We got the EDLs primarily for cruising because I found out how much it cost to replace DW's naturalization certificate if it got damaged or lost:o.

In Michigan it’s $20 more than the basic license. $45 for your first EDL, then $38 for a renewal. Our licenses are good for four years.

  2. Why would I "NEED" to get a Real ID comp;liant license seing I have a valid passport and passport card? I may choose to but I don't see that a Real ID compliant license is superior to a passport. for domestic flying. I'll decide if I even want it, if given t he option to get the usual style license like MA drivers currently have when I renew my DL

You will also need either your Real Id complaint license to enter any federally regulated buildings such as jails, court houses and nuclear power facilities. Yes, your passport and passport card can also function as valid ID for entrance to such facilities. However, a drivers license is typically more convenient to carry for most people.

  3. I am in MA and bec ause I renew my license this year, I have been reading MA drivers will be able to get EDL. Se eing I have Passport and card, I think I will simply reenew for a 'regular license. I won't be driving to C anada. I can't see I have any use for EDL. Thanks to those who helped explain.

I am amazedbut happy by the statisti c that r8% of MA residents have passport.

Massachusetts does not offer enhanced drivers licenses. When you go to renew your license next you will need to get a Real ID compliant license, which is marked with a gold star, if you wish to fly domestically.

My state has not yet issued EDL's (I think they will start soon?) .I have a valid passport and passport card but wonder if the passport card would be eligible to substtitue i in places at times an E DL is required?

    Thanks if anyone knows

A passport card is essentially an enhanced drivers license without being valid for driving. It is only valid for land and sea crossings into Canada, Bermuda, The Caribbean and Mexico. For any other countries, or if flying you will need your passport book.

  5. Just offering facts ---it was asked ---Do you live in a state that has implemented the "real ID" drivers license or also know as "enhanced"?

Real ID act compliant drivers licenses and enhanced drivers licenses are different. While it is true than EDL’s (enhanced drivers licenses) are Real ID licenses. Not all Real ID licenses are EDL’s.

EDL’s are only issued from five states: Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington. It allows travel to Canada, Bermuda, The Caribbean and Mexico by land or sea.

If you only possess a drivers license (whether Real ID or not) you must have either a passport, passport card, global entry card or a valid raised-seal birth certificate to partake in a closed-loop cruise.
