  1. "airplane mode" prevents your phone from trying to connect to cell tower which will rack up charges even if you're not using your phone. WiFi is an alternate way of connecting to a private network and would be used for the Hub app or using WhatsApp or other VOIP (voice over internet protocol). Personally I keep my phone on WiFi only as much as I can whether sailing or not.

About to show my lack of technical knowledge :) I think I need to take Phones and Internet on Board 101

You're supposed to keep your phone in Airplane Mode, correct? Can you have Wi-Fi turned on when in airplane mode?

If you purchase the ship's internet plan, do you still access Facebook Messenger from your phone, or do you need to log on from a computer?

  2. Term used to be " when my ship comes in" now it's called Surge Pricing...

They want $396 the night before my Vista cruise. I never saw Galveston hotels so high.

Beachcomber?? looks like a 2 story walk up, what am I missing is asking $399 nov 10th, the night Im going.

Im staying at what I consider a lesser hotel than Id ordinarily book, ... for over $100 a night.

The only hotel under $100 for my night was The Pearl which I also never heard of, and reviews are pretty terrible, two reports of bugs and bug bites. lol.

When did hotels get so expensive?? I went last year in December and I guess its off season vs November? Holiday Inn last Dec was only $100 a night.

  3. Awesome! Good location. Landry's (seafood) IHOP (breakfast) are close by. Check out a place call The Brick House Tavern which may be close in concept to that other venue you mentioned. Also a place called "The Spot". You're close to the convention center and San Luis Resort. So most places will be walkable. Enjoy Galveston, can be a fun city.

Thanks for your help with finding a place to stay pre-cruise guys. Ive ended up booking the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston-On The Beach hotel which seems decent with good tripadvisor reviews. Hotels are quite pricey pre-cruise, ive booked three nights and it was more expensive than I would have liked to have paid but needs must I guess!

  4. Moody gardens is west of downtown so not much around it except a small brewery. Would not consider that area walkable.

Thanks! Ive heard of 'the strand', this place has bars and restaurants right?

Im basically looking for somewhere we can walk to at night and visit a couple of bars and get a good american meal - I love places like millers ale house, buffalo wild wings etc in orlando so would the strand or near moody gardens have places like this? Basically I want ice cold beer and burgers/nachos etc, i'm easily pleased! :p

  5. The Strand area has some awesome bars & restaurants and even a confectioners. Most places are "eclectic" but in a fun way. Area is about 6 blocks long, 3 blocks wide but most hangout places are on The Strand itself. Other streets have several hotel options. The seawall area would be good to but is more mainstream/ commercial. It starts to get warm here (like above 35C) from middle May to early October so plan accordingly. We regularly have family coming in from the UK and Galvestion is always on their list. The Galvestion.com site mentioned will give you lots of info.

  6. Thanks guys,

You know what - I’m going to book it!

I’ve never been to Texas neither and looking at the size of the place it's huge! We’re flying to Houston IAH George Bush Intercontinental Airport and from there we will have a three night stay before we board the cruise. Any ideas of nice affordable family places to stay, near the beach or with a good pool? Is it best to stay in the Galveston area?

Depending on your budget the San Luis Resort is on what we call the Seawall and across the street from the beach. The Tremont Hotel is near the port in an area called The Strand which is a Victorian area shopping district. Another area to look at is around Moody Gardens. There are more budget friendly options, but if you stay close to any of these it'll work as a good base to explore the area.

  7. Unless another storm stalls over the island you'll be fine. You didn't mention your route to the port but suggest you avoid Harborside drive if there is any kind of rain. Cruising during the peak of hurricane season is risky anywhere along the gulf coast.

  8. 90 days prior you can select a check-in time from your cruise manager. Arrive during that 1/2hr time slot and check in at the counter then board the boat. Arrive before or after your time slot may cause a delay in boarding. The boarding pass youre given will then act as your s&s card til your cabin is ready approx 1:30 pm.

  9. If you are doing a partial transit from the Caribbean side, in a ship that goes through the old locks, Port is better than starboard. However, that does not guarantee that you will have perfect weather, or that there will not be a huge container ship to your left blocking the view. If you are going on a ship that has to use the new locks, side doesn't matter. What does matter is that you need to get out and move around the ship. EM
Doesn't matter with partial transit as port will face south as you go into the lock and north as you exit. As said you'll want to wander fore & aft to get the full experience. There is a viewing stand where those touring the lock can watch the ships go by on the south side of the old lock. Viewing stand comes up to about deck 5 so you maybe eye to eye with them!

  10. Nothing "over the air" you may get local stations in port but everything else is a satellite feed controlled by carnival

What is broadcast over the air in state rooms on TV.

  11. Never understood the "surprise cruise" concept. Besides all the logistics of time off & stuff, you're denying the other person(s) the participation in both the itinerary and planning as well as the fun of the anticipation. Guess it's a control thing.

Surprise vacations don't work out for most people. I would be a little annoyed actually if I found out last minute. I have responsibilities to tend to at home, bills to pay, a pet sitter to reserve, and limited vacation time. The gesture is nice, but I think it's better to give notice. Sorry it didn't work out for you but at least they were still surprised!

  12. We are taking a cruise on the Legend that starts at San Pedro (LA) and ends in Tampa.

Normally ship time would be Pacific time since we are leaving from LA. I am curious if ship time is adjusted during the cruise to whatever time zone we are in. I would appreciate the feedback.

Yes, time changes will be announced as they occur. Enjoy your cruise!

  13. How did you manage to bring 10 bottles on board Princess when they have the same restrictions as Carnival? Also in my experience corkage is rarely actually charged in the MDR on Princess, but to answer your question. No you can't.

Can I bring more than 1 bottle per person and pay corkage at embarkation? For example, last Princess cruise I brought 10 bottles on board, payed corkage on 8. Been searching but no luck finding an answer.

  14. Others will have to answer your question about hotel parking.

I drive in the morning of the cruise and use Galveston Park and Cruise. It is directly across the street from the terminal, so we walk across the street, eliminating the need for a shuttle.

The biggest draw for me is that they offer covered parking.

    Enjoy your cruise!

X2 on this! Used to use the shuttle on but this far more convenient. You park at the end of The Strand which is part of the historic district. Visit Kings confectioners if you can, fun store.

  15. The straw market in Nassau pushes my panic button. Never again.

Other islands, smaller markets are just delightful, however. One lady juices watermelon, adds a little “sumpin-sumpin” , whizzes. It all up in a blender with chipped ice - and o my goodness!!!

Nassau Straw market was fun before they opened the Atlantis complex. Our favorites now are the French side of St Maarten, Limon/Costa Rica and Cartgena, Colombia
