We’re going on our first NCL cruise this summer but been on Carnival before.

But it’s been 5 years. Would love some answers to the questions below and any other helpful tips.

    1.  Best foods/must haves in the specialty restaurants - Cagneys, Le Bistro, La Cucina?

    2.  Best foods/must haves in the free restaurants- dining rooms, buffet, Osheehans, etc.?

    3.  Do I need to bring cash for the casino?  Do they put winnings on the room card like Carnival?

    4.  Do we need to bring life vests with us to muster drill?  How do I know where The muster drill is at?

    5.  We have UBP- can I just head straight to a bar to get a drink or do I need to do something first?

    6.  When do I sign kids up for the kids club?

Any other helpful tips?  Thanks in advance!

I just got off the Jade in March. Really liked it.

    1) I didn't go to any specialty restaurants

    2) I loved the pot stickers in Jasmine Garden and mostly ate every dinner in the MDR. I tried O'Sheehans on the Star and didn't care for it so I never went this time around. If I could have the lava cake every night in the MDR though...I'd be so fat! But happy!!

    3) Didn't experience the casino

    4) Nope and like others said, it's on your card. Make sure you advise the staff member that you are there so they can check you off their list.

    5) Yep, grab a drink right away

    6) No kids but I heard as soon as you board you can register the tiny humans

Not sure if you are a lounge by the pool person but if you are not, I loved going to The Great Outdoors and sitting there on sea days. There is a bar and buffet and it's quite shaded too. A bit quieter than the pool area. Enjoy!!

  2. Hi Ellie,

If you book online, then you cannot choose your rooms. If you call and book over the phone, then you can select your rooms which is what I did.

As for your other questions, when you call Celestyal you can ask them that as well. The person we spoke with (Jack) was very helpful.

Ok thanks! My husband usually handles this as I always feel awkward handing someone cash 🤣 Unfortuntately he isn't coming so I must brave up.

I travel alone. When you get off the bus and say goodbye, simply hand them the cash and thank them very much. You'll do great!

  4. Stayed at Hotel Al Duca in Santa Croce neighborhood this past September. A beautiful hotel with a fabulous breakfast. Very close to the San Stae Vaparetto stop and in a lovely local area with a small grocery stores, wine shops restaurants and a 15 minute walk to the Rialto. I loved this hotel. Check it out on Tripadvisor.

I am having a dilemma.  I am trying to decide on my very first solo cruise.  I have only been on two cruises.  The first when I was a teenager was back in 1990 and the 2nd was last summer.

I hated the first cruise, but I LOVED the 2nd one.  I think part of the reason I loved the 2nd one so much was I was in Alaska, but I also noticed this ships are so much better with much more to do now.  (There was NO teen programming when I went on my first cruise, so I was bored out of my gourd on sea days).

I am single without kids, and I usually travel with my mom.  She and I have very similar likes and dislikes, and I enjoy her company.  Plus, I know she won't be able to travel forever, and I like to take her on trips when I can.

For my next trip, I want to try a solo trip.  Mom won't be around forever, I like to travel, and most of my friends are doing their own things with their families. I am what someone else on this board called an extroverted introvert.  I like people, but I also like time to recharge my batteries and don't usually have a problem being alone.  So, I'm doing this cruise as a toe in the water just to see how I like these types of trips by myself.  To be honest, cruises seem like they'd be much easier solo travel than some other options.

One more thing:  I'm not a big bar fly, and I don't visit the casinos.

Just had to post to say this is exactly me! So glad to know others are doing/thinking this too. I love traveling with my parents but know they won't always be around so I've been playing with the idea of an NCL cruise next February out of Port Canaveral. Only 5 days so a little dip into the solo cruise water. Still debating it though which is why I'm stalking these boards :-)

Have a dilemma..ship ports in Venice approx 7 am...my flight departs 12:30 pm (same day). Am tempted to stay two nights in Venice.  How would I go from pier to Hotel and then from Hotel to Airport. Is this feasible? Have been to Venice (land tour) before and would love to visit Burano again and 1st time to Murano.  Solo travel is daunting too.

    Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated...

@cruise.gal Do it. I did this in October; stayed 2 nights after our cruise (while being in Venice for 2 day prior to cruise). Lots of options to get around. I chose to stay in Venice before and then stayed in Mestre after the cruise. It was a 20 minute taxi ride from port to hotel and then I took the train into Venice. Also did Burano and Murano that day and it was fabulous! From the hotel in Mestre, it was a 30 minute taxi ride to the airport that the hotel arranged. It was a much less stressful way of leaving the cruise :-) Enjoy!

  7. I used this Lyft this month to get from Fort Lauderdale to Miami Port and back again. There was some surge pricing on the disembarkation day but that was around 8am-9am. We only got off the ship at 9:30am and then it was fine; prices had gone back down. Also used it around Fort Lauderdale as well and all was fine.

If I am in no hurry to get off the boat should I just wait somewhere? I do not want to be standing in a line for a long period of time as my back wont allow that. Thanks

Yep, you can wait in any public area or go to the buffet and grab a seat and some food. I never get off before 9:30am since I don't travel home the same day as debarkation day. I can't stand for long periods of time either.

  9. I'm also trying to understand the Excursions. We like the 3 included ones but are looking at the other ports. None of times are listed. And the ones we like are 4 1/2 hours which would leave us time to do other excursions, even private ones but they will not provide times until we are on board.

Does anyone have any experience they can share regarding Excursions with Celestyal?

I am thinking about staying at Hotel Al Duca. How did you transfer from the airport to the hotel and hotel to port?  Was it pretty easy? Did you have to carry your luggage very far?

You won’t regret it! So we used a shared transfer service from the airport to the hotel. They dropped us off near the San Stae vaparetto stop and then we walked maybe 5 minutes to the hotel. Over two small bridges I believe. My parents were with me and they found it quite easy with the bags.

Then for the trip to the port, we booked a private transfer from the hotel straight to the port. The guide came into the hotel to get us and help with the bags. It was awesome. A little expensive but worth it. Both transfers were booked with Viator.

This was a fabulous hotel. A great breakfast and the best location. Not too busy, lots of little restaurants nearby and a maybe 15 minute walk to the Rialto bridge.

I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

  11. I was on the Star in September and just got off the Jade earlier this month. I really liked this ship. I liked the layout; it was very similar to the Star. I agree with the others; The Great Outdoors was very nice and much quieter than the pool deck plus no smokers. I often hung out in the Bliss where, if no events, it was nice and quiet with comfortable chairs. I did like the Spinnaker too but only discovered it on my 2nd to last day! Big windows though and very comfy places to sit. I never ate at the Alizar MDR, only at Grand Pacific but I really liked it. I did try the Jasmine Garden one night and it was quite good but pretty loud since it was open to Magnums and the Cigar lounge. Enjoy!

  12. I did this through NCL and loved it. We started with the Catamaran tour which stopped for a 45 minute swim before arriving in Soufriere (free beverages including booze). The view of the Pitons from the boat was amazing! We arrived at the estate for a tour and lunch and then a drive to the waterfall. We were there about 30 minutes. Then a long, windy drive back to the port with a brief stop for photos and bathroom. All in all, I loved it.

  13. We did this in October (although we stayed two nights). But we chose to stay at the Plaza Hotel in Mestre. It is right across the street from the trains which made it easy to get back into Venice. And it was a quick taxi ride to the airport. Plus the room was huge!

Prior to the cruise, we stayed 3 nights in Venice in the Santa Croce district at an amazing Hotel (Hotel Al Duca). Wonderful hotel close to everything.

That's why I never bother to bid on an upgrade, you never know where you will end up.  I pick the cabin I want and stick with it.

Me too. I considered it but have such anxiety about noise that I didn't want to chance it. I will never bid for an upgrade. I can't imagine how the OP must feel. I hope they post and let us know what happened.

  15. Just off the Jade a couple weeks ago and Grand Pacific required men to wear long pants. Women could wear jeans as long as they were not ripped and no super short skirts. I watched a few men be turned away and told to put on pants if they were wearing shorts. Shirts didn't seem to matter (some had golf shirts on and some had t-shirts). This appeared to only be for dinner not lunch or breakfast and not on the embarkation day.
