  1. It is a nice walk. Check google maps, it's about a mile from the cruise terminal to the beginning of Bridgetown -- there's a nice marina with lots to see. I believe it's mostly wheelchair accessible.

If you need to, you could walk there and take a taxi back - lots of taxi vans are available.

  2. Can I walk to Boatyard and Harbor Lights beach from the cruise port pier?

I've walked from the Boatyard back to the cruise terminal. It's about a mile and a half. Harbor Lights is a little farther -- about 2 miles according to Google maps.

It's an easy walk, through part of Bridgetown and past a fish market. Safe during the day. Unknown at night.

Our next trip, we are thinking about walking to the Mount Gay Rum Distilleries, anyone tried that? Looks like it it a little over a mile.

  3. Let me start by saying this topic should not be on cruise critic. Secondly, I was just sitting here minding my own business when triggered by....

Imagine this: "Cruise neutrality" apply the same net neutrality rules to the cruise industry, how about "Amazon neutrality" -- this has all been tried. Do some research on how well Venezuela doing.

The net neutrality rules were put in place, what, 2-3 years ago. I think most of us can remember 2-3 years ago and the internet wasn't broken and in need of these rules.

It's really very simple. With net neutrality, there is more government regulation and intervention. Without net neutrality, there is less government regulation and intervention. In other words, we are now more free this week than we were a few weeks ago. (Freedom is good.)

It's also beneficial to look at history - look up how well government regulation and intervention did with the evolution of the phone. Cell phones were on people's to-do list in the 1940's and the first cell phones didn't start to appear until the 1970's. Government regulation and intervention put the breaks in innovation.

Net neutrality? No, I choose freedom.

& I'm still free to go on my next cruise in March.

  4. 500+ days and counting. At least I have two between now and then. Booked an Aft balcony, that will be a first. We love the Fantasy-class ships. Sure they are older and a little beat up, but they make up for it with the small passenger capacity, about 2,000, and all the open air places to sit, eat, relax.

Looking forward to getting back to some stops that I have not been to since our last Fascination trip: Barbados & St. Lucia. Been carrying a Barbadian dollar coin since then and looking forward to using it...

Ya' know honey, we have to go back to Barbados so I can spend this dollar I have... wouldn't want it to go to waste.

  5. ... We also met the lovely staff from the Bahamian Football Association .... and got their awesome recommendation for a tiny little hole in the wall lunch spot that was constantly busy with office folk doing take-out. OMG, cheap and fantastic traditional Bahamian food. And cheap drinks .

Remember the name of the place or where it was? Always like a locals spot...

  6. We like jumping on the ferry (50¢ each way) and going to Bacardi - there is a taxi from the ferry terminal to Bacardi, it was like $3 or $6 a person (must have been cheap, or I would not have done it). The tour is a little pricey, but you get a free drink / souvenir tumbler.

  7. You should not have asked. You have opened a can of worms. You will now get 500+ posts of absolutely useless stuff that you can not do without.

    DON

Totally agree! That being said, if you are going to be doing more cruising, I'd suggest the magnetic hooks so you can dry stuff.

  8. I like a balcony, but I do find that we do not use it to the full potential. I have had an inside cabin and with a little extra planning, you don't miss the balcony or ocean view. (the planning would be knowing the time when you pull into & out of port so you can be up on deck. Knowing the times for sunset/sunrise. Or not spending time in your cabin except for sleep.) I would say, if this may be the one cruise you ever take, get a balcony. Of course, then you'll be hooked.

  9. I am excited. How did you enjoy the cruise ship. I know one at sea day but I am just looking forwards to the sun, rum, and and finding more cruise friends! I also want to ask, what is the culture like in the ports. What are some of the best goodies to bring back home?

I enjoy the Fantasy Class ships in Carnival's fleet. Not so big, 2,600 passengers -- on some of the bigger ships, it feels like you are walking all day to get from one end of the ship to the other. Granted, the ship is older, but over the years it's had some make overs and has everything I'd want from a cruise ship, great food, entertainment, places to relax.

you could check out my review of the Carnival Ecstasy (https://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=589177) - similar ship.

Port culture is rather subjective. The people are always great. At some ports, not the ones on the Fascination, the vendors can get pretty aggressive (St. Lucia has a little - though, that may have changed after the hurricanes in St Thomas & St Maarten). I like to get out, away from the cruise port, to get a feel for the local community. If Sarafina in Marigot, St Martin is open go for some great french pastries.

    Enjoy!

  10. As you can see from my signature, the Fascination trip is the best trip I've taken (I love port days). Following is what I've done at the islands where the Fascination stops.

San Juan- we get a kick out of taking the ferry across the bay (50¢) and going to Bacardi / also like walking around Old Town

St. Thomas- Dollar Bus to red hook, ferry to St john, cab to trunk bay (beach & snorkel)

St. Maarten- Bernard's (three times-taking it again in April)

St. Kitts- Done both the train and Sir Walter Tours (the train is expensive, but worth doing once/if on a budget, go with Sir Walter)

St. Lucia-walked around town and hiked up to the governor's mansion

Barbados-walked around, then went to Copacabana Beach Club (our cab driver got us in with no cover)

I would recommend all of these. Have fun!

as you can see from the recent videos, st thomas is green and lush -- as I said before, these photos in the thread above were photoshopped and obviously posted to elicit a response and put forth an agenda..

again, didn't say there wasn't damage and the islands do have a long road to recovery.

anyway, I'm looking forward to getting back to the Caribbean next spring.
