  1. This should be fun. Is there a bar at the lighthouse or something? We want to ride around, drink, go to jacks shack, etc...

We bought a beer at the lighthouse. There is a little outdoor shop. Be careful of driving and drinking in a foreign country. Maybe one or two but wait til you get to Jack's Shack. Your are within walking distance to the ship.

  2. Thank you very much for the email and phone. I tried calling and left a message as well as an email. We will be there on Thursday March 10th, 2011. I hope it is fun. Do you know if we can stop at a local grocery to pick up some beers for the beach? or anywhere like that? Please let me know. Any advice would be welcome!

Go out of the cruise terminal, get your golf cart on the right. Then proceed down the street. The road will fork at a pond bear left. You are downtown in a tiny town. after a block or two go left at sign to museum. You will be at the ocean. There were stores up and down this area. Just ask anyone and they will tell you where you can find a store if you don't see one. At the museum they told us how to dget to the lighthouse. We had gotten some maps on the internet of the island. Not very informative, but remember there are not alot of roads. Very easy to maneuver.

  3. I need an email or a phone #. can someone post that for me? Will be there 2 weeks and 3 days from today!

To reach Nathan his email is nathanandlinda at tciway dot tc or phone

    number is 649-231-4856

Have fun we did this in Jan. and had a great time. We went to the town museum and then to the lighthouse, Queen Conch Museum and then ended up at Jack's Shack.

  4. Looking for respose from somone who's been recently. Nathan was having some issues with the carts recently, according to the reviews. Did you all have issues recently? Did they break down? I was considering canceling my reservation if they were still in need of repair.

    Thanks!

We rented the first week in January. We drove around for at least 3 hours and then the engine started missing. Then it got ok and did it about 2 more times. When we got by Jacks Shack it quit completely. My husband too the key to them across the street and we did not pay for the gas used as we had to end our day early with the rental. We would chance it again, it was so much fun. We did not pay for gas as we could not drive it to the gas station.

  5. Leah, we took the two golf carts everywhere. We were in Grand Turk last month on the Crown Princess. If you go back through my posts, I gave a pretty detailed account of what we did. You will pass the flamingos as you make your way to the lighthouse. Nathan's map kind of sucks (he also wants you to return it when you return the cart) so we brought our own directions. Still got lost but if we hadn't, we never would have found the beach with all the conch shells. Don't be alarmed when you pass cows, goats and are on dirt roads, just all part of the fun. Make sure to stop in at Governor's Beach on the way back to the ship. It was beautiful.

You will be able to see the golf carts from the ship. When you walk out, cut across the parking lot for employees to save a few steps.

    have fun!

We never saw any scooters or rentals on the island. I don't think they wuld be good because many of the roads are not smooth. Some asphalt turn into dirt then back into asphalt. We bounced around alot in the golf cart, but had great fun. Be sure to go to the Island museum.:D

  6. Nathan got back to me and we have one reserved, I will call today with CC #. We are only there from11:00 until 5:30, will we have enough time to see everything? How long does it take to get to the lighthouse? Anything else I need to know?

Yes you will have plenty of time. We were there a couple of weeks ago. Get off of the ship right away. Walk through the cruise terminal and bear left. If not sure of how to get out ask. When you walk out of the gates of the cruise terminal Nathan is on the right with the golf carts and some jeeps. To get to the small town go straight and bear left at split in the road (near salt ponds - a small little lake in front of you). We went to the Island museum (to the left) which we enjoyed andbut we missed going to the Her Majesty's Prison (on left)(heard it was good). At the museum they will give you directions of getting to the lighthouse. It was very easy and we had plenty of time. My husband does geocaching so that took time and was great fun. When we had seen what we wanted to see we went back to Jack's Shack. When you are heading back towards the ship watch for the dive shop small sign and Jack's Shack on the right . It is just south of Governors Beach which has a large pier. You can see the pier when getting off of the ship to your left. It is a fun island and the beaches are beautiful. The day we were there they made an announcement on the ship, as we were getting oof of the ship that all water activities were cancelled. The water was too rough and there was a bad undertow. We were glad that we had decided odn the golfcarts. They go pretty fast so you could cover alot of territory while on the island. Sometimes when we noticed alot of cars backing up behind us, we would get off of the road and drive in the grass or stop to let them pass. Have fund the people are fun and very helpful.:D

  7. Hi pacarolinagirl,

Did you ever hear from Nathan? I would like to rent carts also. Let me know how you made out please.

We heard from him right away, the next day. He does not take American Express. We always use it traveling, due to their great security. We used Master Card. We asked the next day if all was well, he said yes. Rented one for $70 for the two of us. Walk straight out of port, he will have them parked outside of the gate on the right. We went to the island Museum, my husband does geocaching and they have a cache there. We then asked how to get to lighthouse. Be sure to go the Her Majesty's Prison, it is near Museum and there are signs. We didn't go and were told that night it was fun. Went to the lighthouse and then to the Conch Museum. It is south of the lighthouse on the East Coast go straight south and keep on roads to the left. We enjoyed riding around, it was fun. Then back to Jacks Shack for remainder of the day. Had a fun day. When we were getting off of ship they announced all water activities had been cancelled on the island due to high winds, rough seas and bad undertow. Glad we had decided to rent a golfcart.

  8. Let the race begin!:D:D:D

We did have fun on the island. Be sure to go to the Island Museum, it is easy to get to. When you pick up you cart go straight ahead, it is on the left off a side street, you will see signs in town also we did not go to the Queen's prison and were told by people later that we definitely shuld have gone there. My husband does Geocaching and we did that also on the island and one was at the museum. Lots of fun. The lighthouse was not open when we were there, but you could walk around the area.

  9. I had emailed Nathan for a cart rental in December and I did receive a response from him asking me to email or call in my credit card. I don't feel comfortable emailing my card info so I've been trying to call him with no success. Is he typically hard to reach? Is there a better time to reach him than others? I really want to rent the cart for the afternoon so we can go out to the lighthouse.

From all of the threads I have read, people emailed the cc number. We did for Jan. and no problem.:)

  10. great except when you come 15 min of the ship leaving!

What happened that you got back only with 15 minutes to spare? Did it break down? I guess when we get urs we will tell Nathan that we will leave it and bring him the key when we get a cab back to the port??

WOW we leave in 29 days! HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE! WOW only 29 days until Christmas!

  11. A trip from the ship port to West Bay by bus and water taxi is interesting

    and fun too.

Here is how to go. Go outside the dock to the main road, look for the

number 2 bus (mini bus) Make sure it is going left (west) to West End.

At West End, about a thirty minute ride and $2 fare, get off the bus

before it turns onto a dirt road and walk to the left. Walk on the dirt

road about 200 yards towards the water and you will see Fosters Bar

in the distance. On the water to your right you will see the Water Taxi

    Dock.

Get on a Water Taxi, fare $3, ask to go to Infinity Beach dock, a ten minute ride.

You will wind up on the beach in front of Infinity Bay Condominiums.

This is a public beach right along the shoreline. To your left is

Bananarama, to your right is Tabyana and a little further right is

the beach with the best snorkeling on Roatan.

Is there a taxi to get there? If so about how much?

  12. Deck - 6

    Cabin # - 6562

    Class – D4

Front Starboard, Front Port, Back Starboard, Back Port, Central Park, or Boardwalk – Front Starboard

Bed near?(balcony or bath) – bath

Quiet Cabin (With comments on problems. Note if connecting. ) – very quiet, even though it’s a connecting cabin and located right at the entrance to the hallway

Balcony View - Give comments on view, noting if location of any obstructions or privacy was an issue– No obstruction from room or balcony. Lifeboats are on deck 5 so view of water is partially blocked if you look straight down. Not an issue though.

Balcony Size? Normal or oversized for class? – Normal and good

    Was wind a problem? No

Any specific problems with this cabin? No

    Any other comments?

Great location – easy access to Promenade, Central Park, elevators, stairs, etc.

We didn’t like the bed by the bathroom configuration at first. It was awkward for 2 people to unpack. Once we settled in & got used to it, we preferred it over the bed by window configuration. We pulled the drapes all the way back and the living space felt very spacious. It was easy to access the balcony and very comfortable sitting on the sofa right by the ocean view.

We are booked for Deck 9 Sup. Balcony Cabin 9268 for July 3rd, any comments.? I keep reading about the way the room is set up, too close to wall or too close to closet, hard to get our of the bed? Any ideas?

  13. I just found this thread and am so happy it's still active! We are avid do it yourselfers!!! Sure there have been a few mishaps but they make the best stories later on...

Just booked a 10 day European Wonder cruise on HAL and am looking forward to seeing what this thread has regarding our ports of call!!

We are flying into Venice pre cruise then driving to Civitavecchia. Ports are Portofino, Marseilles, Barcelona, Cadiz, Lisbon, La Havre, a UK island and then Dover.

We just got back from the Med. 12 day cruise, can only say when we did Barcelona last year that we did one ship tour then on our own walking around town with our Frommers and Rick Steve's books. We just did Istanbul, Izmier, Iraklion, Mykonos, Santorini, Katakolon, Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt and Nafplion, we had a wonderful cruise and will do a review on it shortly. We took a tour in Izmir only with the ship and all of the rest on our own. Some we rented cars and others walked around town, took trams, and buses.

  14. I enjoy monitoring this board and reading everyone's advice. A few years ago I used to contribute lots of help here for those who wanted advice on how to do any of the European ports on their own (we have been to most of these places multiple times). I stopped most of my help because I got tired of being flamed by others who insisted that the only way to do anything is on an organized tour (this is true for some folks). However, given the very high price of tours (the low value dollar does not help) I am surprised to see almost everyone resigned to tours. Western Europe is pretty easy to navigate on your own although it helps to do some homework. The advantage of being on your own is you avoid the "cattle like" mentality of some tours, get to do what you want when you want with who you want, and usually you will save money. In fact, on a 12 day Med cruise you can easily save over $1000 (or more) by doing things independent of tours. The down side of independent travel is that you do need to do your pre-trip homework,, but to some of us that is part of the fun. My main problem with most tours is that they try to crowd too much "touring" into a short period of time without giving you a chance to see the real Europe. A lot of the joy of visiting some cities (Rome, Paris, etc) is spending time at an outdoor cafe enjoying local cuisine, wine and people watching (this is how many Europeans enjoy themselves). Personally, when in Rome I would quickly give-up seeing some site in order to have time for lunch or a snack at one of the cafes in the Piazza Navona. But, I guess this is where the "different strokes for different folks" saying reigns surpreme.

How was Knossos in Hiraklion? Have read many reviews good and bad, we were thinking of taking Bus #2 to Knossos and then a bus to town. What are your thoughts.

  15. Glad to hear in the end the medical issue was resolved satisfactorily.

We are traveling on the Emerald Princess in March and have contacted Levi twice via his website but he has not responded. I am surprised since he is so highly recommended by cruise critic members. I used the contact form supplied in his website, and in the comment section indicated what we would be interested in.

I did contact Mangoo in Grenada and have a commitment from him for a tour there.

Maybe January is too early to get a commitment from him? I don't know whether to look for someone else for our tour or for a third time, contact Levi via his website.

We are also going to Bonaire, and know he runs tours there too and would be interested in his group in Bonaire also.

Any suggestions to me from you?

We have been to Granada several times. The last time we went with Mandoo in Grenada. It was the best tour we have done there. He is very professional, new vans and buses. He is very highly regarded on the Island.
