I know this is an older post, but in case you're still wondering about things to do at either port.... we also took a cruise that contains both of these ports of call.  Grand Turk was stunning, the waters on the beach weren't super clear, but we hired a boat from the beach to take us out snorkeling and those waters were some of the clearest I've ever seen.  Really a beautiful beach and the snorkeling was great with clear views.  Amber Cove we hired a taxi and went to 27 Waterfalls, a park inland just a bit.  I don't remember how long of a drive or how much it cost, but it wasn't too bad.  At the park you hire a guide who will take you on however many of the waterfalls you'd like to see.  This trip has been one of our favorite sites of all time.  You hike up the mountain side via trails (not too strenuous) and then get to slide down, jump off of, and swim down the waterfalls to where you started from.  At the end is a small restaurant where we had lunch, then grabbed a cab back to the ship.  Both days were incredible and are memories we still talk about.  Hope these ideas help!

*Edit, my husband and I were about 37 at the time of our trip, 40s now, and would still be able to do both of these.

Thank you so much. Very helpful! I appreciate your time and message.

  2. Hello there. Trying to decide between two cruises this November out of Miami.

the difference being between a cruise with Grand Turk over one with Amber Cove.

i have read on many forums that Amber Cove is a port that many people just stay on the ship. It has just a fancy pool and not much more desirable.

Between these two ports, which one has better beaches and perhaps more to explore? For me and my girlfriend. Both in our fourties’.

    thanks for any tips

We were on a cruise in December that stopped at both.  If you want the better beach, its Grand Turk, no question. Its *right* off the pier and is a great beach. The water wasn't very blue or clear but the sand was smooth and the water was so easy to walk in/out and around in. Chairs were plentiful.  There's also a neat NASA exhibit, a pool, and some stores right there.

Amber Cove is sort of an artificially created/private area.  We walked around a little but did a shore excursion of horseback riding along the beach (which was a lot of fun). I didn't actually see the pool there so can't comment on it, but I've heard that any beach requires a shore excursion or private transportation.

Thanks for this valuable info 👍🏽

  5. According to Carnival's FAQ: A $15 USD corkage fee, per 750 ml bottle, will be charged should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the main dining room, specialty restaurant or bar.

A corkage fee is a charge assessed at time of service at a restaurant for every bottle served that is not bought on the premises.

That leads me to believe if you buy a bottle at the dining room, you're not charged the fee.

Here's a wine menu from the Magic in June 2018; includes bottle and glass prices.

You are awesome! Thank you sooo much!

  6. We brought more soda on in Curaco on one of our cruises.

I feel the Capucina Italian restaurant is worth it for the better dishes, sit down service and atmosphere, but everybody has different expectations. You may not feel it is after you try it. Just try it and then you will know for yourself.

As far as taking pizza slices, muffins or sandwiches, they might be messy to pack. We always take cereal boxes as snacks. Easy to fit in your bag and easy to eat. Some countries do not allow bananas and fruit onto their island, so stick to packaged products. I also bring bags of peanuts from home as a snack for excursions and late at night (not a pizza eater).

    Thanks for the tips!

  7. hi there! Does anyone know what nights are “formal night”? Can I bring onboard more can pop/soda from one of our ports? Of our ports can anyone recommend an ATV rental company near port where we can rent it per hour to do our own thing? Is the Capucina Italian restaurant worth the $15 upcharge? To save money and time looking for food are we allowed to bring a few snacks from ship (pizza slices, muffins, sandwiches etc..) during our excursions? Thanks.

  8. I can't speak about Port Canaveral specifically because the last time I cruised from there I didn't need to use the services of Special Needs, but I can give you an overview for any port.

The Uber will drop you at the same place that everyone gets dropped off. Porters will take your luggage at the drop spot. Then you go to the entrance and someone just inside the door will direct you to the Special Needs line or call someone over to assist you if necessary.

It's very easy. I can't remember if I have to get off my scooter to go through security (I do at the airport) but it is not a stressful experience at all. If the person needing Special Assist is in a manual wheelchair, someone will be assigned to push it up the ramp and onto the ship for you.

Thanks for the info and help!
