Yes, it is definitely better to layer under a rain jacket than bring along winter gear.

Remember SE Alaska, the Ketchikan, Skagway, etc area is a rain forest. Layers is the key to me. We went in August and it was very rainy in Ketchikan. Had a roomy waterproof hooded raincoat with room for layers. Layer for the temperature forecasted. Loved it, rain and all!

Thanks, Jazzbeau. I understand now.

For those of us not as knowledgeable on cruise lines, how do you define an expedition cruise?

Ah ha! Thanks again, LeRenardrouge!

Do you need to carry all of these over-the-counter meds in your carry on, in a ziplock bag? Or can these items and other common over the counter meds/supplements just go in your regular checked-in baggage?

Huh, I looked up Meclizine and it appears that Bonine is one of the brand names it is sold under. It is a histamine and so that is why it made me drowsy.

My last cruise was many many years ago. I did get seasick the first day at sea. I think I took Bonine and I was pretty woozy. Is there anything else to use that doesn’t make people quite so drowsy?

Our first cruise was on the Coral Princess to Alaska 15 years ago when she was brand new. How has time treated her?

Great! Looks like our decision for 6096 on the Sky will be just fine. However, I am sure they all are great. Maybe some day we will do a WC.

Jim, Thanks for the explanation. It sounds from your description that the stern of a ship like Viking Sun would have more stability than the bow simply by how it rides waves. Am I guessing correctly?
And thank you for your fabulous on-going reviews.

We don’t even have one day in Naples. What can we get in during that short time? Our ship is in port only from 11 AM to 9 PM. I think Pompeii or Herculaneum is at the top of our list.

Me too! Tried to go back to slow down to read it more carefully and it was gone.

Thanks Peregrina for your usual great advice. Also thanks to Azulann, Sunbrookgal and Joyce and everyone else for all the help to make us newbies a bit more relaxed in the planning process!

Thanks, all! I will share with Dean. And Floridiana, you’re right. somebody has to support the local economy- just not my husband in that way!

There are so many warnings about scammers and pickpocket artists in many of the larger tourist towns. So, Men, do you still just use your wallet kept in a pants pocket or something hidden under a shirt? Silly question, but what do most of you use? My husband scoffed at me for suggesting something other than his usual wallet.

Thanks. We had better bring lots of small bills...and Euros!

So, do the gratuities added to your account include all staff on board? Where do you typically still tip? I am guessing excursion hosts, Viking transfer drivers, who else do you tip separately?

Yes, sometimes they do look like the photos! I have seen them in the northern areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin and they are different every time. Beautiful! They should be on everyone’s bucket list.

In that video it looks like people have claimed most of the chairs with their towels, but are not by them or in the water. Is this an issue usually? Easy to find open chairs?

That is exciting! Any guesses on when the schedule will be made public?

I will second that 'thank you." Your comments confirm that our future cruise on Sky will be great! Safe travels home.

Phil, and i suppose once people are seated for tea, it is for the duration. There’s no turnover, right?
Viking versus Oceania
in Viking Ocean
Posted
Lots of opinions on this thread as both cruise lines have loyal followers. We have not sailed on Oceania and have our first cruise (of what I hope are many) this October on Viking Sky. One of my favorite aspects of Viking is that they do not have formal nights. Does Oceania? What other cruise lines don’t include formal nights?
