  1. You cannot give it to the porters anymore. It has to be brought onboard with your carry-on luggage. Twelve bottles can fit nicely into a regular carry-on bag (assuming it is sturdy enough to handle the weight) ;p

Understood, thank you. And yes, I have the reinforced carry-on just for this purpose! #priorities

  2. One more question:

I am bringing a case of wine onboard for an 18-day cruise (yes, I know that each bottle is subject to an $18 corkage fee). My question is, everything I am seeing indicates that all wine needs to be in my carry-on luggage. Is this really the case? I can't slap a luggage tag on the case of wine and have it sent to my cabin along with the rest of the luggage?

If that's what it is, fine; I'll just need to plan my carry-on accordingly. Thanks!

  3. I posed your question to my Zaandam MDR Wine Steward just two hours ago and was assured that the MDR will indeed decant your wine if they are holding it for you and you request the evening before.

Wow, that was really nice of you to ask for me--thank you!

  4. And I thought this thread was about jeans. How did bathrobes enter the picture.

Please, bring back Jean, Jean, the dancing machine !

It's the whole slippery slope thing: jeans lead to ripped t-shirts, lead to short shorts, lead to bathrobes, lead to (as one poster invoked) "the bathing suits too many plus size cruisers wear." Soon there will be naked people eating surf and turf in the MDR, don't ya know.

And all this because a few people chose to wear jeans. I hope you're happy now.

  5. Are you talking about decanting when you go for dinner or dropping your wine off a few hours early and asking them to decant ahead of time?

If you just decant at dinner time, both the MDR and Pinnacle Grill will do it without a problem.

We have never tried in the MDR but have dropped off wine at lunch time in the Pinnacle Grill with instructions to decant at a certain time before dinner.

Yes, I meant to decant ahead of time. That's great, thanks for your response!

  6. Yes they will. You will have paid a $17 corkage fee for any 750ml bottles that you consume in public places. You are allowed 1 - 750ml bottle per passenger per stateroom that are over 21 that will be consumed in your stateroom.

Yes, I'm clear on the corkage fee. I was asking whether the restaurants would decant the wine for me.

  7. My last cruise was on Koningsdam. I don't remember a single outfit worn by other people on that cruise. And when on a cruise, unless an outfit is so obnoxious as to scream for attention, I probably won't notice it then either. I remember some of DW's outfits, and that's all that matters to me.

There are certain problems that are Cruise Critic problems, not actually on-board problems. I think dress codes tops that list.

    Amen to all of this.

  8. This seems like vengefulness against “fashion police” that are imagined in posts by a handful of people. You can’t find much disagreement that HAL’s guidelines are what need to be observed - there is just some sharing of opinions on what would be ideal. I’m sorry if you felt provoked.

Oh honey...if you only knew how non-provoked I feel, and how little I care. We are going on vacation to have fun and relax. I actually came on this site to do some research, but it turns out to have been a ton of laughs among me and my friends, not to mention a fascinating sociological study. It's like Lord of the Flies up in here.

Look, by the time we get on the ship, we will have taken planes, trains, busses, and cabs. We're taking three weeks off of work and spending no small amount of money to see some really cool things, have some spouse's together time, relax, and LAUGH.

Y'all need to acquire some humor and perspective, and get over yourselves. You're nuts if you think some interweb stranger's opinion of what I should or shouldn't wear actually affects my reality.

By the way, I've narrowed down my Gala Night outfits, and am leaning toward this one. Thoughts?

  9. Tried to eat one pre made sandwich on the Veendam recently. I emphasize "tried". Just awful......

They did have a made to order line available.

I suffered a back injury before boarding and could not stand there long enough to try one.

Oh my god, what did you do?? That's terrible that you weren't able to use the made-to-order sandwich bar, but the pre-mades were not to your liking. Personally, I refuse to tolerate any cruise ship that doesn't have a tableside made-to-order sandwich trolley.

  10. Anyone else on this crossing, via Iceland and Greenland? We are Tom and Ron from Oakland, California. We will be returning to the States after a couple of months in Europe. Looking forward to the Iceland/Greenland experience.

Hi again, guys! Jeff and Tony from Dallas. Looking forward to meeting you on the ship. We've been having fun looking at the different ports and getting excited about the trip.

We're really looking forward to Iceland/Greenland, as well. I have always wanted to go to Greenland, so really hoping to see a polar bear floating by on an iceberg.

  11. You make my case that you did imply that folks wearing jeans qualifies as 'smart casual', because of your comment to the effect of 'look at this picture of a guy wearing jeans, and how can this not be considered 'smart casual'?

Point is that most folks who choose to wear jeans in the MDR are not dressed like the guy in your picture, which drops their level of attire below the 'smart casual' threshold; so we're not comparing apples to apples in your analogy.

I love it when people tell me what I am implying. I believe that my words and accompanying photo were specific.

This thread is like that interminable committee meeting that just won't die.

  12. While I have not heard that HAL plans to stop having its own singers and dancers, the cruise director made a comment on the last cruise that the contract that the singers and dancers work under prohibit the ship from using the entertainers in any other capacity on the ship.

This meant that on a long cruise with a limited number of production shows , other than rehearsals, the entertainment staff had no duties on the ship.

The cruise director commented that he would like to see the entertainment staff available to the cruise director to supplement his staff for activities or other duties.

Maybe (pure speculation on my part) the contract with the supplying agency is up for negotiation?

Yeah, as a performer myself, let me say that we don't train our whole lives as musicians, dancers, and actors so that we can be passing out bingo cards. Furthermore, there is a good deal of rehearsal that goes on to maintain these shows, so it's not like the entertainers are only working 6 hours per week.

  13. No, but you did imply that the look is typical of what the 'Jeans look' would be, and how could that look not be viewed as 'smart casual'.

When the reality is (from our experience) that most folks sporting jeans in the MDR do not look like that at all. It is typically more like jeans and a t-shirt, or perhaps a polo. And this is a far cry from the photo you posted.

Well, no, I didn't imply anything. I stated that the picture I posted was at least "smart casual," even though the guy was wearing jeans.

This thread is really becoming a gripe-fest. It's like Nextdoor on the ocean.

  14. I agree! It is a sign of respect for the ship and tradition. The ship’s officers dress formally as a sign of respect to the passengers, it seems only reasonable that passengers return the same show of respect in the attire they choose to wear. Sort of like standing for a national anthem.

    20 cruises and counting!

Would that be the Dutch National Anthem? I'm being facetious, but seriously--the two things are not analogous.

In any event, I think that most of us grown-ups have a sense of what is appropriate attire for a particular venue (and "appropriate" is indeed subjective). For those who truly have no clue, well, welcome to life; that's just how it goes sometimes.

But how about we stop with the judgy, attire-policing? Go on about your own business.
