I'm on board, and we've just had a update from the Captain - apparently, we've had more favourable weather conditions than expected in the last few hours, so should arrive in Soton about an hour late. This morning, we were told it would be 4 hours late, so good news for everyone boarding tomorrow.

It is, according to Mr Cruachan, a display of remarkable rudeness should one not ask for more than one breakfast.

Rumour has it that on the (one) occasion Mr C, feeling a little off colour, requested only two, the kitchen staff took it personally and downed tools. We don't want that to happen again, do we?

*For those newer to the forum, Mr Cruachan has a feature on his ship photography website entitled "Disasters subsequent to my taking piccies of passing boats doing no harm to anyone", or similar. Most of the unfortunate victims of Mr Cruachan's camera lens have subsequently come a cropper.

You could always take the Eurostar to Paris and then high speed train to Venice or Rome to pick up a Cunarder.

I've done this several times; unless it's changed recently, it involves changes of train and takes two days, unless one is prepared to sleep in bunk beds on the (very noisy, hot and unpleasant) overnight sleeper. There is no way on earth that I would do it with anyone elderly:eek:

This is good to know. I'm on the same cruise as you and last time I was on the QV I found the pool far too cold!

I fear that having temperatures quoted in Cunard's FAQs does not necessarily make it so...

Gill, have you tried Sainsbury's Travel? Their cover for elderly/infirm non-travelling relatives is very much less restrictive than others.

Of course people who did treat their servants like that probably ended up seriously short of servants. :D

I sort my wardrobe into colour ways and pack so the matching things are in the same cubes. Makes dressing so easy. Pull out the case with the colour you want showing thru the sheer wall and you are ready to go.

Gosh! I'm afraid this is how I do it:

Dig out suitcases. Attach identifying features; these invariably turn out looking exactly the same as everyone else's.

Half-heartedly fold clothes. Place directly into suitcase.

If insufficient space, faff around removing then replacing items, often several times.

Convince self that no one worth bothering about will either know or care that the same garment has made (at least) two appearances in fourteen days.

Shut case.

On arrival: Open case. Hang up clothes (this is the important bit). Perhaps my clothes are peculiar (quite possible), but by the next morning everything is fine.

I cannot imagine where you'd safely keep luggage for a cruise on the overnight sleeper - even in 1st class, the compartment is tiny.

Better option may be an overnight stop in Switzerland; Lucerne has decent hotels an easy walk from the station.

 

Not sure how this would work if you are on freedom dining but it works well if you are on set seating.

Strangely, on Oceana freedom dining it worked better than with previous experiences on set seating. Every evening I just ordered, told them I didn't eat the offending item (only one thing in my case, though it's something that has become horribly ubiquitous in recent years) and asked them to come back to me if there was a problem. I don't recall there ever was.

One thing I struggle to understand ?,how do you take so many photographs without people spoiling them.

I was on this cruise, and am mortally wounded at the suggestion that I would have spoiled the photographs.:D

The OP even managed to photograph my favourite table in the Commodore Club on the one occasion I was not in residence.

Moral 1 - Check your emails just before you leave home.

Similar thing happened to us - we'd booked a two day shore excursion in St Petersburg. Message received on board advising it had been cancelled. No good checking emails before you leave: when I got home I checked - notice was sent at 0846 on the day we embarked, by which time we were long gone.

To add insult to injury, when Cunard refunded the tour cost the exchange rate had dipped, so they refunded less than we had paid.:D

I think you're hit the nail on the head there; it's because in the UK we just see the final price and that's it. When I go to the US, I look at a menu and add 30% or so on to the prices I see to cover the tax and the tip. I agree that the price of drink shown should be the actual price, not with an added percentage, but that's what they do in the US, that's what they on the ship.

Perhaps it also has something to do with the fact that the price is in dollars and some in the UK immediately translate that into GBP, believing they're paying about £13 for a large Sauvignon? On the P&O forum, there is much made of the difference between bar prices on Cunard and P&O - we were on P&O in January, are creatures of habit and, after a fortnight, our bar bill was only about 8% higher on Cunard.

I get the full brochure by requesting it online in the name of my late cat, who is on their records as a potential new customer. Cunard likes new customers far better than old ones, and sends one immediately.

He is obviously now on some central database, as every time I book I am asked if he is accompanying us. Not terribly likely.:D
