I suspect some people are using the wrong terms for some of the shows. Production shows are the named shows with the resident company of four singers (2M/2F - the ones wearing or holding microphones) and 10 to 12 dancers) - on Ruby Princess (where I am now) they are Colors of the World, Stardust, and Magic To Do (which has an additional male singer who appears only to do that show). Then there are the guest entertainers. We’ve had three - a hypnotist, a female singer covering a number of different songs, and a male singer doing a Prince tribute show. Guest entertainers are only on the ship for a few days so these shows will vary from cruise to cruise.

To me, a variety show has multiple artists each doing just one or two numbers (variety of performers). From my experience, they’re not typical on Princess although tonight we have a single performance of a “Farewell Variety Show” which is billed as having the resident company, guest entertainers, and officers. It strikes me as thrown together which makes me wonder if a planned guest entertainer had to cancel or missed the ship yesterday.

Yes agree perhaps the word ‘production show’ I used is throwing some commenters off but that’s their term not mine

Maybe call it was it is .. Tribute montage performed by Princess singers and dancers and house band IMG_2498.thumb.jpeg.5350128c54754f704b365cfcb089a214.jpeg

I suspect you will never see a show on any cruise ship--Princess or on any other line--that is the level of the Broadway show.  Apples & oranges.  Keeping that expectation in mind, several of the ones we've seen on Princess had excellent concepts & execution including set design, vocal talent, choreography & costumes.

perhaps I misspoke .. I don’t mean Broadway per se .. I meant the type of show that included set design, movable sets and backdrops, singers walking down a staircase , coming up from below floor etcetc.

‘Magic Do It’ last nite at least had that .

as others have said they used to have two longer shows so getting there 30 mins early was ‘worth it’. Now the show is 45 mins long so it should be ‘worth’ the wait imho,

they are NO Rock Opera or Spotlight Bar or on another thread someone spoke about shows called Bravo or Fire or something similar. Nope.. just tributes on this Alaska cruise.

But on the flip side we have enjoyed all three comedians .. Ronnie Printz?, Matt Bergman and Kivi Rogers all in Club Fusion which has a nice comedy club vibe.

I have been doing multiple cruise on Princess for 20 years. The production shows have always been a medley of songs, dance and costumes based upon the theme of the shows. If anything the newer shows such as Magic to Do (one of my least liked production shows) is moving a bit away from just the song and dance.

Princess has never really done Broadway type shows. Always been like Around the world, or the route 66 themed medley. They have gone to more video screen backgrounds and less physical scenery and props.

Princess has moved to more solo tribute type guest performers, with less comedy, magic  type shows. However they have always the solo singer, instrumentalist, tribute (impersonator) as well. While the mix has moved a bit more to the solo singer not by a large degree.

Just saw ‘Magic Do It’ and quite enjoyed it ; definitely the best of the 7 days of shows.

  4. What shows have you seen this year you e enjoyed?

So far we’ve had ‘She will rock you’ one singer doing tribute to female rock stars

’Colours of the world’ the ship’s singers and dancers doing different nation style songs

‘Stardust’ again ships singers and dancers doing tribute to bygone eras

    The Prince ‘tribute’ singer

Tonite is ‘Magic to do’ so mother music tribute to show times from Wicked, Godspell and Pippin done by .. you guessed it.. the ship’s singers and dancers who are talented but seeing essentially the  same thing every nite is not how I recall these nightly shows.

  5. Is it just me or has Princess seriously cut back on the type, variety and overall quality of the nightly shows in Princess theatre post covid?

After 21 cruises, I’ve seen a few. I recall the shows being darn near off Broadway style with elaborate moving sets and shows that sometimes rivalled NYC.

Now they are all just the Princess singers, dancers and house band doing covers of popular songs then and now.

    Or ‘tributes’

Or like last nite on board the Ruby, a singer with some back up creds doing a Prince tribute for a total of 5 songs peppered with a whole lot of chatter with audience.
‘how many folks here married .. raise your hand. Now give your sweetie a smooch. You sir.. how many years? 45?! Let’s give this man applause! And you over there .. yes you.. how many for you?! 10?! Wow give her a round of applause!’

Not my idea of how to fill a 45 min set.

No stage decor just lots of laser lights and strobes.

so .. are there any of the types of shows Princess used to have and some cruise lines still have?

I reported to steward .. he agreed a sensor problem

I said I don’t care if it stays off .. I do care when it stays ON for hours in middle of nite

hopefully maintenance looked at today while we were out

When painters tape did not make it turn off I figured it was a faulty sensor. Maintenance must have fixed it as last nite it worked fine… on for brief time when needed then off quickly.
    THAT I can live with.

  7. Hi

on Ruby ..I know why the motion sensed light is located by bathroom but last nite ours kept coming on and staying on even tho calm seas and no doors were opening or anyone near them.

i have masking taped up the sticking out bulb.. is that enough to stop it as this one appears faulty .. don’t want to have to fuss with maintenance needing to access our room is this might work.

    thoughts or other suggestions?

  8. For the first time in years I’m thinking of NOT buying a FCD on upcoming cruise.
When this started you had 4 years to use it so I often bought a couple.

then it switched to must book within 2 years of purchase .. ok I get as it’s a liability on their books.

    now it’s only a year.
With so many $99 deposits with extra OBC promos, it’s a toss up whether it makes sense to buy ahead.

You can order flowers on the app. Go to your profile and select “Onboard Packages”. That takes you to the page where you can order Plus or Premier. But you will also see a “Menu” bar in the top right corner. When you click on that it brings up a page with other options. Choose the menu item “Extras” and under that is the option to preorder flowers. IMG_1165.thumb.jpeg.50f563cae8109814082da02c63daed20.jpeg

Thank you for the extremely thorough explanation! I don’t know why I didn’t notice that when I ordered water.

now I get message saying not available so perhaps it is because we sail in only 3 days in which case I’ll have to do on board.

    Again thank you

  10. I’m having a brain fog moment. Travelling with DD and GD in one cabin on one booking #.

when DD downloaded princess app and tried to ‘log in’ to her account with booking # , the message came up that booking number had already been entered.

i wanted her to be able to see all the stuff I see.

Ive linked all guests onto booking # and filled in all the guest info etc so we are ready to

    go.

what does she need to do?

  11. I am travelling with daughter and granddaughter. I booked the cabin we are sharing so one booking number. I have completed all the steps on app and have a QR code.
Is that good for all three of us?

or does each passenger in one cabin have individual QR codes?

if the latter, where to find?

previously I just printed up boarding passes so the QR code way is new to me.

    TIA

Thank you for the detailed info.  I do still feel like Princess is trying to grab some extra dollars or maybe I just dont like the new law.

And Massachusetts and one other state I don't remember. Companies think these laws will spread so that is why they are doing it for all customers and not just the ones whose state requires it.

At least you can still buy Princess protection insurance.. as of Oct 2023, depending where you live you cannot due to state and provincial laws not allowing ‘cancel for any reason’ insurance

Have you confirmed on a ship by asking at the Internet Cafe if the single-day charge for MedallionNet is still $20?  I am doubtful that is the case since the pricing went up for full-voyage packages.

July 2024..just checked on Medallion app and as Elite, the charge for 7 day cruise was $118 Canadian($16.85/day) for one device and that was 50% off!

The discount is offered as OBC not a less $ charged to your credit card.

I will wait and use Wifi at ports of call when available..ie visit a coffee shop or bar 🙂

Good point about the insurance. Wonder if/how a rebook would affect a 60 day look back period for pre-existing conditions.

Excellent point… but our AAA insurance is 6 MONTHS pre existing not 60 days so even worse .

I sent an email with a screenshot of the new fare to my Princess Planner and will report back.  It will be interesting to see how the Best Price Guarantee works in my situation, as I booked a cabin for 3 people.  The "new" price is actually MORE for Guests 1 and 2 (by a little) but the price for Guest 3 went from $999 to $0 so the net savings to me would be $901.  Guests 1 and 2 DID get a better price at the time of the original booking.  The savings all flow from the "3 and 4 Sail Free" promo.  I pleaded with my Planner that it would be really complicated to cancel, put a couple thousand back onto Gift Cards, and then re-book.  We will see what happens.  And this is NOT after the final payment date.  Final Payment is over a year and a half away!

Just went through this … sale with OBC happened a week after we booked but way before final payment.

3 phone calls to CSA, 3 emails to PVP and 3 more emails to customer relations at

    customerrelations@princesscruises.com

With the last email, I  asked to have my request escalated to higher management.

I have a tracker on my emails so I know if and when and how often it is read.

I got a reply the next day with a compromise remedy where they met me in the middle.
Not a 100% win for me but better than a total loss.

Like you, cancelling and starting over ( cruise, dining, flights, excursions) would have been a pain… for them and me.

    Email them and persevere.

Tipping at the bar after you are served is tipping for service whatever the motive is. Handing the room steward money on your first meeting is a bribe and is patronizing. What extra service is expected before you are even there one night? Are they expected to be tucked in at night?

Perhaps I should have made myself more clear to avoid any wrath… I ask for wine glasses and robes soon as I get into cabin .
When they arrive, I thank the steward and give a $20 tip.
So no, it is not a bribe.

On the Royal I really liked the key west cooler. But I do have to admit that different bartenders made it a tiny bit differently. We ended up going to the same bar every day because the bartenders there made it perfectly to my taste without any directions from me! Fabulous!

As everyone says they will make anything you want. I want to try a non alcoholic aperol spritz next time - I’m looking for a recipe but the bartenders probably know one already!

Ooh now THAT she would love !
