Our itenarary was changed a couple of times while we were on board. Our arrival to Lagkawi was delayed by 3 hours however the captain extended our departure from that port til 7pm. Captain said that port officials from Lagkawi required the ship to travel at lower speeds due to many fisherman in the area, however an employee had already told us that there were mechanical issues.

Thanks for the update. Hope they fix the Jewel  soon so your trip isn't further interrupted.

The ship sounds amazing after the refurb. Keep posting and enjoy your trip to Australia.

I really can't believe anyone would be that upset about the removable of a slide? I am sure many guests do enjoy the slide, but it would not have any effect on how much fun a cruise is for anyone I wouldn't think and I doubt many choose a cruise based on a slide, with or wihtout kids or many kids will feel cheated because they thought there would be a slide.

    Thanks for your comment.

Just to be clear, I didn't choose the Norwegian Jewel for the waterslide but for the amazing itinery. The itinery worked for me and the slide was a bonus especially for those families traveling with young children,  no matter what the slide is like. From what I can tell, there aren't a lot of outdoor activities for the children.

In my opinion a ship without a slide or waterpark is gearing itself towards a different market.

You create a separate thread about this damn waterslide and how dissapointed you are at the fact they removed it, yet you have never even been on it.

News flash....it was an average waterslide that nobody will miss. You need to move on from it, there are more to NCL ships than this waterslide.

A seperate thread was created because it doesn't belong on this Norwegian Star thread, nor does it belong on a Roll Call thread.

    Thank you for your comment.

We were on the Transpacific - Vancouver to Tokyo - 2nd to last cruise prior to drydock.   On our final night it was quite warm - so a couple of us decided to do a quick circuit of the pools & hot tubs...   starting w/ the slide.   Glad we had a little fun b/4 they removed it 😜

Glad you had fun on it. Is the slide as bad as what some are saying on this thread?

I have been on those pathetic slides  - I got stuck!

My son said they were no good at all.

We sat and watched kids going down half way and then walking the rest of the way to water. And then they don’t use it anymore.

The slides are so old and weatherbeaten so how would they upgrade them? They just take up the precious deck space, doing nothing.

Maybe upgrade was the wrong choice of words, they should've replaced the old weatherbeaten slide (as you have described it) with a new water slide.

Is it the Jewel that you and your son have been on or a sister ship?

Really? It was a lame atttraction that needed to go. I can’t believe that someone would choose to go on the Jewel because it had that slide.

If it was the Bliss then I would say fair enough. But not the yellow peril on the Jewel class ships.

Besides, each of the Jewel class ships prior have had the slide removed. It was always going to happen in this instance.

I don't know how lame the slide was, as I haven't been on it.

I didn't choose the Jewel for the slide but for the itinery. The slide is for the children, there aren't a lot of outdoor activities for the children...mainly indoor only.

  8. NCL have removed the water slide from the Jewel during the recent 2018 dry dock refurb to make way for a more relaxing atmosphere by the pool. But what about the families that booked knowing their kids would enjoy the slide.

Have read posts on cruise critic about other NCL ships losing the slide during a refurb and some saying that the yellow slide wasn't the best and outdated.

If this was the case, why not upgrade the slide instead of taking it away! Or create a small water park.

As an adult I enjoy going on the slides. Have been on a cruise without a slide and it's just not as enjoyable for the young ones as well.

    Very disappointed!

Oh no! I'm so sorry to read this. My kids are going to be so disappointed. I saw a bunch of pictures with the slides and I never would have thought they were removed. 😞

They have also removed the slide during the NCL Jewel 2018 refurb. Very disappointed about this. If the yellow slide wasn't great NCL should've upgraded it!

  10. Thank you to all who replied to this thread.

I decided to go with World2Cover as it included $5000 car insurance excess as we were thinking of hiring a car at one of the ports in NZ. Almost the same policy as RACV travel insurance with a couple of differences ...same underwriter. It was also a part of my Entertainment Book membership so it came at a discount too.

  11. I have been reading the pds statements that come with most insurance policies and was surprised to notice that they don't cover you if you have had any alcohol in your system when an incident occurs. I don't drink a lot ...maybe 3 max per night...seems a bit rough if they don't cover you after a few drinks. I can understand not providing cover if you are completely intoxicated and incapacitated.

Anyone had experience in this area?

  12. OP's question about those obstructed windows ... pretty old but resurfaced, which is fine by itself ... but I am afraid it is based on outdated and possibly inaccurate info ... I've looked into the question a little bit further here; and, no offense to anyone, if mistaken, I stand corrected ...

The 3 partial screenshot images are - based on - 2015 post in the Cabin thread, which has subsequently been - apparently, updated due to changes done by the Jewel, to discontinue & remove those opaque windows. We're on the Gem last year & this year, I can confirm & vouch personally, it is NOT "smoked out" on the Gem's obstructed OV on deck 8, we actually stayed in one of them with clear double windows, plenty of natural skylight & freshly refreshed with carpeting, curtains & artwork, etc.

This is consistent with a newer post than those "citing" a direct reply from a hotel director from 2015 - by the January 2017 post, which referenced a direct reply by NCL -

The Jewel no longer has frosted windows. Cabin 8060 has a partially obstructed view because of the lifeboats.

My other suggestion, post this question on an upcoming Jewel Roll Call & see if someone is kind enough to check & confirm it in person while they are cruising & report back directly - if there is adequate time in the planning stage.

Both NCL agents and outside, independent agents have been proven "wrong" and given inaccurate info in the past, and the agents might be getting the not true info from NCL's call center, both using outdated info.

However, unless someone has first hand info - I would lean toward the 2017 update vs. 2015's reply ... ship has been thru dry docking & my recollection of those opaque window was that it wasn't popular - close those curtains at night and/or while sleeping, changing - privacy problems solved, IMO.

Thank you for your detailed response. I really hope what you have said is true about these opaque windows being removed. I'm mainly interested in the starboard cabins between 8070 to 8088. I will post again soon if I find out anything. I have posted this question on the current sailing of Jewel, but no replies just yet...they are probably having too much of a good time!

  13. I read in another thread that the obstructed ov cabins on the Jewel were frosted out and you couldn't see out at all. Can anyone who has sailed recently on any of the other jewel class obstructed ov cabins tell us if this is true on their ship. Or if your cruise is soon, please come back with this information. I am on the Gem and would be terribly upset if this was the case.

Hi all, I'm planning a trip on the Norwegian Jewel Would anyone please tell me if obstructed cabins 8070 to 8086 have a window that is opaque? Been reading some posts and someone posted this..see 3 attached images. Just wanting to know if its correct. Thank you.

  14. I booked my OCT cruise on Jan, before final payment date, I noticed $400 dropped, so I sent an email and recevied refund, but after final payment date, I also noticed $600 dropped again, so I asked to NCL, but no luck, no OBC, no REFUND, no upgrade offer, they just said to me "You wil be invited to UPGRADE BID"

The lesson what I learned is "NEVER BOOK CRUISE IN ADVANCE"

I booked H5 in JAN, and after final payment, I saw only 2 rooms were sold, including mine, so I will be the one who paid the most for H5 on my Cruise ship, haha.

I only bid for DOS, since min bid amount for OS or H4 was way too high, they are more expensive than direct up-sell, and I don't want to spend more money.

If you don't mind me asking, did you book interior, oceanview, obstructed view, balcony or upwards? Just wondering which rooms had price dropped for you. I'm about to put full payment down on obstructed view tomorrow. Thanks

  15. Possibly an OBC but more likely a cabin upgrade. Let us know how it works out for you. SeaShark is right, make sure it is a promo with different perks.

Didn't notice until right now, this is a thread that is almost a year old. Forget whatever I posted.

Thanks for your reply...I understand this thread is old but was interested if anyone had encountered any recent price drops.
