The following probably is clear to everyone by now:

10/07 - 10/13 New York to Bridgetown Barbados

10/14 - 10/25 Bridgetown Barbados to Montevideo Uruguay

10/25 - 10/29 Montevideo Uruguay to Punta Arenes

10/30 - 10/31 Punta Arenes to Puerto Williams

My question is what is she doing?

Theseus313...I'm not sure if you are sailing with us on the 31st but I would imagine she's getting routine maintenance and a good cleaning. I would guess provisions and crew are onloaded in Punta Arenas but I'm not sure. She should be nice ans spiffy for us, however.

Thank you alithecat, Tex1, labrasett - that's really interesting insight.

Having been forced to cancel this trip several times in the past few years we are very much 'on tenterhooks' with regard to this trip actually taking place unhindered. 😟. Fingers crossed !

Mmmm .. 'on tenterhooks' - is this a phrase that is only of meaning in certain nations ? 🤔

I had never heard the expression "on tenterhooks" but I do enjoy learning about different expressions and sayings. That's one of the great things about cruising...meeting people from around the world and learning about their homeland and customs.

We have started the final countdown and are looking forward to meeting you.

  3. So we set sail on October 31st on the Silver Endeavour to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Islands, and Antarctica. In researching landing rules and regulations for South Georgia it states that vessels with more than 200 passengers are restricted to a much shorter list of landing sites. It specifically states actual number of passengers and not passenger capacity.

So with the Endeavour's addition of cabins and new passenger capacity of 220 will they actually sail to Antarctica with 220 guests or will they limit it to 200? It may sound trivial but the number of landing sites is 6 for ships with more than 200 passengers versus 48 potential landing sites for ships carrying 200 or less passengers.

Fingers crossed for the answer I'm hoping for.🤞

Leaving today for Montreal to overnight at Fairmont QE, then on to a Charter flight to Ilaquit for an overnight then embarking on 8/10 (port changed to Ilaquit from Pond Inlet due to heavy Ice buildup around Pond Inlet. I will post some photos and details of the trip as we progress,

I will be hanging on every word of your review. We sail on the Endeavour at the end of October. Have a fabulous time!

Just a point that a plane to plane luggage transfer assumes you are connecting on the same airline or a partner airline.  If you happen to be connecting on a different airline without a partnership agreement you will have to pick up your luggage as if Copenhagen was your destination and re-check it with the second airline.  As such, I hope you are connecting on the same or a partner airline.  This also reduces the walking distance and number of checkpoints as planes from the same airline and alliance tend to be clustered together.

We are flying Delta and connecting to KLM. The trip was booked under one reservation with Delta so I'm feeling confident that our luggage will be checked through to our final destination of Copenhagen. KLM is a partner airline with Delta.

    Thank you for your concern/help.

Are you on the Dawn in October? I am flying from ATL to copenhagen also on oct 16th.  I was doing the same inquiry search as i like to be fully prepared.

We actually sail on August 15th.

It was so hard getting clarification on this. FlyerTalker put my mind at ease. I didn't like the thought of having to claim my bags and recheck them with only a 1 hour 20 minute layover.

I feel so much bettre now.

    Enjoy your trip!

You will go through inbound Schengen immigration in AMS and will clear customs with your luggage at CPH.  You will not have to do anything with your luggage at AMS.

At AMS, you will move from the "extra-Schengen" section of the airport to the "intra-Schengen" section - there will be passport control at that point.

OTOH, if you have a longer connection, I recommend visiting the airport branch of the national Rijksmuseum.  It's in the "extra-Schengen" section of the airport on Holland Boulevard.  Well worth the time.  Then go over to the "intra-Schengen" area.

A great big thank you for clarifying this for me. I'm so glad I don't have to claim our bags in Amsterdam.

I’ll be arriving 4 days before embarkation and returning 2 weeks after disembarkation London to Lisbon.  Have been told it is not a problem but of course there will be air deviation charges.

I know this post of yours is two years old but I'm trying to determine if SS will allow a deviation at the end of my cruise in Lisbon for 1 or 2 weeks. What was your experience in managing a deviation?

    Thank you!

  9. Jumping on this thread because I haven't had much response to my thread...

Since many of you are seasoned SS cruisers I thought I might ask here.

I am hoping to do a "deviation" at the end of my cruise (Lisbon). I am hoping to travel Europe for a couple of weeks and fly home from another major European airport, likely Milan or Rome.

Will SS allow a deviation like that? Flying home 2 weeks later and from another airport? If I book the flights myself SS is only offering a $350 credit pp. The cruise is listed as D2D only and I think the "non used air credit" is rediculous. The flights that are included in the D2D are Atlanta to Barbados and then return to Atlanta from Lisbon...certainly worth more than $350.

    Thanks for your help.

For which you will receive a 'non-used flight credit' .

You can do the same with 'private executive transfer' and receive a credit.

Unfortunately they are only giving us a $350 "Non-Used Air Credit" if we book it that way.

The flights that are included in the D2D are Atlanta to Barbados...and then Lisbon to Atlanta.

I am hoping I can get a "deviation flight" on the return flight so I can spend some time in Europe.

I am hoping someone reading this has had experience with booking "deviation flights" and could share how well it worked or what its limitations were.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Heather & Fred

I've just set up this cruise on the Roll Call section. Post on there and we can meet a little more.

I just checked the roll call page and it's not listed...yet. I'll keep checking.

Really looking to chatting with you.

Firstly thank you so much to everyone who has shared their experiences of 'Polar Parka's'. The big draw I have from these regarding what to wear under the 'puffa lined' Parka is - 'it depends' !!

As several have said the secret is to pack items that are multi purpose - and are suitable for layering.

Yes labrasett - we are renting the boots from Silversea (at a high cost IMHO). We have also decided to take Crocs with us for the walks between Cabin & Mud Room (or maybe Muck Boots) - anyone have any views on this please ?

The point you make about being on a zodiac for several hours v walking on land is a very good one. Several points on our itinerary are wholly zodiac based (e.g. Elephant Island) as where walking around Port Stanley is a different situation completely.

You are clearly a master at 'multi purpose garments' and have given me food for thought as to what to bring/pack. I remember some years ago in the Arctic on Silver Explorer that a combination of packing restrictions, size of cabins, and timings for evening briefings resulted at times in little discernible difference between day time 'expedition clothing' and dinner wear. This was particularly the case in Svalbard where many were on standby to drop their knives and forks and rush out on deck if they see a Polar Bear.

We are very fortunate in being in a Silver Suite, plus we are well over the 100 days mark, so it is fair to say that on this cruise we will be utilising the 'free' laundry in a very programmed way 😉

Yes bitob - I remember on an exploration cruise in the Arctic - we purchased all the gear we thought was needed - much of which is still sitting at the back of our wardrobe today - little used ! On this particular cruise the temperature at times was not much colder than in a UK early winter !

number one eagles fan - I think you could be correct. Silver Endeavour, departing Puerto Williams on 31st October ?  If yes then maybe we need to set up a roll call ?

Yes RachelG  - it's all very unpredictable - and sometimes counter intuitive  - just a T shirt under the Parka in Antarctica - who'd have thought it ???

My memory may not be delivering accurate recollections but I think we may have been on the same cruise in June 2012. Silver Explorer ... Reykjavik to Longyearbyen ?

Mrs M and I packed all the gear that was recommended for that cruise and didn't wear half of it - and that was with the Mk.1 Parka ie without the Puffa liner !

Fred and I look forward to sailing with you. I believe it will be an adventure of a lifetime.

Mrs Machotspur & I are getting serious about our preparations for our long awaited Falklands/S.Georgia/Antarctica expedition cruise in October 23.

We have a quite basic question that I’d really value some insight from previous Antarctica/Arctic explorers please.

We note that the Parka that is now provided by Silversea includes an inner Puffa jacket.

Does this mean that we don’t need to worry about bringing an insulation layer (e.g. fleece or puffa) and only need to combine the Silversea provided Parka/Puffa with a thin base layer ?  The lowest temperature is likely to be around minus 6.

As some will know the baggage weight limit on the Santiago – Puerto Williams charter flight is only 23kg so we need to be careful with what we pack !

Thank you so much for any info you can give me.

We are sailing on October 31st. Might you be on the same cruise?

  15. 24 hours in Copenhagen.

So my sister and I will have only 24 hours in Copenhagen prior to our cruise. What would be the best area/hotel to stay to be in good proximity to some of the city's highlights? We are not kids so extensive walking is not an option but it would be nice to have one or two options for visiting from our hotel.

    Thanks!

Oh my! that will be a big issue for DW.  She doesn't like the cold (hence will live in Belize most of the year)

guess the dress code will be a parka at the grill and la terazza!

I really hope they fix this. It would be a shame if they were not working and it limited our enjoyment out on the decks.
