  1. This is more of a curious question than a serious concern, but I do wonder. I know someone who's healthy normal temperature is lower than 98.6 so a temperature of 100.0 means they're really ill so I wonder if there are also people for whom a temperature of 100.6 doesn't mean they're ill? What about if you are in menopause and having a hot flash? Does it make the scan read you as hot and if so is it hot enough to make you seem like you have a fever? Are there other conditions that could make you read to hot while being perfectly healthy?

  2. I have a friend who was posting on facebook during the boarding process for a cruise out of Miami last weekend. Paraphrasing his many posts, they were having everyone have the temperature scan and it is gumming up the works. Thanks to it gumming up the works the boarding process took longer than usual. He does 4-5 cruises a year out of Miami so I guess he'd know. I think he was most perturbed they stopped the line for about 10 minutes waiting for the line for temperature scans to go down just as he was getting in line outside and again for about 20 minutes after he was in the building.

On his cruise they were scanning every passenger. Some are posting they received emails saying only those with Chinese passports, who have been in China in the last 15 days, or who look ill will be temperature scanned. I've also seen two different emails posted up on social media, one saying if your temperature is over 104.3 you won't be allowed to board and will not receive a refund, and one saying if it is over 104.3 you'll be additionally scanned and may not be allowed to board with no refund given.

Are you keeping in touch?  We have friends on board who usually do not purchase internet, and I wondered if perhaps the ship was supplying free internet to those on board now?

We are all hoping the best for all the passengers and crew.

As of 7:45 today family aboard has emailed us to tell us they are fine. They said after those with internet access encouraged friends and family to post the phone number for HAL on social media for those with friends and family to call asking for updates since free internet has not been granted passengers like every other problem ship Westerdam's captain gave them free internet for a few hours to contact friends and family to let them know they were ok. Still seeing posts online asking folks to keep calling tomorrow asking why they're not being given free internet for the rest of the cruise.

  4. I will be on Spirit in December. I got an email today about the dry dock renovations. At the bottom it says they're expanding the spa, adding dining options, and they will be eliminating the space for Guppies, Splash Academy, and Entourage to make way for these. It says they don't expect many children as they plan to take it to more exotic destinations after the renovation. I don't cruise with kids so no problem for me. but it seemed like others might need to know.

  5. This question isn't about ports so I hope this is the right place. We are about to embark on our first river cruise in March which is a lower Mississippi cruise on American Duchess.

Will my husband need a suit or can he get by in the dining room for dinner with nice slacks, a dress shirt, and maybe a tie?

Will we need to wear our dinner dress for evening activities?

Are the cabins metal like on an Ocean cruise? We normally take some strong magnetic hooks we use for organization on ocean cruises.

I feel like there are questions we don't even know to ask about the differences between river cruising and ocean cruising. I just found out there is no buffet or alternative to the MDR for dinners on board the ship. Is there any item we'd never think of for an ocean cruise that is a must for river cruising?

  6. You can buy yearly travel insurance that covers you whenever you travel during that period. I found one that suits me via a link provided frequently around CC for a website that lists many different companies and information on all the different policies they offer. I'm sorry to say I no longer have the link but hopefully someone will come along after me with it. As far as cost goes I have to admit I don't know the exact number. I still work and travel often for the company so they pay for my policy. The amount is probably less than you'd think, though. I want to say it was about equal the price of individual trip insurance for 2 or 3 trips. I usually make that many trips per month so well worth the cost for me and my company.
