Great to hear!  When we see you on the upcoming Panama Canal trip in December, we'll have to pick your brain further, as we are going Jan 2024.

We don’t leave on our Panama Canal cruise until January. Hope you enjoy your cruises!

We did this cruise last January and loved it. No problem that we didn’t stop in Hawaii since we had already been there.  You have to love sea days, which we do.  Very relaxing and Viking had lots of lectures and other activities to participate in.  The lecturers were some of the best! Overall, great cruise and would go again with Viking for sure.

    TOTALLY agree!

We were on this cruise to French Polynesia in January of 22.
No Mexico or Hawaii, it was 33 marvelous days with incredible excursions and lectures!

Our favorites excursions were the Waverunner trip around Moorea and a 4x4 trip to see beautiful waterfalls in the mountains of Tahiti!

We plan on doing this again in the future.

I believe there’s a river cruise forum here on CruiseCritic. Maybe ask there?

I figured that would be for Viking River cruises… We are interested in one of their Ocean cruises. I did try to do a search and check the roll calls before posting this request for information, because I didn’t get the results that I was looking for.

The Viking Amazon River Cruise we did was round trip from San Juan a few years ago..  We enjoyed the cruise BUT it lacked the real WOW that we were expecting from the Amazon.  Perhaps the itinerary is different now.  We had previously done a small boat River Cruise on the Peruvian Amazon and it was amazing!!!  Lots of wild life and fauna!   I think to appreciate the area you need a small ship experience.   I am sorry I did not explore the options before we went.

May I ask what month you went with Viking?

We've done quite a few Viator excursions; my son and I went to the Normandy coast for a full-day tour; my wife and I have been to Giverny and Versailles; we did a 2nd trip to Giverny; my son and I also did a full-day tour to Stonehenge and Glastonbury.

All of these were excellent; not only were the pickups on time, but everything was as expected, if not better. I know it's luck of the draw, but I wouldn't hesitate to book another excursion with Viator.

We just got back from Barcelona. We used Viator for a 4 hour Skip the Line tour of Park Güell and La Sagrada Familia. We took a cab for $15 from our hotel to the meeting spot. It was an excellent tour!  We had about 12 people in our group. I would definitely use them again!

However, I booked a 48 hour hop on hop off bus with them and when we didn’t use it on the first day it was listed as completed when we went to use it the next day. Also, next time we will just wait and see which bus has a stop closest to our location when we arrive at our location.

We’ve always interpreted this to mean the restaurants (excluding World Buffet) and theater. Not the lounges.

That said, for our cruise last month, I only brought black slacks, no jeans. It was just easier and allowed me to not even think about the question. So arriving late after an excursion was no big deal because we weren’t wearing jeans anyway.

Exactly how we interpreted it, too. We have also stopped packing blue jeans.

What's wrong with jeans?  My jeans are more expensive than the khakis I have.  😝

Anyhow.  Actually in office today.  One great thing about the pandemic - nobody cares about what I wear at work anymore!

I totally agree with you on jeans. Some outfits with jeans look classier than some dresses I have seen, but I try to respect what Viking states as their dress code.

If you have dinner in the World Cafe following an excursion and are dressed casually, perhaps in Jeans, should you change into dressier attire before going to the Star theater,Explorer lounge etc?

    As per Viking:

    What is the dress code?

During the day, dress is casual including shorts (if the season is warm), slacks or jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. Swimsuits, brief shorts, cover-ups and exercise attire should be reserved for the Fitness Center, pool areas and Sports Deck. There are no “formal nights” in the evening; evening dress is “elegant casual” for all dining venues, performances and special events. On these occasions, required attire for ladies includes a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse; for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional; jeans are not permitted. The evening dress excludes World Café where the dress remains casual after 6:00 PM.

Some shore excursions visit religious sites that require modesty of dress. To avoid being denied entry, we recommend men wear long pants and refrain from sleeveless shirts; and for women, clothing that covers the knees and tops that are not sleeveless or too revealing.

We’re currently on Viking Venus. PV category and I logged in the first day reservations were open. We were able to book the optional tours we wanted. Spa appointments were scarce. There were no bookings available for either of the specialty restaurants-guaranteed 2 in each. Contacted Viking and got one for first day.
When we got to the ship wanted to add the others. They would not book us a second chef’s table and insisted we cancel the one we had to get preferred menu. Only could get one at Manfredis and that is for a sharing table. There is availability some nights at 8:30 or 9:00.
This is the first time there has been a problem getting reservations onboard.

Hopefully you can get the 2 in each restaurant that is part of the perks with paying more for the PV. It is a considerable amount more that you pay. Please update this is you do. Good luck!

Definitely chair hogs on the Star this week! Books and personal items on the chairs by 7 AM on sea days. With only 24 loungers available at the infinity pool, they go fast.

    So sad and disappointing

Recent bad experience with Viator means I would have  a search of excursion reviews from the port boards .

We are trying Viator for the first time in Barcelona on the 14th of November, because of not being able to get the excursions we wanted with Viking. What was your bad experience? We searched multiple Viking sites and Viator was one of the recommended tour companies.

For me this is a new phenomena on Viking. Our last cruise Aug-Sept had all the outfacing chairs with stuff on them as we went to breakfast on sea days.

Similar reserved seating bad behavior upstairs in Explorer lounge. Loud large groups taking reserving all chairs, no not Steve's folks from MyFace. 🙂
Never noticed on 3 pre-Covid cruises. Guest behavior has changed.

We ran into this on the Orion in January. It seemed like some of the people in the suites on that level treated the upper level of the Explorers Lounge as their own special area…

They were so loud that you could hear them on the lower level…

We are doing the Northern Lights cruise March 20. Since we booked the lowest cabin category, we cant book until Jan 19. Anyone done this trip that can tell if we might have a problem getting some evening search for the Northern lights tours? My wifecwants one of these, not me.

We are on the cruise just before you. We booked PV, not because of the cabin, but to have a better chance at getting the excursions we wanted.
Fingers crossed that she gets what she wants.

By the way, I was looking online for more information & Viking is not the only cruise line that just announced new rules for testing, at least for Australia.

I think the rules have more to do with what countries the cruise stops in and even the order of the ports, than the cruise-line.
For example if you go to Panama before Honduras you need a yellow fever vaccination to get off the ship there, but not if you go first to Honduras, then Panama.

Why?  No longer need to be vaccinated to cruise but spit test every morning?  Makes no sense.  We are booked out of San Juan for Christmas but will probably cancel if they intend to do this silly test for Christmas.

I checked and it looks like it is mainly in the Southern Hemisphere.

Agreed -- and Viking sure took care of us!  Last December, we cruise with Viking out of Los Angeles. We booked our own flights and used Viking transfers only on the departure end. What we booked and what we actually flew were two completely different things; our lunch-time departure turned into a red-eye flight when a few weeks before our flight our mid-day flight was cancelled. But we still had the transfer and were prepared for an all-day wait at the airport.

Well imagine our surprise when Viking tells us that they are taking us to a hotel where they had arranged a room for us as part of the transfer -- on them!  We hadn't even booked our air through them and all we were expecting was a ride to the airport.

    WOW! Incredible!
