Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. Clay, Mike & I visited Chobe National Park during our May 2023 Africa Safari trip. We were in Chobe specifically on May 5 & 6. We had tons of wildlife viewing: lions, giraffes, elephants, Cape buffalo, impala, kudu, hippos, lots of birds. I think April would also be good, it’s far enough at the end/past rainy season. I think it will depend greatly on who they get to do the safari. The guides all work together via radio. Karla
  2. It was a paid excursion, listed at 10 hours (we went over about 30 minutes) and covering 150 miles to drive The Great Ocean Road. It cost $229. We received a box lunch with numerous sandwiches/wraps, fruit cup, and dessert while in Apollo Bay. Some people opted to eat in one of the numerous restaurants instead. We had about 7 stops (including the Twelve, lunch and 2 comfort stops).
  3. World Cruise, Port: Geelong (Melbourne), Australia Twelve Apostles, Koalas, and Cockatoos We went on “The Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles” Viking excursion from Geelong (Melbourne), Australia today. Highlight for me was seeing 3 Koalas in the wild. Luckily our bus driver was able to pull over. Enjoy. Feel free to save/share
  4. Seal Watching from Tongue Point excursion from Wellington today. The stars were the fur seals.
  5. While I watched whales in Honolulu, Mike went on the “Diamond Head Hike” excursion. He really enjoyed it. It climbs 560 feet in 0.8 miles on its way to the top of the crater. Here are some of his pictures.
  6. From Kauai’s “Waimea Grand Canyon” excursion. The canyon, the lighthouse as we entered port Nawiliwili, and at the “Spouting Horn”.
  7. As we were leaving Honolulu, I took these pics of the Humpback whale(s) that was breaching on the starboard side of the ship.
  8. From Honolulu I took the “Waikiki Whale Watching Tour”. It was great. We saw spinner dolphins, at least 6 pods of whales and sea turtles. We also had great views of the island. Here are some pics.
  9. For those interested in wildlife: sea lions spotted from the tender and acorn woodpecker spotted on a tree outside the Santa Barbara Mission.
  10. Today’s wildlife included dolphins off starboard as we cruised past Acapulco, Mexico just after lunch. I believe they are Pantropical Spotted Dolphins.
  11. I believe this is a crocodile, as does our biologist on board. This photo was taken while we were traveling through Gatun Lake on our Panama Canal transit. First one is to show the area where I spotted it, second one is enlarged to show the crocodile.
  12. Thank you. Sony a7R V with a 70-200 f.2.8 lens and a 1.4 teleconverter. Wanted to bring my 200-600mm, but it’s just too big with everything else I wanted/needed to bring plus I usually use it with a tripod (harder to hand shoot).
  13. For those seeing the birds off the port side this morning, they were Atlantic Brown Boobies. There was also one Magnificent Frigate Bird for a short time. We will see many more Frigate birds as we get closer to the Panama Canal. These are seabirds and live at sea all year round except for nesting, when they go to a site (usually an island) that they use each year.
